  1. I don't know what your budget is like. My parents, boyfriend and I planned our Alaska cruise for this may. We're on the Carnival Legend, so the cheapest ship and have the cheeapest rooms. We didn't really care how we got there, we just knew we wanted to cruise there.

This varies person to person though. Our philosophy is that all we do on the ship is sleep and eat, so we didn't care to spend a lot.

This left us a nice budget for excursions. My bf and I are 21 and 20, so we're doing a lot of things different from my parents. We both figured around 500-700 each for excursions and have already picked ours:

Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier combo in Juneau -$180pp

Dog Sledding & Mushing Camp in Skagway - $130pp

Chilkoot Horseback Riding in Skagway - $160pp

And we're debating on Ziplining in Ketchikan, which varies in price depending on which one you pick from $80-200pp.

Whale watching, I think, is a must based on all the reading up I did on here. Otherwise as you can tell, I am a huge animal lover. I work with dogs and going 9+ days without a dog interaction would kill me, hence the dog sledding excursion. :P However, my parents are doing totally different stuff - they prefer the fishing tours and walking around the cities we stop in rather than doing a bunch of excursions. YMMV.

  2. It seems to me that if you bring what you would for upstate New York in the Spring you'll be fine. I'm sure you'd agree that Spring weather can be anything, so layers, warm stuff, stuff for warm days, and rain gear. We've seen it be 75 degrees in Juneau in May. As everybody else said, layers.

75 degrees? Wow! I am prepared for cooler temps but figured Alaska was a bit cooler than NY lol. My birthday is May 7th and it almost always is rainy and cold around then :p

  3. Title says it! I've been searching online but can't seem to find straight answers.

I live in upstate NY so I have gear for all seasons.

Going to Alaska May 16th, what, clothing wise, should I be bringing?

I am going to start shopping now if I need anything, because of after-season winter sales, which is why i'm asking so early :p

  4. It is very common to see humpback tails. Very rare not to. They are a buoyant whale that usually needs to fluke up to dive.

The accurate information for what you can expect with Juneau whale watches are humpbacks- blows, backs and tails. Sea lions and eagles are also common sightings.

    Perfect, just what I want!

I've done a bit of studying humpbacks this year (i'm an animal behavior student) and I'm really looking forward to the wildlife on this trip so i'm happy to hear they're common sightings.

  5. Hey everyone! My parents, boyfriend and I will be setting sail on the Carnival Legend in May of this year!

    We'll be stopping in Juneau (2pm-11pm), Skagway(7am-9pm), and Ketchikan(7am-1pm).

What are the best tours/excursions in these places relating to animals/wildlife? Marine life especially :)
