I appreciate the advice. I guess one of my problems is narrowing it down to the best hotel for the price, and deciding whether to stay at two different hotels in two different areas, pre-cruise (one night) and post-cruise (two nights), or stay at the same place both times.
My list is long. I like the look and the reviews for each of these hotels and none of them are listed as being in the "sketchy" area of town. Here's my huge working list, along with prices for one of the nights we're in town:
Yurbban Trafalgar Hotel - $192
K+K Hotel Picasso - $178
Hotel Barcelona Catedral - $163
Olivia Plaza Hotel - $191
Hotel Jazz - $188
Hotel Nouvel - $134 for junior suite
H10 Metropolitan - $180
Acts Atrium Palace - $151
Hotel Colon - $194
Royal Ramblas Hotel - $182
We stopped in a little bed and breakfast in the Born district. A pedestrian area with loads of good bars and Tapas eateries.Excellent area and close to transport. and the guy there sits down with you and will give you amap and make sure you have the best time in Barcelona.
it was Casa Marcelo and it cost us 170euros for 2 nights. And it only cost about 12 euros by taxi to the cruise boat.

ATMs outside port terminal. You will need kunas for things like water and food or ice creams or drinks and bus fare if you want to catch the bus.. The wall is 120 kunas each. Can obviously pay by cc.
We got 400 kunas out and still put the wall on cc.

Hi.
We are arriving in Messina on The Carnival Vista on October 16 (a Sunday ) and were wondering if taxis are available at the port to take us to Mt Etna and then on to Taormina.
We have checked out several tour sharing companies but none have vehicles available.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
I was there a couple of weeks ago. There are taxi drivers at the gate offering tours. We would have taken one if we had another couple to join us. Maybe see if anyone on the boat wants to join you.
Alternatively we paid about 18 euros return for two of us on the train to taormina and then shared a cab up to the town for 15 euros.A lot cheaper than the cruiseline was offering!!

Barcelona is a fantastic city, Im not arty or into museums much, but I would suggest getting the hop on hop off bus and do exactly that. We stopped in the old Born district in a B and B ( Casa Marcelo) good value with plenty of bars and Tapas around at reasonable prices and good transport links
