While it doesn't help OP given their 3 day pre-cruise stay, for folks coming in just a day or two beforehand remember that you can use a test taken at home within the last 2 days/72 hours depending on type... so if there's still a free clinic near you with PCR testing you have a full 72 hr validity before boarding a ship up here, and since we no longer need tests to fly into Canada you don't even have to struggle to find a Rapid PCR test rather than the day or two 'send samples off to a lab' versions.

All-in-all though, bringing some cheap tests from home and bookmarking at least a couple of online proctoring services is going to be your cheapest and most convenient way if your timing requires a test here in Vancouver.

Hi, Not sure I understand - if we bring the tests from home - we have to find someone to watch  us do them? Or when you say proctoring - have that as a back up in case the tests you bring don't work? I've never done it on my own - just use CVS in the states before trips so far.

Do the research but if you want to get by "cheap"

Juneau - $45 bus ride per person to Mendenhall (see the glacier and walk the trails), walk around the town (bar there supposedly has Wyatt Earps Gun), do the tram up to the mountain (not positive on pricing as we hiked to the top and just rode it down)

Ketchikan - shops, self guided tour around town (walking), others can comment on the Lumberjack Show or Crabfeast (if they are worth it and how good it is)

There are tons of options though and you need to research if it might be worth the splurge to do/see something. For us we know we will go back to Alaska so doing everything is not required but with my parents going this summer we are splurging a little more since it will be a 1 and done for them likely.

We want to hike up and ride down on the tram too - how long did it take you to hike? What did you think? And do they still let you buy something for 10.00 to ride down free?

Yes they are running.  I live here.

Besides walking in to town is there anything close to the ship to see/do. We are doing excursions at every other port and wanted just a relaxed day here.

So here we are in October and you still need the PCR test.  The same folks who thought things would change last year still sit at home wondering when things will change.  Others, like us, just comply with the rules and travel/cruise.  We are in Barbados where the nurse that did our mandatory swab told us she now thinks this is the new normal… and we agree.

    Hank

Hi Hank. We just booked a cruise on RCL for Jan. 30th and have been reading all the rules. So you got a PCR before you left home - within 72 hours of flight - took vaccine card and negative test to airport. Had another PCR at the airport and then HAD to go to a hotel for 2 nights before the cruise so they could email you results that you took to the ship? Did your ship also do a test on you at boarding because that's what Royal is saying they do. That's a lot of tests!

We went starting the first week in September in Fairbanks.  Stayed there a few days before boarding the train.  There we saw wildlife, some coming down from high country.  We stayed only two days in Denali but there was a lot to see, altho the mountain hid from us.  From thereon the moose were in rhut, and saw moose all over, even in the city streets.  Fascinating.  Then on to Anchorage, boarding the ship in Seward, with a restful trip sailing home.  The weather was good except for one day while aboard the train with some rain.   You will love this land/sea combination -- a great vacation trip.☺️

    Marianne

Marianne, what did you do in Fairbanks? We end our land tour there about 8:30 one night and fly out the next night. Would like to do something for the day IN Fairbanks - not get a rental car and drive.

Easy walk.  The bus leaves the Capital transport station near the top of each hour (grab a schedule from the visitor kiosk near the tram station.  There are two loops that take you to the Mendenhall drop off station and as noted the walk is an easy mile and a  half on flat terrain and well paved.  No restrooms until you get to the park and the bus takes about 50 minutes. The driver will announce your stop (follow the crowd).  Have exact change ($2 per person) and drop in the box by the driver.  Can be a bit crowded as a lot of locals use the bus to get around (also stops at the hospital and shopping center).  Returns are on the :30 past each hour (again you can catch going in either direction going back to the central station).  Be sure to check schedule if traveling on a holiday.

If you take the public bus do you pay to get into the park?

  7. We walked. Easy and only took about 30 minutes (or would have except we stopped to take some pictures).

Just ask directions leaving the port to get to the port gate - they even had a woman standing out there to direct folks. Most of the walk is along the river and pretty much dumps you on O'Connell St. No problem!

  8. That looks like something all of my grandchildren would enjoy. Does it have to be done there? Or can I purchase them with instructions and take them home with me?

We did this at St Martin's on the Field in London. Great experience and I brought mine home to frame. I don't think you could DO it at home though because you rub it against something they have in the shop.

  9. Here's the brochure. They have staff standing there with credit card machines outside the buses. JUst make you are at the square by 3:30pm to not catch last bus.

That was fast!!! When I click on this is gives me the dreaded 404 message! LOL! But you answered the credit card question - and good to know to be back by 3:30 - is the fare in fact 6 pounds round trip - or is that one way?

  10. I was on Brilliance when it was last here and the tender seemed to go well with the local tourist boats being used as well. The shuttle goes continuously and there's been plenty of buses. The journey to the city centre depends on time of day (i.e. takes a bit longer in rush hour) but roughly 30-35 minutes

For some reason I can't pull up the shuttle website - my computer says "not a secure site" - I just wanted to know - is the price 6 pounds ROUND TRIP? And do they take credit cards? If so where/who do you pay?

  11. We were off ship within 30 minutes. Easy process. They hire large sightseeing boats and at least 3 or 4 buses waiting. Super easy. Btw tomorrow well see how tender in Guernsey. Are you on cruise critic roll call for your sailing? Ill try to join when I get home Wednesday and answer port and ship questions. I only have Wi-Fi today. But you can email me questions to answer next week at stevenramm at aol dot com.

Best rec for Wales is with busy bus tours. Better than rci's. Book now on line and request small bus. Mention Steve from last brilliance. They now know me. Sorry if some of this is off topic 😁

Thanks, Steve. Yes, I'm on roll call for the July 25th sailing. I'm traveling with 22 friends - we are booked on Busy bus in Wales - Invergordon Bus Tours there - and Butlers in Cork - each tour just our group. The rest of the places we're just exploring. There are so many things I've written down for Edinburgh including a free 2 hour walking tour - I was concerned about how long it takes getting back and forth which would even more shorten that day. Thanks for the info!! I've kept your email!

  12. We're still in the brilliance - free WiFi day - and just want tip say that the shuttle was fabulous. We bought the return for 6 # and shared a cab up to castle with another couple. 6# total. Saw castle-had explorer pass - and walked down mile to see parliament (must see open every day) and 4pm bus back to ship. Thank you tartan exile and lotharian!

We'll be on the Brilliance July 27th. How was the tender process at that port? And how long to get on the shuttle and then how long to get downtown? Any other tips?

  13. As for Cork... Ships dock at Cobh (pronounced "Cove"), a separate town altogether, some miles from Cork. Take the train into Cork from Cobh--the Cobh railway station is right next to the dock. Cobh is a lovely town itself, well situated along and above Cobh harbor; it is well worth exploring (see St Colman's cathedral). Known as Queenstown from 1849 to 1920, it was a major point of departure for Irish emigrants to the United States, and was the last stop of RMS Titantic.

You can walk from the Dublin docks to the city centre... I know, cos I've done it... But I wouldn't do it again. ;)

How long did it take you? Was it easy to know which way to go?

  14. Buses aren't a viable option any more from SQ. Train involves a walk up a steep hill at SQ and again in Edinburgh and not suitable for anybody with mobility issues. Yes there is a hill up from Princes Street to the Castle but my friend who has breathing difficulties can manage it in easy stages. This is a thread I created previously which may help

What happened to the buses? I've been taking notes from the forums about the trains and buses and did notice they were a couple years old - so I should throw away all my bus notes? And just plan on the train?
