We did the whale watching tour with Mendenhall glacier visit through the cruise line and thought it was excellent.  Saw tons of whales and plenty of time to explore Mendenhall.  It was a crowded boat for the whale watching part of the tour but it didn't bother us.

Decided on a smaller boat/less people and booking with Harv & Marv.  Wish us luck!

    Thanks!

We have sailed to Alaska 3 times and have done the whale watching/Mendenhall on each cruise. We typically use outside vendors for excursions. But for whale watching we found it easier as you say to use the cruise line. If anything went wrong (delays, something mechanical etc.) we were under the care of the cruise line.

Bye the way this is an excellent excursion. You WILL see plenty of whales.

    Enjoy

Up Next Allure of the Seas - April 2019

Ovation of the Seas - Alaska June 2019

I do like the idea of being under the care of the cruise line so that was a big factor to consider while making our choice.  In the end I left it up to my husband and he felt he would prefer the smaller boat/less people so we are going with Harv & Marv.

BTW...I see you will be on Allure in April.  We sailed on her last March and loved every minute of it!!  Enjoy!!

  3. Opinion please.  Sailing Ovation in Alaska this August 2019 and will be booking for Juneau a whale watching tour w/Mendenhall glacier and want the best for whale watching experience of course.  Thoughts please on booking through the cruise lines available excursions or finding one on our own?  Cruise line makes it easy but I do want to make sure we get a good group/boat to go out with.

    Thanks all!

  5. That’s right, that is what we were told. Every time we walked through the ship, it looked like 3 kids for every adult, so I believe it.

The other times we were on Oasis and Allure, it didn’t seem like there were as many kids. I will be interested to see how many are on Harmony in November, since that one has the slides. It may be a bigger draw for the kids. As long as I get my turn, that’s okay with me.

Maybe most of the kids will be in school in November so not so many. But yes, you must be a big boy Mark and share the slides. LOL

  6. Many were well behaved. There was a few who loved to ring the door bell to suites on the 12th deck and then scatter. I could hear them running in the corridor at about 1:30 am. Must be new as in prior cruises it was the elevator buttons.

Most, seemed well behaved. The ship was totally sold out, but other than the Character Parade, Captain's Night, embarkation/disembarkation, and those silly sales, it never seemed overly crowded.

    Hi Mark.

First of all I have to admit I completely forgot about Spring Break when we booked that week on Allure. But, having said that, I have to agree with your assessment in that most of the kids were very well mannered. The most we noted were a few noisy congregations in the halls and some of the elevator button pressers. I love kids though and most of their shenanigans are easier for me to laugh off than for other ppl. As long as no one gets hurts, it’s just kids being kids. 2000?! Really? There were 2000? 7. Hi Patty. Thanks for the kind words. We both enjoyed meeting you. It has taken me a little longer to get through this report than I anticipated. I hope to finish the last couple of days soon.

I would really like to do an Alaska Cruise, but I know Susan would not go where it would be cold. Enjoy your planning. I know if I did go there, I would probably look at Princess, only because they have access to some areas that Royal doesn’t. We are busy planning for Harmony in November, then Indy in January and again in July, 2019 in Europe.

    Safe travels, and enjoy Alaska.

    Hey Mark!

I’ve thought about checking Princess also. Have read some good reviews for their Alaska cruise. Has been quite awhile since we’ve sailed with them but maybe will dig deeper before deciding.

You and Susan are busy cruisers!! Hope to bump into you again sometime while out on the water. Till then, enjoy all you have coming up!!

Hi Mark! Enjoying your reviews of Allure. Your title is perfect and quite catchy! :)

Loved the cruise, enjoyed meeting and chatting with both of you and are ready to head out again. Currently planning a 2019 Alaska cruise just trying to decide on Radiance or Ovation. Ovation being newer and bigger is appealing but bigger is not always better. Have been reading reviews by the hundreds. Decisions decisions.
