  1. We will be sailing on the harmony of the Seas this December. I am interested in dining at Wonderland with my family (husband and three kids). While booking online, I'm only given the option of paying the adult price for all 5 of us ($49pp). I called RCI and the agent said to go ahead and reserve and pay for the reservation now ($250!) and the children's discounted rate will be reimbursed once I am onboard.

I'm a little skeptical because it is a lot of money. (Kids 6-12 are $10 and 5 and under are free). Does anyone have any experience or advice? Thanks!

  2. We will be sailing the Oasis in a few days and I'm trying to get everything organized. My child is 3 years old and has a severe peanut allergy. I have it noted on our reservation. When we drop him off, do we drop off an Epipen as well? We don't anticipate peanut exposure in the kids club, but better to be safe than sorry. Does anyone know RC's policy on this?

    Thanks!

  3. We'll be sailing on our first RC cruise in a few weeks and I've started packing for the family. We've only sailed Disney so are excited to try something new.

For formal night, would my husband look out of place if he wore linen dress pants and a linen button down shirt? If need be, I can pack him a blazer but I know he would be MUCH happier without. Thanks for the input.

  4. NCL does not have wave phones.

The Pearl has the iconcierge service (one time fee) that allows messaging and texting others onboard.

Not sure that kids would want to be stuck carrying a walkie-talkie. But, while you will get many responses here from folks who have used radios "with good results", due to the nature of a ship (steel box), radio efficiency is going to be spotty at best. Perhaps one deck difference and half a ship length, depending on how many closed doors, would be possible, but anything more might or might not work, depending on the day. The crew use UHF radios in frequencies not available to GMRS/FRS radios sold in stores, and they have high wattage levels and repeater antenna around the ship.

Do you know what the fee is for i concierge? Is it per stateroom or per device? Thanks!

  5. We are sailing the Pearl to Alaska in a few days. We have only sailed Disney Cruise Lines before and on Disney, they offer "wave phones" for parties on the ship to communicate with each other.

How do parties communicate on NCL? Do they offer a phone that can be taken out of the room and used for on board communication with other passengers?

If not, do cell phones work (without huge fees)?

We also have a nice "walkie talkie" set. Should we bring that?

We have three kids and are often running in different directions (because of the difference in age and schedules) so contacting each other while on the ship is important.

  6. You are not going to like this, but I really think that you should reconsider Alaska. Alaska is all about the ports and things off the ships. You pretty much get off when you dock and don't get back on until the last minute. It is go, go , go and that is hard to do with ones as small as yours.

You are going to have to do excursions, either through the ship or on your own, but either way they can get very expensive very quickly. Sure you can go and just wander around the towns but you really want to get out and see things.

Thanks for your perspective. I've already booked excursions for all the ports. We travel quite a bit so my kids are used to the go-go-go aspect of vacation. The older two understand that the adventures we share are directly related to how well they behave. The baby, thankfully, is pretty easy going. If he's fed and cuddled, he is happy.

The reason we booked NCL instead of Disney was that it was so much less expensive so we could do interesting excursions and not really feel the pinch.

  7. I just booked a cruise to Alaska on the Pearl. We have three children (7,5,14 months). We go on a Disney Cruise to the Caribbean every winter.

This summer, we decided to switch things up and try NCL to take us to Alaska.

We got two connecting staterooms and I've booked excursions that we are all excited about.

Does anyone have any tips for traveling to Alaska with the kids? Anything specific to NCL?

    Thanks!
