  1. Which cruise line(s) have the best music for us adults in the 50 and 60's age range?

I like all types of rock and pop from the 70's through current day, but NOT rap or hip-hop!.

I also like some Reggae/Caribbean/Island music on Caribbean cruises.

Last cruises were on Celebrity where music has gone downhill.

Ideal music for us would be a lounge with acoustical rock (guitar & singer); party band that plays rock and Island Reggae by the pool and lounge later at night and maybe a piano bar - but not an old standard (Sinatra) type of piano bar - something more from the last 30 years or so.

I don't like Hip hop or Rap but I don't like classical or big band jazz either. I like music that rocks a little be it rock, pop or reggae.

Which cruise line suits our needs more and still has good food and service?

  2. If your BIL decides to use a scooter I'll add a strong recommendation that he tries one out and gets a little experience and training ahead of the cruise, preferably with a Occupational Therapist. Perhaps some OT clinics might even have scooters available for use in training at their facility.

Doing this will prevent several problems: It will help determine if he is capable of using one and the training/experience will help him learn to control the scooter in order to avoid injury to both himself and those in his path. I'm sure no one wants the disappointment of finding out at the last minute that he is unable to operate a scooter safely on board.

The start of a cruise is not a good place to learn how to operate these for the first time.

  3. I just looked into this 11 days ago on the Constellation. In the casino, OBC can be exchanged for chips (or credits) marked 'promo' or similar. If you play with a promo chip and have earnings to show for it, those earning are yours and you can cash them out. You cannot however simply walk back to the cage with $500 in promo chips and cash out, they value would simply go back as OBC.

Did they still charge the 5%.

There are ways to change promo chips for redeemable chips, but it takes a little casino play and will not necessarily come out 100% - might give a little back for house odds. Play them on a 1:1 even odds game like roulette black or red.

  4. Sounds like the Eclipse doesn't work for the Celebrity Cruise line managed by Lisa Lutoff-Perlo or she is unaware that her statements here are not being followed on the ship......or she doesn't care.

    ...

Celebrity has a huge history of announcing nice on board features and amenities that are never actually put into place or cut back quicker than you can say cut backs.

Clearly disconnects between marketing hype and on board budget constraints.

  6. Hello!

My husband and I did our first Celebrity cruise in 2014, on the Eclipse on a Caribbean itinerary in January. I noticed that, unlike other cruises we had done in the past with other lines, there were very few drink servers on the pool decks coming around to offer to get people drinks. I had to go and wait in a line at the pool bar to get drinks. While I'm sure there were roving drink servers, I did not notice them. On other ships on other lines it seemed like they were everywhere and it was easy to flag one down for a bevvy.

Just wondering if that is just typical for Celebrity, or if it is becoming more of the norm across all lines with the onset of these increasingly popular drink packages?

    Thank you!

    :-)

Years ago Celebrity was just like the other lines where the drink servers were almost a nuisance if you were not looking to order a drink. They were everywhere, pool deck, open deck, buffet, dining room, every lounge, theater, etc. They've cut back over the years, most notably when they introduced the drink packages but especially after they started including the classic drink packages with a good percentage of their fares as part of promotions that have been nearly non-stop for the past few years.

Used to be simple and quick to get a drink at your seat and/or without a wait. Not so quick any longer.

  7. Hi,

Has anyone else had problems with the Celebrity Website?...

Actually, the Celebrity Website has for the most part had one type of major problem or another pretty constantly for at least the past 5 years. It seems just as they get one problem fixed another crops up. Most long time Cruise Critic members who frequent Celebrity are completely amazed that management would allow such terrible web site implementation and management to go on for years but it has continued to happen. A lot of us are certain this has got to have cost Celebrity lots of business over time and created huge increases in customer call center volume for them on issues that could have been handled online and straightening out problems for customers caused by their system.

If you are currently on a cruise, have you tried talking with the on-board "future cruises" booking agent or are you not on a Celebrity or RCL cruise now?

  8. Considering the difficulty and planning required in making such an itinerary change and the extensive "you asked we answered" advertising campaign, the obvious answer is that they called some people for the sole reason of being able to support their ad campaign slogan. It is easy to design questions and surveys to support a conclusion in advance, and to design statistics that way as well. Besides 85% of all people know that 73% of all statistics are made up on the spot!

As for all the complaints here: Those that don't like the idea would do well to complain on Celebrity's social media as well.

One of the things we look forward to while cruising is the sail-away from port and the evening activities at sea. We also love walks on deck, or sitting on our balcony at night, just staring out to sea. This just wouldn't be the same while docked at a port. We also love having coffee on the balcony in the morning while the ship pulls into port.

I also agree with others that the Caribbean offers little appeal in terms of overnight activity compared to some European cities where we've overnighted in the past such as Venice. I'd much rather be on the ship enjoying the food and entertainment we've paid for and this is just more fun while cruising and not while tied up at the dock.

  9. If you read some of the numerous other threads on this subject, you will see that some people actually WERE asked by Celebrity about this change.

Clearly, they could not call every single person who has booked any of these cruises to get their opinions.

In order for Celebrity to make this change, it would appear that the MAJORITY of folks they asked, responded that they preferred the overnights.

There will always be people that are unhappy with a change like this, and on the other hand there will be people who applaud Celebrity for making the change.

You can't please all of the people all of the time.

  10. Many selected the salmon entrée and I heard good reports on it. I can’t enjoy salmon. It’s distressing to further thin their ranks after Nat Geo’s display of their strenuous life-draining efforts to swim upstream – unless grilled in a nice butter garlic sauce.

It's true!! I tried an experiment after reading this and after being grilled in a nice butter garlic sauce my salmon no longer swam upstream!

Thanks for cluing me in on this.

  11. ... Your cabin and public restrooms (for now) on a ship are about the only private areas left... and yes the balcony is part of your cabin but is OPEN:eek:. Your entrance into the "balcony club" might be recorded for later viewing.

Shhhhh! Good think Mrs. Crazy doesn't read Cruise Critic much!

  12. I watched an episode of Mighty Cruise Ships a couple of weeks ago and this particular episode was showcasing the Celebrity Solstice on a 17 night Australian Top End cruise. During this cruise, in response to receiving feedback from the guests that the buffet dishes were becoming repetitive, the Head Chef went ashore at one of the ports (I cannot recall exactly which port) and bought an assortment of fresh fish that had been caught that morning and created a beautiful buffet dish with one of the huge fish that had been purchased.

Me thinks this was more in response to the TV/Film cameras than to feedback from guests.

Do you really believe everything you see on reality TV shows is unscripted and truly real life impromptu events?

  13. It seems like most of the Celebrity ship names have been about time or space.

Combing the space concept along with their trend towards more and more extra cost items to spend money on board perhaps they could call one of the new ships the "black hole"

  14. In my opinion, although this schedule change is undesirable, Celebrity have been totally honest and above board!...

Looks like that last post was pretty up front.

I noticed that Marineboy is in the UK. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that he is the only one who is reporting having received a proper honest notice. Could this be due to differences in UK laws and regulations? I'm disappointed that Celebrity has been dishonest excuses to other customers and hope they come clean to all passengers ASAP. From the various posts on the boards it seems like this is well beyond the situation of a couple customer service clerks being ill informed.

  15. Can anyone provide an update on how the engine repairs worked out?

I believe there was at least one sailing after the scheduled work in the Bahamas that may have returned...not sure.

Just curious..but what does the crew do during short dry dock periods? Hope they got a free vacation at a nice Bahamas hotel!

Crew provided a free vacation at a nice hotel? HA HA HA HA HA HA :D

I bet most had some serious maintenance and cleaning assignments for little or no additional pay.

  16. Does anybody know when in Jan. the drydock period will be? This is what happens when one tries to be fancy (azipods). Regular shafting to propellors has served well since the 1870s Yet some folks cant leave well enough alone.

Mechanical problems are ridiculous. I think they should go back to using only sails and oars. Sails and oars worked for thousands of years and never ran out of fuel or had any issues with bearings or motors. And they didn't generate any pollution or carbon emissions either. All this engine driven stuff is just trying to be fancy. Look were progress is taking us...just ridiculous.

  17. On my last med-cruise they only offered 20% off. On my med cruise 2 years prior, they offered 2 for one some nights (not for Muranos though).

During our overnight in Venice, we had what could have been a fine dinner made worse by the crew. The servers were fine- it was the crew members who were allowed to eat there that night that made it worse. How many cell-phone pics can you take of you and your co-workers?...*flash* *flash* *flash* *flash* *flash* *flash* *flash*...

The disturbance was just bad Karma because you choose to pay extra to eat in the specialty restaurant instead of dining at one of Venice's wonderful restaurants while you were in port.

  18. My son is the same. Gets excited, eats too much and vomits. On night 2 or 3 of a 10 night cruise the waiter gave him 2 deserts at dinner, then he ran around in kids club and vomited (i'm not surprised!!). They called us immediately, we had to clean him up ourselves then report to the doctor. They took his temp and insisted on injecting him with Phenergan (wouldn't let us leave without it despite my insistence, that I am his mother, he does this, it's normal for him). They injected him and quarantined him in our room for 24 hours. After 24 hours, he had to report to the doctor again and get temp taken again. As I knew he would be, he was fine and released from in-room quarantine. Moral of the story, from now on he will eat only 1 desert........

Does he do this at home? Overeat and then vomit? If so I'd be very concerned about an eating disorder. Don't mean to be intrusive but just wanted to point out this concern.

  19. We ordered six bottles to be delivered straight to the DR on embarkation day...will our waiter inform us they are there? Thanks all for your help!!

Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

The regular dining room waiter does not do wine. There is a sommelier (a special wine waiter) who takes wine orders and pours the wine so they are the ones who will take care of this.

Someone posted above that the advance gift orders don't include a gratuity charge. Since the sommeliers income depends on the gratuities I wonder how they feel about this and how service will be.

  20. There is no room for facts in discussions of formal night dress, music volume or comfort animals.

When I bring my comfort dog, Barkey, to dinner on formal nights can he wear the service dog vest I bought for him on Amazon or does he need to wear a more formal vest?

(With apologies to those who look at life more seriously than me and to all of those with legitimate service dogs as well.)
