  1. Well, just for yucks and giggles I tried doing the edit with Internet Explorer (I was using Chrome when I checked in the first time) and there big as life was the screen just like PCWalton had posted.  Clicked on the option for cash and finished the check-in for myself and my wife.  So basically their website is coded to IE and won't handle cross-browser issues.  As a software consultant I'm kind of shocked at their IT people, that's a huge no-no these days.

  2. Ok, I finally couldn't take it any more and called RCI.  According to the rep I spoke to, there has been a very recent update to the app and the website software that now requires credit card information to complete the online check-in (thus the wording at the top of the page that says guests who don't complete the credit card info must check in at the port).  She was not aware of it and had to contact her support team to find out why I wasn't getting that option.  Cash accounts have to be set up at the pier, she can't even make the change on her end any more.  So apparently now if you want to check in online you have to give them credit card info.

Not sure if the RCI call-in center is like the Princess call-in center, but with Princess you could call 5 times get 5 different reps and 5 different answers.  For what it's worth it didn't sound like I got the usual offshore call-in center this time.

Sure, not a big deal for most, but some don't want to use credit cards for the onboard account and it's hard to believe they would change this to make it a requiremement.

I agree and I'm one of them.  It's just waaayyyyyy too easy to hand over that SeaPass card if it's attached to a credit card.  With virtually everything paid for in advance I don't see the need to have anything other than a cash account for incidentals, and if (god forbid 🙂 ) we do make a larger purchase on board I will just go to Guest Services and pay for it right then.

I believe that there was a small box that you had to select for the cash account.  Was this there?

Not that I saw, and I specifically looked for something like that.  I suppose it's possible I missed it but I did scroll all up and down the entire screen and looked.  The other strange thing was that it also wouldn't let me continue unless I put in separate credit card info for my wife, even though my credit card info that I had just entered defaulted to her.  I just repeated the same card info and it was fine with that, but seemed unnecessary.

Perhaps this is something new, but I've never been forced to give a credit card number in order to complete check-in.

No big deal if I can make the change to a cash account once I get there, I just wanted to make sure I hadn't done something wrong that I should call in to correct.

Were you checking in via the mobile app or on a computer?  I’ve heard that the app has a lot more restrictions.

I have the app but I used my computer to check in.  I hate typing on my iPhone....big thumbs 🙂  The SetSail passes come up fine on the app now that check-in is completed.

Was this the version that wanted the full credit card number or just the last 4 digits?

It wanted all of it...name, number, expiration date.  I figured there would be a place to opt for a cash account, but nope.  It was either credit card or no online check-in

...I've always been able to avoid giving a credit card number, don't know what is going on there........

I tried just clicking continue without putting in the credit card info but I got the red naughty text saying I had to check in at the port if I didn't give it up and couldn't go any further.

  9. Hi all, sorry for what are probably dumb newbie questions but this is only my second RCI cruise and the first was quite a while ago, so I don't remember.  Online check-in just opened up for my Allure cruise and I was able to complete it, but have 2 questions:

    • I wanted to have a cash account, but online check-in would not let me complete the process without entering credit card information.  Is this something I should change when I check in at the port or should I call RCI?
    • Once the online process completed, I was able to print our SetSail passes, but the luggage tags still show as "pending".  Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

    Thanks for your help 🙂

Interesting. I just read all the posts on that roll call as I was interested in what you read that would turn you off from booking that cruise. I didn't read anything alarming.

    This:

"Yes my daughter and niece are both turning 15. a travel agency from Miami arranges everything for us and about 15 other families and their friends."

One or two wouldn't be alarming.  15 is alarming.  Picture a 3-night Carnival weekend cruise out of Miami.

...I remember a few years ago on FOTS we were sailing with the Danny Partridge Fan Club and our whole roll call was concerned they would take over the ship.  They were barely noticed.  We'd see them and their private event around the ship but nothing impacted our holiday....

Much as i hate to admit it, most of us old enough to be or have been a fan of Danny Partridge (or even remember who he was) are long past our days of drunken debauchery.  This group will be a tad younger 🙂

  12. No need to purchase wifi if you only use the RCI app.  I have not used it yet from what I've read here the texting is not as reliable as regular texting on your phone.  If you purchase an internet package and your phone is capable of wifi calling you can connect to the wifi and put your phone in airplane mode, and your texting and calling will work as normal at no additional charge.  Be sure you activate wifi calling before you leave and are still connected to your network, and remember to put your phone in airplane mode once you pull out of port, otherwise your phones will roam off the cell towers on the ship.

  13. I cruised on the Oasis and actually missed sail away because I lost track of time and didn't feel one bit of motion.  By the time we realized what time it was and figured we weren't in port any more, we were several miles away from Port Everglades.  We spent the entire cruise trying to detect motion and it was kind of a running joke of ohhh...I felt something for the entire week! 🙂  Unless you hit a large storm or something similar my guess is you will be fine.

I learned the term Quince on our first and almost last Royal cruise. Empress out of SJ.

FWIW, 15 families doesn't sound like that many on a big ship like Symphony

I agree it may seem like 15 isn't a lot, but I'm Cuban, so trust me when I tell you that when they say family they mean ALL the family....immediate, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends....and most Latin families tend to be on the larger side.  Could be 10, could be 100.  You could be fine, you could also end up with the cabin next to their block of cabins and never get a moment's peace.  They will not be hurting for unlimited drink package sales on that cruise.  Given a choice I wouldn't chance it, but that's just me.

  15. It's beginning to look like the way to go for her is to bring along a box or 2 of her usual teas (Lady Gray and Kombucha) as a backup and see what the complimentary teas are.  If she doesn't like them she can use her own and just ask for hot water.  She's not a specialty coffee or virgin drink drinker, so she wouldn't get the return on the Refreshment Package....kind of expensive for tea and water 🙂

  16. Years ago I did an Alaska inside passage cruise that had Victoria as a port.  We missed it because of high winds, but at no point was the water rough enough for us to feel the difference even with the winds.  As someone else said your entire cruise is in protected waters so you should be fine.  Enjoy your first cruise! 🙂

  17. The DW and I will be on the Allure on Sept. 29th.  I purchased the refreshment package for myself only, because she said she wouldn't take advantage of the offerings included to make it worth the expense (the refreshment package is now $50 more than what I paid for it!).  She only wants access to tea, and she's a bit of a fussy tea drinker, so she needs specialty teas.  When we cruised Princess the coffee card got her punches for fancy coffees but it also included unlimited regular coffee and teas (without punches), and they had a decent selection of teas, so it was a good fit for her.  I'm not quite sure what to do for her on the Allure however.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks! 🙂
