  1. We have not visited Western Australia yet.

    Heard of all the destinations

It will happen when we have finished our overseas travels

Thank you, and do enjoy WA when you get here.

Dispute sorted more or less ... no one place that much better known than another.

    :)

  2. Heard of all of them. Been to all of them. Lived in some of them.

Would be more logical to name lesser known locations like Kellerberrin or Wyalkatchem or Wongan Hills or Paraburdoo if you really wanted to test folks !

:) Thank you, but I wasn't after testing folks, just trying to settle a minor dispute between inhabitants of two of those named

Thanks to everyone who responded; it came out a dead heat! :D So they really have no need to dispute the point.

  3. I've also posted this in the Australian and NZ ports of call, but would like more responses.

I am curious ... which of these places have people heard of?

    Albany

    Geraldton

    Busselton

    Margaret River

    and

    Broome

    ?

I would love lots of responses. You don't need to KNOW about the places, just have heard (or read) about them.

Many thanks to all who respond.

  4. The ship will moor in Geographe Bay and tenders will bring passengers to the Busselton Jetty. Margaret River is another fifty kilometres away and ten km inland.

There are generally tours which you can book on the ship. They may include a visit to the lighthouse, to Dunsborough, the Chocolate Factory, cheese factories and various wineries.

The underwater observatory beneath the Busselton Jetty is well worth a visit; you can either walk out to it or go via the jetty train.

And as mentioned the museum in town is a fascinating place.

Also St Mary's, a delightful old stone church in the town.

Markets ... could well be set up for the ship's visit.

Lots of little cafes and eateries in Busselton itself and you can walk everywhere.

Enjoy, it's a beautiful area and weather should be fine by then.

  5. They do have stuff, but it was limited. My advice would be head to the $2 shops beforehand and pay their prices, rather than the mark up they had.

I second this idea ... saw a limited amount of stuff for sale on board, at inflated prices. The $2 or op shops are a way better idea. Enjoy your cruise. :)

  6. We were on the Eden for an eight night cruise in May. Food was satisfactory. Most breakfasts we had in the Pantry except for when we went ashore on excursions. Pantry had a wide variety and you could go back for seconds if you wanted.

We didn't eat at Angelo's or Dragon Lady so I can't comment on them.

Most lunchtimes we ate in The Waterfront and every night. Food was generally very nice. I have coeliac disease and require GF food, so every night I ordered the next day's lunch and dinner and must say how very efficient and kind Michelle (in The Waterfront) was. She always ensured I had the menu to order whatever I wanted.

A couple of times the food in the Pantry was not hot enough, but on the whole it was fine. Staff were always happy and obliging. When I asked about GF toast they got it especially for me.

  7. This is from the email we received before the May/June cruise:

' Due to Western Australian gambling legislation, the onboard casino and bingo cannot operate on domestic cruises. Therefore the casino will be closed for the duration of your cruise. '

And it was. Maybe the regulations have changed since then. But it's my understanding it's on domestic cruises that the casino is closed. There was no mention in the email re a 12 km (or miles) limit.

The duty free opened but as was said, not for alcohol or tobacco.

  8. Yes, the law was recently changed so that casinos can operate whilst at sea, not whilst in port or anchorage.

Must have been a very recent change; we were on the Pacific Eden in May/June and the casino was shut for the duration.

And please note this cruise does NOT go to Margaret River. The tenders bring passengers to the BUSSELTON Jetty. It's another 50 km to Margaret River, which is about 10 kms inland from the ocean. You can go to MR on one of the organised tours or if you hire a car.

I hope you enjoy your cruise to Busselton.

  9. Yes, we're doing the 8 night cruise from Freo later this month and received an email including the following info:

'Due to Western Australian gambling legislation, the onboard casino and bingo cannot operate on domestic cruises. Therefore the casino will be closed for the duration of your cruise.'

I don't think the duty free shop operates unless the ship goes to another country.

Sorry not to have been of more help, and hope you enjoy your cruise.

    :)

  10. There is no trout in Fremantle but you possibly could do river fishing for Salmon.

Margaret river is not a port as such but has great wines and surfing. I presume the port will be Busselton.

This is true. Cruise ships moor in Geographe Bay and passengers are transferred ashore via the Busselton Jetty. It's then another 50 km to Margaret River. You CAN fish from the Busselton jetty, but I don't know anything about hiring equipment. Or you could take a trip to the Underwater Observatory and just look at the fish.

And no, you can't go fishing in Margaret River.

I hope you enjoy your cruise. :)

  11. This link will show you some of the tours available.

The ship moors in Geographe Bay and tenders bring you to the Busselton Jetty. It's then 50 km to Margaret River and I don't think there's a coach just taking people there and back from the jetty, although there are organised tours.

You can go snorkelling from the jetty; there are brilliant corals on the pylons which have become an artificial reef. There is also an underwater observatory. The water's a bit cold atm. You can go swimming from the beach or the jetty.

The Visitor Centre just onshore from the Busselton Jetty will be open and they may be able to give you further information there re bike riding etc.

If you're interested in local history, the old Butter Factory Museum is worth seeing and is a short walk from the jetty.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Busselton!

  12. Can't see any problem as long as you declare it. I'm also coeliac and when I travelled on Princess the head waiter brought the next night's menu round to me every night so I could say what I wanted. They're very obliging for people with special dietary needs.

btw, I find Coles have a very good range of GF stuff, as do Woolworths. But I recommend a suburban supermarket rather than the inner city shops. And IGA carry a (small) range of GF sweets, as do some chemists.

    Enjoy your trip. :)

  13. Our first time on a cruise ship. My wife normally takes a box fan wherever we go to drown out the noise of my snoring :) Trying to find ideas to make a little white noise for her. I won't use any snore relief stuff so that won't work. Let me hear them. Thanks.

Well, if you "won't" (as opposed to "can't") use any snore relief stuff, invest in a good quality pair of earplugs for your wife. I'd also suggest a trip to your doctor to see if, as someone else suggested, there is some underlying cause for the snoring. It can be s symptom of something more serious.

Or you could reward your wife for her suffering by staying home and letting her have a snore-free holiday! :)

  14. There's a shuttle bus in Geraldton. The Sydney Memorial is certainly worth looking at, and a guided tour, although it gives you extra info etc, is not essential. It is uphill, be warned if you try to walk it. I recommend the bus. You will get a great view of the town from the memorial site.

There's a very pleasant walk along the beachfront to the Marina and the Geraldton Museum. From there you can walk to the highway and explore the old Geraldton Gaol, a Heritage site and also full of local craft works.

The trip to the old settlement at Greenough is imo expensive. You might be better off to hire a car and rive yourself. The local tourist bureau is close to where the tenders pull in.

As for Margaret River .... the ship moors in Geographe Bay near the Busselton jetty and you come ashore by tender. There is a little train that will take you to the sea end of the jetty and the Underwater Observatory is worth seeing. The jetty is 1800 metres long and a pleasant walk in nice weather. There are many local volunteers giving out info and hints when ships come in.

Busselton is a pretty town with a Museum down beside the river, and plenty of shopping within walking distance of the jetty. I don't know anything about the bus tours, sorry. Margaret River is 50 kms away. :)

We're going on the 8 night cruise later in May and have booked excursions ashore in Broome and Exmouth, places we have never been to.

  15. Hmmm ... leave the phone at home and consider it the ideal time to cure her of her obsession. Contrary to what your daughter may believe, lack of 24/7 contact with her friends is unlikely to prove fatal.

OR ... let her take it, do what she wants AND PAY THE BILL. Herself. With NO help from you.

But, your daughter, ultimately your choice. (Note: YOURS, not hers, unless she's paying her own way.)
