Glad to help! We loved the Andersen. Beautiful and bountiful breakfast : ) After breakfast we walked to the canal and had our tour, since we didn't have time the day before. We only stayed one night.

We told the staff at the hotel what time we wanted to leave for the terminal and they had a van type taxi ready for the 5 of us. So nice.

We sailed with Royal Caribbean and it was the smoothest embarkation ever.

Thanks for the info. How much is the taxi fare from your hotel to the cruise terminal? We have six people with luggage in our group, will the van fit all of us?

  2. Just visited Naples this past weekend. There's a tour office at the port terminal right by the escalator and they offered half-day/full day tour to all the popular places with very reasonable prices. We joined their full day Pompeii/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast tour and it was quite nice. We shared a minivan with 2 other couples and the driver/guide was professional, friendly, and spoke very good English.

  3. I have checked with my bank and credit card companies about exchanging US$ to Euros this week to prepare for my upcoming trip (first timer). From what I learned, my bank here can exchange the euros for me without a fee and it will be whatever the daily exchange rate at; if I use my bank card to get cash at a foreign ATM, then both the foreign bank/US bank will charge a foreign transaction fee. As to using credit cards on a foreign ATM to withdraw cash, it will be treated as cash advance with a high interest rate charged from the time you make the withdraw. In addition, credit card company like Chase will charge a 5% transaction fee, Capital One does not charge a fee but their CA rate is higher.

I'm now leaning toward getting euros here beforehand and still carry a Capital One card as a back up.

  4. I would really appreciate it if anyone who had stayed in the following hotels could give feedback:

    Hotel Mozart-Spanish Steps

    Hotel Rinascimento--Campo de’ Fiori

    Lh Royal Suites-Campo de’ Fiori

    Hotel Nationale-Pantheon

I believe they are all in good locations and not far off from each other in prices. We would like to find a place that's clean, comfortable (bed), and not too noisy at night. Good breakfast would be a plus:).

  5. Again, thank you all for your helpful suggestions. We are looking for 10/30-11/1 of 2014. This is a last minute decision to go on a cruise and visit a place we have never been to... I'm diligently searching hotels and reading reviews as I typed, now focusing on Piazza Navonna/Pantheon/Campo di Fiori/Spanish Steps areas, and hopefully can find a good one between $150-$250/night.

Every time I read the reviews of a property with good scores, there're always people saying bad things about it which led me to have second thoughts

  6. Thank you all for your responses! I have read quite a few posts from the forum and checked out the hotels suggested by many. Most of the recommended hotels have no availability for the dates I'm looking for:( That's why I tried to get an idea of a good area to search more, looks like Pantheon/Spanish Steps area is a good bet. Is taking a taxi the only way to get to the port and other major attractions, if staying at a hotel near Vatican?

  7. First time in Rome and first time doing a Western Mediterranean cruise in early November. There're some anxiety for sure. We plan to arrive 2 days before the cruise date, which will leave us about two and a half days to tour Rome (arrive early morning in day-2).

What will be a good area to stay? (convenience+safety)

What are the must see places in this short time span?

Is it safe to go out at night?

Should we join a day tour and what are the good ones?

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.
