In Roatan the ports were ports were built by the cruise companies. This port in Banana Coast is a private invester. Outside of the port the town of Trujillo.

I have been considering booking the Jewel out of Houston in November as well but was concerned about this new port. I was really hoping to go to Roatan. It seems that the Banana Coast port was developed (aka man made). Sure, there is a town (Trujillo) nearby but my understanding is that everything around the port is owned and managed by one company. At least that it what it seems like from reading the press releases. I don't have any experience with man made ports or private islands, but it seems to me that you wouldn't get to experience much of the local culture there. My guess is NCL and other cruise lines are moving here because there is a much higher profit margin off excursions that they can control.

 

Has anyone ever been on the Emerald Princess? I see it is sailing out of Houston also but the videos I have seen on YouTube make the cabins seem very dated. I think I'd rather risk it with a new man made port than go on a ship that I find unattractive.

@ LAWTONCRUISE I agree with you 100%. When I go to new ports I like to do the same and the Historical Tram is just fine with me and my family.

Are any of these local independent tour operators insured and certified? Or are they just mom and pop businesses trying to get a piece of the pie. The guides and equipment that they will use for these tours are they safe? I would love for you to tell me more Caribbean George.

I'm on the Jewel cruising to this new port. I'm thinking I'm gonna be booking my tours from the ship. I worry about the independent tour operators over there. I wonder if they are safe? Anybody got suggestions?

Its a great little beach town. Go to this website http://www.bananacoasttours.net/ or their facebook page which is called Banana Coast Tours. Seems like they got it going on.

The port has been completed since 2012. there seems to be 2 different websites for Banana Coast and Banana Coast Tours http://www.bananacoasttours.net/ It seems that Norwegian is not the only cruise line that's going....Holland America, Silver Seas, P&O and Oceania are also going to this port. Seems like a nice quiet beach town. I for one am looking forward to checking it out on my cruise. Getting tired of Roatan!
