  1. It all depends if you are 1) no weight bearing; 2) partial weight bearing; 3) full weight bearing.

    1) no weight bearing..........I would look at renting an electric scooter or wheel chair to get around. There are a couple of companies that rent them and they are waiting for you onboard. You still will need to let the special needs dept know in advance to have a wheel chair for you to board the ship. specialneedsatsea.com or scootaround.com

    2) partial weight bearing..............I would look at a knee scooter. You can purchase one from Amazon. Depending on what you are looking at doing some come with small wheels and others have large wheels (all terrain). You can also rent one from the above company but the rental would cost you as much as the purchase.

    3) full weight bearing..............you will just need your crutches to get around. You might want to have a wheel chair available to get on the ship.

I am fixing to have my third foot surgery on the same foot. It is scheduled the week after we get off the Freedom. I will be 3-4 months no weight bearing this time. I have a cruise at 7 weeks post op. I have already purchased a wheel chair with the leg extension ($115) and an all terrain knee scooter ($118) so that I can get around when we go on the cruise.

At 10 weeks PO, your incision should be healed so no need to request a bio-hazard bag for the dressing changes to be put in.

Definitely look at getting an Evenup for your other foot. This helps keep you level and prevents back issues from walking uneven.

  2. Will be sailing from NOLA on my next cruise. Have sailed from Miami, NYC, and San Juan previously.

Was really disappointed when we embarked from San Juan that we entered ship by gangway onto I believe deck 2 and not directly onto deck 5/6 so that the first thing you see is the Atrium.

Can anyone tell me onto what deck you embark in NOLA.

IF it helps, we will be sailing on the Getaway.

Our adult children will be sailing with us, our son is a former cast member on DCL, and it will be anti-climatic for his first cruise as a passenger if we board down in the belly of the ship.[emoji14]

This will be the first time this upcoming Nov for a ship the size of the Breakaway to sail from New Orleans. On the Dawn and Star we boarded on Deck 7. The gangway is articulating so it should be able to adjust for boarding on Breakaway and Getaway. Everything I have read says Deck 7 at other ports where embarkation is done which is not going to going to be an Atrium entrance.

  3. What does that have to do with the Breakaway and sailing out of New Orleans?

I think it was in reply to this statement....and even Carnival Vista will all be in Miami vs. Getaway. They were clarifying that the Vista is going to Galveston so wont be in competition with the Getaway.

  4. Skipping a port is not considered trip interruption.

You are correct not fileable under trip interruption. But with Nationwide Choice or Luxury policies, it is port inconvenience if the port is cancelled or you are late 3 or more hours. It pays $250 per person. If the port is cancelled before the ship sails on embarkation day, you would get back $750pp with Choice and $1250pp with the Luxury policy. The rest of the policy is just like normal travel insurance.

  5. Go with the Nationwide as they are the only ones offering port protection that I am aware of. Look at the Luxury policy because of the higher payouts. If the port is cancelled before the cruise, you get $1250pp. If cancelled after the cruise starts or is 3 or more hours late to a port, you get $250pp.

I had to use it in Jan due to missing Grand Cayman. They paid pretty quickly. My friend that just got off the Breeze is getting $2500 back due to Key West being cancelled.

  6. We had a friend that broke her back onboard a ship. They put her off in Antigua. It was $20,000 for the med flight to the "closest US hospital" which was Miami. She lives in Arizona. It was going to cost another $20,000 to get her home. We had to raise $10k through a gofund me as the trip insurance only covered $30k. So read the policies careful as to the amount of the med flight and where they are willing to take you to.

Another policy out there is Nationwide Choice. They are the only ones that I am aware of that gives you port protection. If the port is cancelled before the sailing, you get $750pp. If cancelled after you sail or there is a 3 or more hour delay, you get $200pp. The rest of the policy is the same as other travel insurance.

  7. I was on the Glory two weeks after they had missed two ports. They almost had a riot onboard with folks not understanding missed ports. But I did learn something new because of it. Nationwide offers a port guarantee with their travel insurance. If they announce a port will be missed before you sail, you get back $500-$750pp depending on the policy you get. If announced after you sail, you get back $100-200pp depending on the policy.

Since we were doing a B2B, I was able to insure the two weeks for $144. And we ending up missing Grand Cayman. I had the Universal policy which paid $100pp. In the future, I will get the Choice policy.

So to the point at hand, if folks would have had the Choice policy for this sailing, they would have gotten back $750pp. (plus all that the cruiseline is offering).

  8. Not to be a downer...but ....you will have muster drill at 4:00, then pull away (you do want to be at the FRONT of the ship to watch it make the 360 degree turn)...best place to watch is from the same place, or on an upper deck.

But, it will dark by 6:30, so not much else to see.

You are on a River Cruise until the ship reaches the mouth of the Mississippi River, around midnight.

Probably the most interesting thing to see, is when the ship reaches the mouth (coming and going) is to see how the small land on the south of the ship gets smaller and smaller until it disappears. But dont expect to see much.

From there on you can see the lights of the oil derrecks.

Jimmy, 360 would put you going back upriver....a complete circle. :D I couldnt resist when I knew you meant 180 degrees.

Here is a photo I took of a rare daylight exit to the Gulf. We left New Orleans at 1am on the Triumph.

  9. I didnt like the changes to the ship. The comedy club is way too small. It is bad when people sitting on the sides have to watch a tv screen to see the comedian. The front show lounge/dance club is a night mare for the crew. Having to put chairs out and then take them up when they switch to the dance club. When you are at the show, there is no place to put your drinks.

It has been our least favorite ship.

  10. Looking at booking an August 2017 cruise for my daughters 16th birthday.

One of the cabins (inside stateroom for three).

Question I have can I book that cabin and just not finalize the names of two of the three passengers?

    Not sure how that works.

Thanks for any info you can give.

Yes, the other two names will show up as TBA (to be announced). You still have to pay the deposits on the other two, but if you wait until tomorrow there will be $49pp and $98pp deposit sales.

  11. Just wondering how check in times work! If I schedule a 10am check in time and I arrive at 11am, do they push us back for being "late". Is the check in time strict? Also do the check in times get limited closer to sail date? Do the times start getting taken and your left with late in the afternoon check in? How does this work? Thanks in advance!

You can always arrive later than the check-in time, just not before it. If you arrive before the scheduled time, they will prevent you from entering the terminal. The times are capacity controlled as to spread out the boarding process.

  12. I am after final payment on my Jan 24 sailing on the Dawn. We have an oceanview. My oldest daughter is no longer going with us. We had the UBP which gave 1st/2nd the adult beverage package and the 3rd/4th the soda package.

NCL was able to switch my daughter with her cousin at no charge. I was expecting a $50 name change fee. We also switched it around so that me and the 21 year old cousin has the adult bev package and my wife and youngest daughter has the soda package.

  13. It's ultimate dining package and ultimate beverage package. I just think it's better for us to pay for the specialty dining out of or package and get the free unlimited drink on board :)

That is what we are doing also. It was a no brainer to get the UBP as we already get dinner for two with a bottle of wine twice on the sailing being Platinum.

  14. Only flights left from Nashville land at 230. Can we make it to the ship in time?

The ship's manifest has to be submitted at 3pm for the 4pm sailaway. Once submitted they cannot add anyone to it even though the ship is still there. There is no way you will make it as it will take about 25 or so minutes to get to the port not to mention getting your luggage. Personally I never travel by air on the day of a cruise.
