  1. 'CANT' is a word that people use and its not true. 2 children in a tandum stroller weighed more than my scooter. folded the scooter weighed maybe 50 lbs. and the batter was no more weight than a book probably lighter. so don't can can't. the rules are not update probably to the folding size and weight of the newer scooters. that I would believe. but I know what I had.

ok when saying can't im not saying YOUR not capable.... i meant THEIR rules will say it is not allowed.. however different cruise lines have different restrictions..

i had 2 weight lifters with me.. lol we certainly COULD have lifted me and a chair.. heck they can even carry it up flights of stairs and do( with me in it even)..but the cruise ship/line does not allow it. though you can always try as the last choice is up to capt. i bet if we tried to break the rules that were written he would have allowed at after seeing the people i was with were more then capable.. but to us it certainly wasn't worth going through that.

  2. Are you saying you cannot book as a group unless you book directly with NCL? If so, I don't believe that is true. The TA worked with the group event coordinator for us.. The TA is my cousin working for a small local firm, so was just our 6 cabins as the group.

that is what lacey malone the sup. for group booking on ncl told us... and she also gave me a print out of our group and those who had booked through a site/travel agent were NOT included. this is her words ...copy and pasted from her emails

    "Hello,

Do you know if everyone has booked direct with Norwegian Cruise Line? "

    and...

"Any reservation that was not booked directly with Norwegian Cruise Line will not be included in the group. Here is how the group perks and amenities work. Norwegian Groups; for every 8 cabins you book, at a minimum, double occupancy per cabin (16 guests)"

  3. We had 6 cabins, 16 people last year. My TA said you just get more perks with more. I believe we could have just had 2 cabins and still would have been a group. We got the base level which was $50 OBC per cabin. But also made group dinning reservations for 2 nights. I recall it taking a few days so we all made individual reservations online just in case( and later called to cancel those).

you mention your travel agent.. must have been a group within the travel agency. NCL will not even include people in your group as part of your group if they booked through a travel agent..( we lost a couple as they had already booked through a travel site instead of directly through ncl..

  4. The page that speaks to groups says that there needs to be 14 people and 7 cabins. Is this correct? Our group meets that criteria, although we have different levels of cabins from ocean view to 2-bedroom suite. Any help would be appreciated. I am not getting any from my TA at NCL.

we JUST went in april 10-17( everyone on board THAT WE SPOKE TO who cruised before agreed WORST CRUISE EVER ,but was likely do to 1/2 the staff getting off the ship and newbies that needed training getting on) anyhow when we went it was 16 pll and 8 cabins.. it does not matter what cabins as we also had a mix.

  5.

I would like them to institute a " discount " or something like that.

IE; if you pay 15pp you get once a day and if you pay a little more you get a little more..

I completely understand cost cutting for profitability but you cant keep cutting while at the same time raising prices...

    makes sense!!!

  6. haha I like this answer. I wish I had a form. My cabin steward asked verbally "WHICH one would you like".

and you should have verbally replied "both"

i still cant get over this whole discussion. and it does show me that everyone who cruised before feels the same..and knows what to expect. so glad to know the cruise on the breakaway where people didn't even have their room cleaned for a few days and no towel animals ect. truly is NOT the norm. as nothing else on that sailing was either hopefully.thing is one ncl lady even admitted cruises have people from all over and they touch things. and that germs spread.. so i bet the lack of cleaning in rooms was also the same in halls.ect. as in our group alone, 5 people became very ill( 2 spent several nights in the hospital, 8 nights and 7 nights.)ect.

so i am learning from experience and you guys.. no matter what have room cleaned.. forget those who say not to...

  7. i myself am 100 % chair bound.however, my parents had the same thought as you did.. they usually will get a regular cabin room.. and she folds the wheelchair as walking from the door to inside the room is very doable.and the step out the balcony, and into the shower, for her this is also doable. They can get a bench in the shower( you can ask most cruise lines for this and they will have it in the shower of even a regular cabin.

As others have said the ships can be quite long, she does use a manual chair when out and about on the floors and halls. i would think no matter what cabin you get, you might want to consider having at least a manual chair with you in case he needs it..

  8. The day we docked in St. John, there was an extensive flea market set up right near the port area. It was all covered with tents, so the rain did not bother us. It helped that my mother had packed a waterproof poncho that fit over her wheelchair! My mother loved shopping in the flea market for souvenirs, scarves, trinkets, food, etc. It was so close to the ship that even someone being pushed in a manual wheelchair could be directed to the market.

I think there was also a row of restaurants near the port. I don't recall whether they were wheelchair-accessible, however.

Some of the other shopping and sightseeing areas in town are not too far away, others are a bit of a hike, including some uphill. There was an indoor mall that had shops and a museum in it, and an indoor market with food, souvenirs, etc. There is some interesting outdoor art and the "Reversing Falls" which are not that exciting but might be worth checking out if you can catch a cab or accessible tour to that part of town.

I think it's worth venturing off the ship and going as far as you feel you want to go.

again,THANK YOU SO MUCH.. no better person to ask then someone who tried it in a wheel chair.. did you mil also get off the ship at halifax? if so do you ming giving any info on if that one is also worth getting off the ship..? thanks again!!

  9. Hopefully, with a group that big you went through group sales, as there are perks for a large group and I'm sure they could help with reservations.

they likely didn't qualify yet for the group.. as they only count 2 people per cabin as group members.. and you need to have 16 people and 8 cabins booked directly through ncl.

we had over 30 people on the breakaway april 10-17 2016,we did qualify as a group.. and still never had a meal with all of us together.. but we were totally fine eating separate.LOL...we managed at the buffet to sit close one night.. and the people setting up for the make your own pizza in the rear of the ship were actually very kind ( NOT the norm for staff on this ship during this specific sailing)...and allowed us to all pose for group pictures in front of the window.

basically you may find you dont all want seating at the same time in the same place. as different people may be doing different activities.

  10. my parents sailed on the breakaway 2-3 times. and they said the shows have NEVER changed. still rock of ages, and burn the floor.. same show as previous sailings (and they sailed on it the first month it was available)..

beware.. we all( 30+ people) sailed on the break away on 4/10/16-4/17/16 and it was by far the worst cruise anyone who i spoke to has ever been on.not to mention

5 out of our group alone ended up VERY sick after.. (with 8 night hospitalizations) .dont know about other guests..

the staff were very rude(even swore at random guest calling them" F#@&ing A$$#o!@" for touching their cart as they moved it so disabled guests could get by..!

rooms not getting cleaned, and my parents will NEVER sail on that ship again.. ( the gem or dawn, yes.. not the breakaway.)

    shows/activities getting cancelled ect.

hopefully for your sake they have improved ,and/or trained the new staff or something..

  11. That's when I appear at GS and remove the tips for the room steward.

i wish we thought to do that, though im not sure if i would have..as i said i didn't know what to expect a.. the lack of them cleaning rooms was the least of our worries.. due to their words" about 1/2 the crew getting sent to the epic, they had to bring in new trainees" and think i actually had one of the better room stewards..(unlike the one up the hall around the corner that was actually swearing at guests)

my family(over 30 people) were on the cruise.. and my parents are experienced cruisers.. and they didn't even get a room steward for a few days! then the guy took their obviously dirty towels that were crunched under the sink and hung them up!. so they had to drench the towels in the shower so they would bring clean ones.

again so excited as everything i see and hear seems that this will be a whole new experience.

  12. this cabin does exists..i have it booked for june 25th .i was told it is a wheelchair accessible cabin. and i hope it truly is or i wont be able to use the cabin as i am wheelchair bound. maybe that's why they told you you can get bumped? i would imagine you might get bumped as there are not many w/c accessible cabins on the ship.

  13. wow.. i am amazed.. i am going on the carnival sunshine,, so i read this.. and i really guess the service was as bad as experienced cruisers saw on the ncl breakaway disaster cruise i took in april. noone would have complained about having the cabin cleaned only once a day... there were several cabins that were not cleaned at all everyday!!

i guess we will feel very spoiled on this upcoming cruise if they do in fact clean the cabin 2x a day!!!

  14. And frankly, those who wouldn't feel guilty, would also probably have no issue going to their doctor and getting a note saying they needed an accessible cabin anyways (and I'm sure many doctors would sign the form).

true.. but the chances go down drastically when not only do they have to be slightly dishonest, but also ask a doctor to be dishonest for them, and have a doctor be dishonest enough to write it ...

NOT SAYING IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN.. but many who will say yes disabled to get the room will not want to even admit to their doctor they want to do so... much less have the dr. sign on that.

  15. Can't speak for the Original Poster (OP) but I can for my mother. Anytime she wants a note for anything or paperwork completed, there is a $25 charge.

We usually take 2-3 cruises a year, plus stay at between 10-15 hotels a year - what if all of them started to request a doctor's letter for their files?

well if your mom is not known/liked enough by the doctor for him to hand it to her at the visit...(do not ask the secretary, but the actual doctor WHILE seeing him/her)..then she would get the paper ONCE, and if the disability is permanent,it will say so,and she would keep it safe, and reuse it.

  16. Hi John,

Where would you want it to stop, do I have to provide a doctors letter every time I require reasonable adjustment when trying to live as normal life as I can.

So that you understand it is discriminatory for any provider of a service to require someone who is disabled to do something that an able bodied person doesn't - namely pay for a doctors letter, an able bodied person doesn't have to provide a letter to say they are "fit to cruise"

As I said in my original post

    "Hi,

I have a certain amount of sympathy for the cruise lines as they are sometimes between a rock and a hard place.

I am sailing from San Francisco in October and have booked an accessible cabin which I need, I booked this in the UK (which as most will know that there are similar disability laws in the UK but with differences). I received a letter from the cruise line asking for a letter from my doctor to prove that I needed the accessible cabin. I wrote back to them expressing how impressed I was with them in the fact that they were trying to ensure that the correct people were able to use these cabins but as my doctor would charge for this letter I felt that it was discriminatory for me to pay to prove that I am disabled, I also advised them that I would willingly provide them with a letter from my doctor but at their expense.

This was several months ago but I haven't heard anything from them.

    Pete"

It is a shame that you failed to quote the full post as I have highlighted relevant points that show your post up a borderline offensive.

    Pete

ok pete!!! so instead of paying the doctors for the note, and the cruise line asking , lets say someone who wants a "larger room " does so with no dr. note... now you cant even go!!! wasn't it worth the dr. note? ?????

    ALSO>>>>>

if you are truly disabled,(not saying your not)chances are more then likely you should see your doctor before traveling . so WHILE there, request the note in hand from the dr.... it wont cost you a thing!! plus your disability most likely causes extra dr. visits ,and/or visits with a specialist.. who know you, and therefor will give you the note!

a great idea comes form your post... they can make it so that the note must be faxed /sent to them directly from your doctor.
