  1. Not really anything near the port (aloha tower) best bet if you feel you MUST be near is Waikiki or as previous poster said is Ala Moana area. I believe all would be considered "reasonably safe" which is odd phrasing I must say. There is a large homeless population but you usually don't need to worry about them as much more than a nuisance. Personally I never liked going to Waikiki area because it is VERY touristy. Given a choice I would say stay on windward side near marine base Kaneohe- that's the side that looks like everyone's image of Hawaiian island. Plus that side is where most movies and TV spots except Hawaii 5-0 were filmed that feature Hawaii. Honestly it just depends on what you want to do and see while you are there and what time of the year you are going. I highly recommend Pearl Harbor it is phenomenal. I also recommend renting a car and just driving. You can actually go around the entire island in a day and just stop as you want to see the sites, don't need to pay for tours as this is one place I think just driving on your own is more interesting and economical. BTW I lived on Oahu for five years and visited Kauai and Maui so you know what my Hawaii experience is like.

  2. Had similar experience where delta changed our flight time instead of 3pm it was now 6:15am while it sucks that it's now so early at least we won't miss our connecting flight. We will just end up hanging out at LAX MUCH longer than originally planned. We did get an email notification and the option to reschedule if time didn't work but we stuck with the early flight as it was nonstop vs all others having one or more connections. I wanted to limit connections as we have an international flight that same day with a connection and three flights is enough 4-5 would be ridiculous.

  3. Many businesses post that they do not accept larger than $20 notes.

However, I am glad that you have had success with the $50 notes.

Hopefully, Uncle Les will be spared the hassle, too.:)

Generally, the ones that don't take bills higher than $20 are fast food and that usually only late night. Your average store or restaurant will have no problem taking $50 bill. As for getting change for tips, the buying something small in airport is good, CE is also good option. Don't think need much more advice. Enjoy the trip

  4. Having a packing list is a must, it helps minimize overpacking. Don't pack too early, again this tends to cause you to overpack as you may double pack items. Pack less toiletries, these are bulky and difficult to pack so really think about how much shampoo and conditioner you really need for your trip. Cross packing is a good idea if you have checked bags otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. Use the carry on for items you actually need right away or you would hate to lose, I.e. Jewelry, electronics and at least two days worth of clothes. Try solid sunscreen as an option, easier to pack without worrying about liquids. Mix and match clothing is a must this allows you outfit options without overpacking. unless you are doing an active adventure type vacation where you know you're going to sweat and get dirty daily this should work. Shoes will be the bulkiest so consider them carefully, what do you really need...I'd say one pairs of walking/hiking around pair, one pair sandals/flip flop and maybe one pair that can be used as a dressier pair. Honestly, packing is very personal and you do you. If you consider nothing else plan your outfits and make a list. Having that checklist that you check off as you pack will help de-stress the process...I do also recommend packing an extra bag, think soft tote bag type, for souvenirs and gifts

  5. Not sure if someone sitting down but holding a chair for someone in their party really counts as chair hog. You have no idea what may have delayed the "missing" person (I.e. Bathroom, elevator, sick, changing, whatever). In that situation I don't consider it rude or disrespectful to other passengers. Now if it's one person holding a whole row...this might be a bit different but I'm torn. Is it just smart planning to have one person from the party grab seats while the rest come a bit later or should they wait for the entire party then possible be separated and unable to enjoy their time together? I think I get more upset at the ones that drop their stuff on chairs to hold them all day yet really only use the chairs once or very few times. That is more a chair hog. While I don't discount anyone feeling slighted over an open seat being held with no one in it yet, consider as I mentioned that you don't know if that person just stepped away or is just slower getting to the seat than their partner in "crime" Me I'll just find another seat, stand or leave, not worth getting upset over. although if after 40 min I notice no one shows up I would end up irritated too and I might just sit down anyway and offer to leave when/if the other person arrives.

  6. The fake lashes are very "on-trend" right now even for everyday wear. There are also more folks going for lash extensions. Most do look like falsies but some are more "natural" as for deciding to wear on a cruise or vacation. Not necessary really, if you like them sure go ahead but you won't stand out without them so no worries. Honestly, most people tend to tone down the makeup on vacation so just wear what is comfortable for you and makes you feel beautiful.

  7. Yep, common wish it wasn't so as it would be easier to budget but hey I guess from a purely business standpoint it makes sense to increase price on ships/itineraries where customers will "willingly" pay more. I would assume rci has a database that is used to analyze buying trends and costs and that is what is used to determine pricing. It may feel arbitrary to the average person but I can guarantee numbers were crunched including monetary impact of negative customer response.

  8. Change the US rules to the rest of the World's Rules and don't refund deposits for cancelled bookings.

    That'll stop it soon enough!

Lol well I guess if folks are being shady then maybe so. However, I think it more likely that either the person changed their mind or as one poster commented that travel agencies released unsold bookings. I don't think it's a conspiracy to hold "great" cabins just smart folks trying to have options. As someone that has had to cancel two bookings (much to my upset) I certainly didn't do it (book early) in an attempt to prevent others from booking. It was just that I liked the price, cabin and itinerary so booked then circumstances changed and I had to cancel. I like the option of getting my deposit returned if I'm unable to go. I would imagine that since the deposit is so large it will always be refundable up until final cutoff date. Usually nonrefundable deposits are smaller. I also think the bigger impact of nonrefundable deposits on the cruise industry is the likelihood that a large percentage of " average" people will not book early at all because as we all know stuff happens. Btw the "rest of the world rules" comment is inaccurate as I've booked all over the world and only a handful had nonrefundable deposits and those usually only because booking was discounted.

  9. Sorrento was my favorite city when I lived in Naples area. I adored just walking around. There is a wonderful restaurant in the middle of the area, can't remember name. Sorrento is known for wood inlay so if you get a chance pick up some of their beautiful pieces. Also they have a few limoncello "factories" (read small store) that serve limoncello and lemon chocolates. You will also see some of the biggest lemons in your life...some are basketball size. Pompeii is interesting and huge. Sometimes you get lucky and local artist will be there and you can pick up a small fresco copied from the walls. Not sure you could hit both in one day as one person suggested unless you felt like rushing. Naples itself is also a neat city with some wonderful areas downtown that are amazing. Just look past the dirty and you can really enjoy the ambience, macchiatos and pizza(from Brandi's of course). As for the lock down advice...I just recommend wallet in front pocket and just be aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets are around but I will say four years living there and I never got pick pocketed and I definitely don't look like a local. The phone advice is good, don't ever leave it lying around same with purse or backpack. Honestly if you could get away without a bag/purse that's best.

  10. So far my looking back has been a good thing as everything I booked has gone up in price. I will not look again as I get closer because I already got my feel good once and I don't need to see a sale last minute. Besides I'm pretty sure I got a good if not great deal. As one poster said if you felt OK with the price you pay initially then just be happy. Now the last four months til my cruise just need to hurry

  11. I'm curious now about the comment about ATM card...it's a debit card not an "atm" card so has the visa logo and I can use it that way, still hits my bank account just takes longer if rung up that way versus as debit. Can anyone tell me if this would be an issue in Australia? Or would I always need to use as cc vs debit. Just curious. Btw, I would NEVER use my cc for cash as fees are ridiculous, but thanks for the concern. I appreciate the lesson in the diff between chip and pin and chip and signature, I wasn't aware there was a difference it the chips but hey you learn something every day [emoji57]. It is curious though that the US banks/merchants etc choose signature vs pin as pin seems more secure. I'm sure it is $$$ related. Regardless I'm prepared either way, I'll have enough cash available in account to go that route if cc not an option. Maybe that would be better to control impulse purchases ...I do like to spend on vacation, lol
