  1. This is an interesting discussion. While every state's labor laws are somewhat different, most allow hotels & restaurants to collect 'service charges' which are not gratuities and are not necessarily directly paid out to the staff. If you hold a banquet read the contract fine print carefully and it will normally describe how any service charge and/or gratuity is collected, taxed and then retained by the operation or paid out directly to service staff.

The cruise line hotel service charge is no different; it is collected as a way to pay the service staff payroll and not as a way to reward the staff.

We always tip cash to our cabin stewards upon boarding and it's "amazing" how helpful they are to us for the entire cruise. We also like to find a good server in the Lido Cafe early on, provide a cash tip at the start and then enjoy his/her extra attention!

  2. We were in AFT 7143 on the Nieuw Amsterdam two years ago and loved it. No motion or vibrations at all, except slightly when maneuvering for docking.

The room and veranda were definitely larger than a comparable non-aft veranda room.

We are off to Alaska on the Westerdam in July and have AFT 7147 booked; can't wait!
