  1. How old are the kids? In the National Museum of Bermuda (where I'm guessing you are having your dolphin encounter) there's a small but unique playground that my 4yo daughter loved and is looking forward to returning this fall as a 7yo. The fort part of the museum was also very interesting for kids. And there's sheep on the grounds! Doesn't answer your food question, but definitely something fun to do in the dockyard.

  2. Where are you docking? If you think the adults in your party would be interested, I recommend the National Museum of Bermuda at the Dockyard as a good family option.  Kids under 16 are free, so it's fairly economical. There is a fun play area for the kids with a wooden eel to climb around in, a VERY large slide (might be too big for the 2yo), and a sandbox. There's also a small room of kids museum type stuff. Just make yourself scarce when the kids start ringing the bell - it's loud!! We just visited in October with our 4yo daughter, and one parent stayed with her in the kids area while the other visited some of the exhibits, then we traded off. She was happy playing there for 45 minutes or so and then we all walked around the grounds and looked at the sheep.

I also second Charles's Horseshoe Bay recommendation if you think it is warm enough, and what he said about the minimal need for carseats. We are typically sticklers for carseats and seatbelts, but the narrow roads don't allow for very high speeds and in this case they might be more hassle than they are worth.

Flanagan's Irish Pub on Front St. lists spiny lobster on their menu as being available when in season. Although it's in season now I'm not sure whether they will actually have it available on the day you're there. They have an outdoor dining patio overlooking Hamilton Harbour...of course no guarantee seating will be available there when you arrive. They do have a kid's menu.

Oh, I really like the look of Flanagan's. If they don't have lobster available there are lots of other tempting options and my daughter will be all over mozzarella sticks as an entree. Thanks so much!!

  4. Hmm, or in thinking it over more, I had planned Lobster Pot for lunch and Frog and Onion for dinner, but I could switch seafood/pub food and do Hog Penny for lunch in Hamilton and then Woody's for dinner as we'll be coming back from Somerset.

Any reviews of Hog Penny or Woody's? Food quality, kid friendliness, local fare options? Or I'd still love to hear recommendations for lobster in Hamilton.

  5. We are going to be in Bermuda on Saturday and I had been planning to go to lunch at the Lobster Pot, but just realized that they only serve dinner on the weekends. (Side note: next trip to Bermuda will definitely be during the week - I'm looking at you, Dockyard/St. George ferry!)

Any recommendations for a laid back place to get good spiny lobster for lunch in Hamilton? We have a 4yo with us, so outside seating is a plus (picnic tables would be fine) and french fries are a must 😉

  6. Yes, sorry Charles, definitely didn't mean anything bad against Go-Float. I'm very pleased with how responsive they've been during the booking process and with the quick notice of cancellation. We were very excited about the tour so I was hoping to get more information. That makes sense about parts/service potentially being difficult to obtain.

  7. We are cruising to Bermuda in October and had scheduled a Go-Float tour with CurrentSea in Daniels Head. I got a call this week that the tour was being cancelled for "mechanical difficulties".  This seems strange as we are still a month out from our cruise. Has anyone else had this happen? Do you think they might be up and running by October? Anyone done the Go-Float tour? We were originally thinking jetskis, but we've got a four year old and felt like one person could drive and one person could keep her from jumping into the ocean on the Go-Float, haha.

  8. I'll chime in with another recommendation for the Saturday-Sunday market. We spent a few hours browsing the shops and bought many things that I can't wait til Christmas to gift to our family and friends. Also, all the food options were unique and tasty. The corn fritters from the fish and chips shop at the southern end of the food strip were delicious!

If you are into biking, I'd also highly recommend taking a spin on the Tony Knowles Costal Trail. We rented our bikes from Lifetime Adventures in the courtyard of the Copper Whale Inn. They are right on 5th and L, one block from the trail. We did the two hour rental for $10 per person (from their website, their posted prices are higher, so be prepared to insist on the website price - I've copied the link below). That gave us enough time to get to the airport and back with just a few stops for pictures. We would have liked to get further because we heard that you might see moose on the trail past the airport, but dinnertime was approaching.

  9. Hmmm, thanks all. Good food for thought. I guess we'll play it by ear and see what the weather is like. We don't have anything scheduled for Juneau but we are hoping for a while out at Mendenhall and maybe some kayaking. AmberCascades, given your experience I think it would be wise to budget quite a bit more than the 1 1/2 hours from the dock! I have also hiked Diamond Head and aside from the heat (which I don't think will be a problem on Mount Roberts ;)) found it to be a very enjoyable hike.

fishin' musician, our excursions don't end until around 6pm in Skagway. I guess we'll see how long these Alaskan summer days really are and if we think we have enough light left to do a hike afterwards. Those both look like great options.

  10. Yikes! Getting out into the woods is a priority for us while we are there. I figured that this was a chance to save some money at the same time. I guess we'll stick to the more beaten path trails at Mendenhall and once we get up the tram.

Thanks so much for the info! And good point about the cell phone. I might not have remembered simple precautions like that in all the excitement of being in Alaska :)

  11. Hi! I see lots of great reviews about hiking once you get to the top of Mount Roberts. I've also seen how you can take the tram down the mountain for free with a gift shop/food purchase.

Has anyone taken advantage of this cost saving measure? How long did it take? What was the trail like?

My husband and I are both around 30 and fairly active, but we aren't expert hikers.
