  1. I have been caught with using cheap cards. Not worth it when you lose the photo's on them. Now I buy Sandisk or Lexar brands. Very reliable.

The other tip is not to delete images from cards, either in the camera or when connected to the computer. After you have used the camera and safely downloaded the images (and backed up) then format the card in the camera. This makes cards a lot more reliable than deleting images.

I too have been caught by card failure during an air show. On the 5D3 I shoot RAW on CF and in Jpeg on the SD, certainly at events. I also have one main card of say 16GB of each in the slots first and then a multitude of 8GB ones changed over as needed. It's also a very valid point made about deleting shots from the card in the camera. I made the mistake of reviewing them from the histogram and the review screen and then deleting the ones that were poor, in order to save card space and ended up with a few problems. The above is good advice, thanks!

    It's mainly Sandisk I use.

  2. Thanks all for the replies. I had a re-think since my last post, I did question that you can't use what you didn't bring, which has been pointed out. Some valid points about leaving gear in the cabin. This gave me other ideas..

5D3 un-gripped, 16-35 F4, 24-70 F4 and a 70-200 F4 (instead of the f2.8). Smaller backpack and a compact carbon travel tripod (which will fit in the case for travel). The small pack isn't too bad at all for weight, on my back , and, will fit in the aircraft overhead lockers as cabin luggage. (Tempted to add the 8-15 F4 too, we'll see ::eek:-))

    Thanks all for the assistance.

  3. Where are you headed? What do you most like to capture, enjoy, experience? On location, the needs for lenses in St. Petersburg/Russia versus the Caribbean, as an example, are two different worlds. Doing wildlife, nature versus beaches versus museums/culture, etc., etc.?? Lots of variables??!! Happy to share more after learning added info from you.

    THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

    Hi Terry,

Very much an amateur photographer with the 5D3 being my dslr.

We're heading to Singapore for a few days beforehand and then join ship on Gems of Indonesia cruise. (3 days in Bali, Komodo, Penang, KL and Phang Nya in Thailand + sea time in between.)

Several excursions planned, mainly enjoy street, night and landscape photography but include animal and 'cultural' photography as it's all a new adventure being the first trip to these areas.

    Thanks

    Dave

  4. First cruise so i'm not sure what to expect in terms of photography time on excursions and what photo opportunities will exist for landscape, night, walkabout and street on excursions. I have a few days either side ashore beforehand. Camera is a Canon 5D3, I thought my 24-70 F4 would suffice but I am beginning to wonder whether the 16-35 F4 should go. The 70-200 F2.8 is a very heavy lens so I question with hand luggage weight restrictions whether that too would be needed. My only other option is a 24-105 F4 (borrowed) or my original cropped kit of a 550D with a EF-S 18-135mm APS-C.

    Any suggestions please?
