  1. P&O UK were here at the time and they were doing world cruises on the Canberra and around the same years the Sea Princess was doing world cruises as well. The Sea Princess then changed its name to Victoria and I believe is currently operating somewhere as the Mona Lisa if it has not been retired already. After Canberra left the P&O fleet what you know today as the Pacific Pearl came here for world cruises as the Arcadia along with the new Oriana.

Cunard was also doing round world cruises with QEII coming each year and sometimes a ship called Caronia.

Also I believe in the 1990's the HAL ships were doing visits here on around the world cruises.

I still have brochures from relatives were doing those cruises in the 1990's and I would often visit circular quay when they departed.

The expansion of Princess into the country was not unexpected given the ties it already had.

The arrival of Royal Caribbean first started to shake things up with Carnival taking the country more seriously and deploying more ships here in response.

It is also a trend that the two major cruise lines try to compete with each other in all regions of the world the know the competition to sail.

Given the coverage Carnival corp already has in this country with all the cruise lines visiting I am really surprised that Costa would join that list as well when in my opinion they could have been better deployed elsewhere where they have a greater following of passengers.

Personally I would not sail on Costa if I was offered money to do so.

I think costa cruises would be very happy to show you what cruising is all about especially the worldy,I had a magnificent 100 days with them and would not talk at all bad about them, and I have done the Oriana and QE2 sector sailings and would compare them in a lower level than Costa as for itinerary and most of all the food.On the world cruise there was mainly German cruisers followed by Italians and French my wife and I were the only Australians aboard but we both speak and understand the Italian language. The only gripe I have with Costa and MSC is that you pay for the water.

    Cheers.

  3. The Costa Deliziosa is a mix of the best of the VISTA class and

SPIRIT class into one, and I did the world cruise on the Costa Deliziosa last year and the experience was fantastic, food was to my liking and activities were very low key.We had a oceanview cabin and I did not experience any untoward noises or creaks on it except when we encountered some rough seas after San Francisco, it did moan and groan a bit then as barry said.

    Regards Frank.

  4. Excellent. Looking forward to reading all about it.

    Nice capture.

Wandered down and had a look and saw my travel agent and asked if he had any authority to get me on with a pass or something, unfortunately he and his boss were the only ones going on board together with other travel agents. He said he could get me on at a very good price, but I declined his offer as I have a big cruise next year.

  5. Hi Pushka

I'm old enough to remember 20,000 ton liners , we thought Oriana(1) and Canberra were huge ship at 40,000 tons

I would rather sail on a well designed smaller ship than a large flat bottomed barge with a block of flats grafted to the top

Oronsay, Orsova and even Himalaya come to mind, and we had them all in Australia as new ships ... and like Frank I spent a lot of time investigating them , remember the days when you could buy a visitors pass when the ships were in port ?? now I'm showing my age again :p

    Regards

    John

I loved those ships immensely, so much so that my wife and I are doing the Prinsendam, A mid sized 40,000 tonner approximately, around South America,Antartic and back to Ft Lauderdale in January 2015 and on arrival, on to Rome on the same ship for another 55 days. This will be pure Bliss for both of us.

    Regards Frank.

  6. Hi Frank yes well done ..on those four

Remember also Southern Cross and Northern Star very new and different to what we had seen before

    Regards

    John

I sure do, I live very close to the fremantle port and use to board all the ships and have a walk around them. They were the days John.

Went as close as possible to see the QM2 today she is a real gem of a ship and one day will do her.

    Regards Frank.

  7. Well said that Girl ....

P&O are experts at doing just that , and the other lines are learning from their fine example.

But we do have Solstice at five years old .. but she is not here for Australians in the main she is here so Americans can visit and not have to lower their standards too much :D

    Regards

    john

It was not always like this , when migration to Australia by sea was at it peak we were fortunate to see many brand new ships in our part of the world ..I wonder who can name just a few of them ??

    Hint O 1 and C and G M and G G come to mind

I travelled on three of them the ; Canberra, Guglielmo Marconi, Galileo Galilei and the one I did't go on the first Oriana

    Regards Frank.

  8. There is this link over on the MSC Board.

    http://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cr...orchestra.html

not much more in it other than the heading.

Well it will be good that there will be 2 ships to choose from within a moderate price range in the Suez Canal but I am still more partial to RCCL. I have been on MSC but if the price and ports are more to my liking, I guess I will be tempted to go with MSC again.

This is from MSC:MSC Lirica to be Lengthened, MSC Set for Asia/Australia with Orchestra

    on 26 November 2013.

MSC Lirica will be stretched.MSC Cruises has announced that the MSC Lirica will be lengthened to the tune of 200 staterooms.

At a press conference in Brazil celebrating the arrival of the MSC Preziosa to the market, MSC confirmed they will add 200 rooms to the Lirica, which was the first newbuild to enter service for MSC when it launched in 2003.

The refurbishment will be completed before the 2014/2015 South America season, which will feature the Preziosa, Poesia, Magnifica and Lirica.

Furthermore, the line said the MSC Orchestra was set to sail in the Red Sea from Dubai, and then head to Asia and Australia in early 2015.

    Regards

    Frank.

  9. Rhapsody is doing Sydney to Istanbul in 2015 according to an email I received from one of the major travel agents and will probably stay in the med for a while.

Regards Frank. ( 2015 Passage to Istanbul Rhapsody) 47 nights.

Ship info - Rhapsody of the Seas

  10. Hi David

This world cruise is the second that Costa Deliziosa is doing(2013) whereby its first one will be next year.

The beauty of it is, the four days in Los Angeles and multiple days in some other ports.

There are 15 shore excursions included as a bonus in the price and I think the all inclusive drinks is on the 2012 world cruise.

    Regards Frank.
