  1. I see your concern but at 18 and 20 is it your decision? The 16 year old absolutely your call. I am 38 and I went to Disney on my own w friends at 18. I also went to Bahamas at 18 w friends and a friends mom and made a risky choice that could have gotten me killed because the friends mom was treating us like children and we decided to rebel. My point is while I 110% understand your concern just be careful with the words you choose when talking to them about the decision. I was the girl who always listened and no one would ever think would ever sneak off. Yet I did just to prove I could.

  2. I would worry about myself and leave her to deal with it on her own. If she misses the ship then its a lesson learned the hard way. I hate dealing with people like that. DH and I are the opposite. We plan and arrive early for everything. Its painful when we host parties or even go to them. When we attend parties we have to force ourselves to be alittle late because we are always the only ones there for the first hour. We host holidays and our family knows that if they are not here by 2 we are not holding up dinner!

Anyways mentally prepare to be a solo cruiser as your back up plan just in case but let her worry about herself. If she misses the ship then she deserves it!

  3. I have a checking account and savings account at the bank. I can transfer money from one to the other and my funds are available instantly. My thought is this. It appears that the OP does not have a savings account to cover his on board spending/holds. My advice would be to put money in a savings account instead of cruising 47 nights and going on a jewelry shopping spree. I always taught my kids to have an emergency fund. My oldest son had an issue with his septic tank shortly after he bought his home (at 22 years old). It was no problem for him to pay the $1,000 bill. He had it in his emergency fund. He has also never been on a cruise. My advice to the OP is to open up a savings account and not go on any more cruises until you have at least 3 months salary in the account. And yes.... Go return the jewelry.

I think you are being judgemental. How do you know he doesn't have money in a different bank not linked to his checking. Its possible he does have a savings account that he needs to go home to access in person. You don't know his situation.

  4. Thats assuming he will get approved for the credit card. Not everyone gets approved

Also it possible the account is overdrawn due to the holds. I stopped using debit cards because i learned the hard way. A few years ago i had enough money in my account to cover what i planned to spend plus enough to cover my mortgage payment that was set to be autopayed and a few other payments i had set up. Halfway through the cruise i decided to log into my bank account to make sure the mortgage payment processed. I was horrified to see my available balance was much less than anticipated. When i went to guest services they explained that their process is to put daily holds on the account for what is charged each day and then at the end of the cruise charge the total amount as one debit. I called my bank from guest services (they allowed me a free call) and my bank confirmed that because the total amount at the end does not match the hold amounts the daily holds would take an additional week to be released as available funds which would cause the payments due to come out for my bills to overdraft So in essence based on the process RC uses w daily holds you do need to have double the amount you plan to spend to prevent over drafting. A solution would be for the cruiseline to process the charges each day so the amounts match the holds but they will not do that. I was lucky and because i caught it early i got guest services to agree to remove the holds and let me convert to a cash account. I used the ATM machine to withdraw money to pay my account down in cash
