  1. We sailed on the Koningsdam a year ago just after it was launched on a back to back Rome-Eastern Mediterranean, Rome-Western Mediterranean, with our then-11 year old granddaughter. While I agree that HAL does not provide rock-climbing walls, laser tag, etc., we found that there was quite enough entertainment and activities to keep her busy when we weren't on shore. It was just a coincidence, but the Captain's young daughter was also on board and the two of them became fast friends (nothing like having the Captain say hello to our granddaughter during the cruise every time he saw her). IMO, if the point of the cruise is to explore new destinations and spend time in immersing oneself in the culture and history of interesting places, then there isn't always time or energy for all those activities. But I agree, if you are looking for a different shipboard experience for children, then one of the larger ships on other lines might be more fun.

  2. We were on the Koningsdam for Passover last year. A volunteer Cantor led the Seder. HAL provided a room, appropriate foods (even a Seder plate) and were very respectful. However, there were many Israelies aboard as well as a mix of Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox. The Cantor and most of the passengers went along with a looser, more inclusive format and slight variations on chants/prayers. A few, however, insisted on their versions which led to a little friction. My advice is recognize that the setting is different and appreciate the perspectives of your different Jewish shipmates.

  3. We are considering the Queen Elizabeth July 3 cruise around the British Isles in competition with Caribbean Princess similar cruise. Traveling with our 12 year old granddaughter. Anyone have previous experience regarding likelihood of other children on board, size of balcony cabins for the 3 of us (would book a mini-suite balcony on Princess). Is food quality significantly better on Cunard? Seems the anchor location in Newhaven is closer to Edinburgh than the Princess dock in South Queensferry. Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions would be appreciated!
