  1. Its Interesting some of the replies. First off I'm a Veteran and not scared. Secondly when we booked the cruise there was no State of emergency 10 miles from where we will dock. Look it up Falmouth is 10 miles from the parish that's in a state of emergency. Thirdly I would not book a cruise that docks in the southside of Chicago or the eastside of Detroit or Compton ca. Those comments are inane. I would think a company as large as NCL would seriously consider changing to keep up with "current events". Anyone not sailing to Falmouth in the near future has no dog in the fight. The state of emergency is until at least Feb 15th we are do to dock the 13th. I appreciate the well wishing comments Not the critical ones that are not sailing there. If we go we will do the gated area only we have a group that includes elderly and small children

The same level warning was in effect when I went there with my 9 year old daughter a few months back. Whenever I'm in unfamiliar territory, I research and find a driver (of course it's much more costly than any tour but can't really put a price on safety) who knows the area, knows what I want to do and will keep me out of the bad areas which are located in most towns across the world. Having said that, I'm street savvy, always aware of my surroundings and definitely leave all my jewelry onboard. The gated tourist area in Falmouth is of the largest I've ever seen so you'll be safe and entertained staying within the fences if that's what you decide.

  2. The red at our dinner was very nice. A Black Opal Shiraz from Australia.

I should also note a couple of other things that I disliked.

I metioned the food being lukewarm as a complaint. The calamari , I thought, were soggy. I do like calamari, and I ate them, but they were nothing to write home about. Maybe they lost their crispiness in the attempt to keep them warm. Thinking about it, I'm not sure fried calamari should be served on 7 course meal.

The other complaint we had is that we were seated at one end of the table next to a mother and twelve year old child. This is not an evening to bring children. It should be excusively for adults. Needles to say we had no one to talk to but the child's mother. And of couse, half way thru the meal, the kid was over the dinner and placing his head on the table and falling asleep. It would have been more enoyable having other people our age to converse with. Other than the twelve year old, all the other couples were of similar age.

They had a CT the night before ours and we noticed it was all elderly couples. So Carnival did make an attempt to form groupings of similar age. kudos for that.

I have attended several CT's on many different ships/cruise lines and always bring my young daughter. Admittedly, she's an adventurous eater with a great palate and is quite mature. I have always found that the chefs love having her there and I've never run into any other dining guests who have been opposed to her presence at the table. I think it's a wonderful time to showcase the conversational skills and table manners we have taught her over the years.

  3. I would never insult a service professional by "tipping" them on the first day to give me good service. I treat them like I know they will give me prompt and satisfactory service and will reap the rewards accordingly. 99% of the time I am not disappointed.

Personally, I think doing what the OP suggested just makes you look like a tacky tourist who has little experience traveling or dealing with customer service professionals. In other words, disrespectful.

As someone else said though, to each their own.

I disagree that tipping on the front-end is construed as an insult to a service professional. As a very seasoned traveler, I prefer exceptional service over "satisfactory" service any day of the week. As such, I always give a 20 to my room steward upon our first meeting when I request more/better pillows, a plush robe, ice at both am/pm service, and any other little extra requests I may have. I also give various other staff members a generous tip on day one- ensures a better table at dinner, a better pour at the bar, etc.

If you'd like to call it a bribe, well, that's your prerogative. I'll sit back comfortably in my plush robe, stiff drink in hand, feeling happy on the inside knowing I scratched their backs and in return, they scratched mine;-)

  4. I'm going to scan them this weekend. Last time I tried to scan daily schedules the text was too small to read, but my old scanner was from 2007. Hopefully my brand new one will do a better job. If not, I can type some of it out to give you an idea of activities, entertainment and times.

This would be so great. And thank you again- the Patters for this cruise are nowhere to be found so I know you'll be helping a bunch of people.

  5. I got back from my last cruise, a five day trip to Cabo out of Los Angeles, way back in April. I had thought about doing a review back then but realized I hadn't taken many pictures of the ship. I also had another trip planned for the end of May so I was busy planning for that. My indecision led to no decision and no review. However, I have had more than a few people ask me if I had done a review of the trip, so I put together a shorter informational piece with some pictures, menus, and food temptations. (Also, when I'm researching a trip or cruise, I love reading everything I can, no matter how old or short). Last night I found the Patters from the cruise and I have a new scanner so I'll also try to get those on here as well.

Thank you SO much! Taking this cruise in February and dying to see the Patters!

  6. For me, by night there's nothing better than to leave the door open and have the fresh air come in and the sounds of the ocean lul me to sleep. During the day, my daughter will paint/draw out there and I'll usually join her with an adult beverage:) There have been two times we didn't get a balcony out of more than a dozen cruises we've sailed and have missed it both times!

  7. Yes, the ship stays at anchor in the port. Tenders run until Midnight or 1am (can't remember the exact time) and resume early (5 or 6am) in the morning.

    Yes, MUTS will have movies.

As I remember regarding the casino, the ship is in port. Casino and shops are closed.

Which one are you on? I'm on the Ruby 2/16/18 overnight. :)

Hi Pam... I'm sailing on that cruise as well. Totally forgot about the in port shops/casino closing rule!

  8. The murder statute in the Federal System is much different than in the state system. There is not much room for "plea Bargain" sentence is always harsh..................... (no parole etc.) If it happens in the special maritime district there is even less room. Its an interesting discussion but moot.

The "plea bargain" will essentialy break down to how much time he will serve NORTH of 18 years for a guilty plea (and thats hard time) not the charges themselves. Federal sentencing is so harsh, 93% of federal cases plead out

By contrast in State Court a "life sentence" can be as little as 12 years.[ /quote]

What state considers 12 years as a life sentence.....:confused:

States with insanely overcrowded jails. Welcome to California.

A true injustice to the victims.

  9. I just returned from an RCI Caribbean cruise and when I asked my steward (on day 2) what he wanted me to do with our morning breakfast dishes he asked me to place them outside or on the balcony... Whichever I preferred. The first day I did not do that and when we returned in the afternoon he had only removed dishes I had put trash on, leaving behind a plate with muffins and a 3/4 finished milk. I think it's difficult for them to know whether you'd like to keep certain items.

I do like the idea of calling room service to pick them up and will do so on my next Princess cruise in February.

  10. Wondering if anyone has stayed here before? If so, any details would be great. Found it on VRBO.

Answering my own question now that our two day stay is almost up in the morning. Great spot and would highly recommend for a couple or small family- one bed and a couch. Rosa (hostess) lives in the main house (a beautiful pink Victorian) and is so helpful answering any questions you may have. She even offered to drive us to the Strand because it was too hot to walk! This place is clean and adorable and close to everything!

  11. I'm thinking of going with an AirBnB for me and my 2 sons when we are in Galveston this October for two pre cruise nights. Does anyone have one they would recommend? I'd like to be within walking distance from the shops, pier, etc. Thank you so much in advance!

At a VRBO- the Mermaid Cottage now. It's great though only a studio. One king bed and a couch.
