  1. Hello Snorgy  We are also joining in Adelaide.  How long are you on for?  The last time we were on Cunard which was May 2018, the corkage was US$20 but you don't pay the 15% gratuity/surcharge.  Corkage is payable in any restaurants or bars but you can only take wine/Champagne to these venues.  You can also take on spirits for consumption in your cabin but not to be consumed in bars/restaurants.  We take on our Australian wines as the selection on the Cunard menu is not what we enjoy.  We usually;;y restock at each port.  Hope this helps.

    Hi CeeDee49

We are cruising Melbourne to Sydney with a stop over in Burnie Tassie.  Only a three day cruise to get a 'taste' of Cunard cruising.  We thought we would bring a couple of bottles of bubbles on board to celebrate my birthday.  Happy to pay for the occasional drink!  Have a wonderful cruise!

  3. Thanks everyone for your responses. We mainly cruise with Cunard and understand formal nights are not quite as formal as on RCI but will still dress up. David in a dark suit rather than a tux and me still in a long dress or cocktail length just not Cunard glitz. I thought there would be something on their web site stating formal nights.

  4. Hello

Can you log onto Voyage Personaliser once you have paid your deposit or do you only get access once payment in full is made? We currently have 3 cruises booked but can't access any of them.

    Many thanks

  5. There seem to be plenty of flights to Cairns, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast on 31st December.

If you can't see them any other way try checking Virgin Australia, Qantas, or Jetstar websites directly.

Just keep in mind this is summer holidays in Australia and the most expensive time of the year - especially over new year. If you were wanting to spend a few days in Canberra then it is a 3 hour bus ride or 40 minute flight. Spectacular NYE fireworks (I'd even invite you to our balcony to watch) and hotels are considerably cheaper than anywhere in a major city or coastal area. Whatever your decision you will need to book accommodation very soon. You may find the Sunshine and Gold Coast are already heavily booked. Also flights tend to go up in price 3 months out. So, you need to make a decision. Wherever you go in Oz you will enjoy. You now have far too many choices.

  6. Again, thanks for all the information.

We are definitely flying into Sydney and flying right back out to our 'alternate destination' due to the hotel pricing on New Years in Sydney. That is not changeable.

One son has already been to Sydney so it's not such a short time there for him. And DH and I will probably stay an extra night or two before flying to Melbourne where we will stay with his college friend.

We are not planning on any long drives due to time constraints.

So, it's USA to Sydney to "undecided". Then back to Sydney for the time there and the sons' return flights. Then DH and I will fly to Melbourne and return to USA from there. International flights are booked and unchangeable.

We have heard such wonderful things about the beautiful ocean areas of Australia that it seemed like a good idea to go to a beachy location to unwind for a couple days and maybe do a tour or two from there. Then we would be rested and a little acclimated to the time difference in order to make the best use of the time in Sydney.

Does it make sense in reality? To these outsiders it made sense.

Unfortunately we arrive at about 7 am which isn't very conducive to flights out of Sydney to other places apparently.

Please, we are all ears for your thoughts.

    Thank you!

    Hello

What date do you arrive in Sydney??

  7. On your way to Melbourne drive south along the coast to Batemans Bay, some beautiful places to visit on the drive, then spend a few days in Canberra (incidentally where I live so ask any questions). Weather will be warm but no humidity so makes it quite pleasant for getting out and about. Not if you enjoy culture then you will enjoy Canberra. Would need at least 3 full days to visit all the sights.

  8. Ah! Ah! I can relate to your story, I knew Opera Mary as well and you are right in what you say. I also used to be friendly with another famous Cunarder you may have come across. Erma Kintz. part of the same crowd.,

We got on very well but boy could she give it some verbal when need be.;) I have lost touch with here the past 18 months I am hoping she is still well although she is well into her 80's.

Here below is a photo of her on the deck of QM2 world 2009 or it may have been 2010. Either way, she never changed over the years.

Cunard characters I call them.:) and a rare breed these days.

One of the remaining ones from that group is Dennie Farmer whom I am very fond of and I met up with her in Cyprus recently when QM2 came into port.

I took her out for the day. A lovely lady and still sailing at 84yrs old and of course she is God Mother to QE .

She has already booked her next two world voyages for the next two years so God willing we will see her again at the bar at her usual seat in the Commodore Club. :)

    Here is Erma.

Maggie don't forget our "Terry" and the "Ducklings", one of the great characters of recent times!

  9. On our QE crossing I remember Captain Clarke saying at his midday address we would be passing very close to where the Titanic went down around 9pm that night. It was one of worst days/nights and just as we were sitting down for 8.30 dinner, teetering around in our high heels, the ship lurched and heaved, a waiter dropped his tray of plates, we all grabbed for our wines glasses/bottles, but nothing moved off the table, then next thing everything was back to the norma rocking and rolling of the Atlantic. We all looked at our watches and said "that's the Titanic letting us know we're crossing over her grave"! It will be a fabulous experience and just remember the Captain won't do anything to endanger his crew and passengers.

  10. Scrapnana, Kathy, How will we ever forget the QE crossing in January!!! Not being an experienced cruiser at the beginning of our 75 days WC segments, I didn't know what to expect Southampton to New York, and yes it was very wild for most of the 8 day crossing, but the restaurants were still full every night. I would do it again in winter months if the opportunity comes our way.

  11. It's all about the dressing up on a WC or segment. We did 75 days earlier this year on QE from SOU to Hong Kong and have just booked 71 days on the QV Sydney to SOU WC in 2016. If other cruisers do not want to dress for dinner on formal or informal nights that is their wish so long as they don't spoil it for those that make the effort. Sitting in the Mid Ships Lounge prior to second dinner is an experience watching all the elegantly dressed strolling past. It's why we cruise Cunard. Really, packing for such a extended time is not really a problem. Finding where to pack it all away in the cabin is. My husband and I took 4 suitcases and 2 carry on bags. We both take a few "disposable clothes" thatwe won't mind parting with along the way if we decide to refresh our wardrobe. The gorgeous Maggiemou, whom we had the pleasure of meeting on the QE, dresses to impress every night - hence so many suitcases. Enjoy your 61 days and I suggest your wife reads Maggie's book. It will give her a great understanding of a WC and segment.

  12. Hi Maggie,

I did send a couple of emails earlier, and you are correct, I use a different email when travelling to avoid the hundreds of spam messages I receive on my main email.

I'm using gmail if that helps ?

    Hello JnA

Now I know why I have not had a response to my emails. They've gone to btinternet. My email account us on the roll call.

Enjoying reading your blog. D and Ai are seriously thinking of doing HK to SOU next year.

Missing our friends on the QE.

    Christine and David

  13. I don't think so, several people have commented on this, and the laissez faire attitude in various parts of the ship.

I'm pleased to say it wasn't just the Aussies this time being blamed for lack of dress standards. I witnessed 3 British couples, at least 2 of them awere world cruisers, sitting on stools at the Mid Ships, wearing short sleeve shirts, not a jacket in sight, and that was a formal night. I asked a waiter why they were served and he said they were not allowed to upset the passengers. So much for those of us who dress up and respect the code!
