Darn, I only just saw this and I'm sailing this week, the deadline to claim refund has expired!

I generally buy a bottle of vodka for the room and the odd beer out on deck so Cheers doesn't make sense for me.

I don't know if it's different for American travellers, but for us euros, using an ATM on arrival is probably the WORST way to forgo lossy cash (outside of doing it at the airport). For the UK at least, travelmoneymax.com will give the rates at all local exchange beuroes in the area

I think it would depend which way the dock is facing and which way the boat pulls in, I don't think there is a standard. We figured that port side would see the sunsets most nights and starboard would see more land so we chose our cabin on that basis.
