thank you, any Hotels you could recommend?

My personal favorite is the Malaga Inn.  It's practically worth the trip to Mobile all by itself.  The oldest part was built during the War Between the States, so it literally reeks of history.  (There are modern conveniences such as an elevator, if that's of concern.)  The inn is located a short Uber ride from the port and the parking rates aren't bad at all ($7 per day).  There are different room rates depending on the room.  This place is a touch on the expensive side, but you can't beat the experience or the location.  Like I said, the Malaga Inn almost is worth a trip to Mobile on its own.

A lot of the places I normally would suggest have removed the park 'n' cruise option from their web sites (hopefully temporarily).  That list includes the Admiral Inn (I'm a sucker for art decco, so this one was a special treat the one time I stayed there).  They used to have a working arrangement with the county garage next door, but I don't remember the details and those details may not matter any more.  If the Admiral does resurrect its cruise package, particulars can be had here:

The Microtel in Saraland has been recommended here many times in the past (and once again by another poster in this thread).  I've never been tempted myself.  It's quite a ways out and the listed price ($185.99 plus tax) is a little more than I want to pay.   Other people have had very nice things to say about it, though.  It's probably worth at least a look.

I've got a trip out of Mobile scheduled for April.  I'm booked the the Wingate, which is out towards the airport (but still closer to the cruise terminal, I think, than Saraland).  I haven't stayed there before, but it looks OK on paper (or rather, a web page) and the price ($129 plus tax) seemed right.  We shall see.

  2. If I wasn't an 30 year IT vet, I'd probably say something snarky about now.  As it is, I wish I could buy a few of Carnival's code grinders a beer.  They probably could use one.  The spiffy tool to see if my 17 January cruise on the sensation has been cancelled returns this:

  3. I'd be a lot more worried about getting around New Orleans, since it's been rated as the 34th most dangerous city on the planet:

    http://www.businessinsider.com/most-violent-cities-in-the-world-2017-4/#38-teresina-brazil-had-4284-homicides-per-100000-residents-13

Statistically you're safer in such garden spots as Juarez and Chihuahua than you are in New Orleans, so be careful getting to the ship. That almost certainly will be the most dangerous part of your cruise.

Wait a minute. You're from St. Louis and you want to know if Cozumel is safe? Really? Check that list. I think you'll find your hometown is the 14th most dangerous city in the world. You'd actually be safer in Tijuana or Guatemala City than in St. Louis.

  4. Statistically, in terms of safety the Yucatan ranks about even with the US state of Maine and is statistically safer than such notoriously crime-ridden parts of the US as North Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. If you cruise out of NOLA, the most dangerous venue on your trip will be the city you leave from/return to.

Can't speak for taxis, but Autoprogreso enjoys a decent rep on sites like TripAdvisor. They offer a bus trip to Dzibilchaltun for $29 per adult and $22 per child. Details here:

    http://www.autoprogreso.com/DzibiEn.html

There may be other ways to get to Dzibilchaltun (Lawson's Excursions leaps to mind), but Autoprogreso will be the most convenient. (They have the concession for transportation to/from the cruise terminal out on the pier.) In my experience, Autoprogreso's prices are pretty hard to beat, too. I booked their excursion into Merida on my last trip and had no complaints.

BTW, first class busses (what Autoprogreso uses) in Mexico are probably a notch or two higher on the comfort scale than anything you'll find in the states. These aren't the Mexican version of the "chicken busses" that one finds in Central America.

  5.

Thank you, ma'am. That was a lot of useful information.

I'm looking at the Yucatan as a potential retirement site, so I'm hoping to use the time in Progreso to get a first impression of the place. This sounds much better for that purpose than just riding through town on a cruise ship excursion. Plus, I'm hopeful I'll get a chance to see how much Spanish I've held on to after all these years.

Again, much obliged for the info.

  6. It has moved over the years since we've been going to Progreso. Last year it was not far from the bus terminal. I think we had to walk like 2 blocks but you can ask anyone and they know where it is.

This deal almost sounds too good to be true. What's the catch? :-)

Seriously, I've been trying to figure out what I want to do on my day in Progreso and this sounds like it would be right up my alley. The price is about $3, correct? Do they want pesos (fine by me) or Yanqui money? And, to get to the DD I'd take the bus from out at the end of the pier into Progreso, then walk a couple of blocks. Sound about right?

Next thing I need to do is find a decent map of the town and see where things are in relation to each other I guess. Anybody recommend a good one, either free or for purchase?

    Thanks!!

  7. Since Carnival doesn't offer any fishing on their shore excursion list, is there any safe private fishing charter for a family of 3? Prefer both bottom/deep sea fishing not too far from the ship.

You mean like this one? ;)

Small confession. I found it by working backwards. I looked for all fishing expeditions on Carnival's web site, then started making a note of which ones were offered in places I might want to go. That's how Cozumel wound up on my list of potential destinations in the first place.

  8. You may be right. Not sure. Sorry I can't help you folks out more

Apparently you're not the first or most famous person to get bitten by this sort of thing:

    http://www.wired.com/2012/09/youtube-flags-democrats-convention-video-on-copyright-grounds/

The YouTube video of Michelle Obama's address to the 2012 Democratic convention got flagged the same way. One of the sites pushing the "illegal" video was barackobama.com.

It turns out YouTube uses an automatic system to decide what gets flagged. Your guess is as good as mine exactly how that system works, but apparently it detected something in the audio or video that made it decide there was a copyright issue in this case. Not sure why some are seeing it and not others. Worked fine for me.
