  1. We did this trip in January flying with American from Manchester to Philadelphia and on to San Juan. It was about 8 and a half hours to Philadelphia with approximately a 4 hour lay over before the connecting flight which is another 4 hours to San Juan. There was a slight delay at Philadelphia. American immigration was not a problem and yes we did have to collect baggage and resubmit which was not an issue because of the lay over time. Viking are not there to help you through this process but it is very straightforward and airport staff were very helpful. We arrived at the ship just after midnight having been travelling for 22 hours from leaving home. We were absolutely exhausted as were our fellow travellers. We would not do it again and would definitely recommend breaking your journey in the US. Some people had flown Heathrow to Miami and had a couple of days in Florida before continuing. We had not wanted to spend time ahead of the cruise in San Juan, but by travelling on the first day we had lost the entire day to travelling with little time to recover, unpack or find our way around the ship before we were out on our walking tour. We knew this would be the case, although we had expected to arrive a couple of hours sooner than we did and had not fully appreciated just how tired we would be. Consider your options carefully.

  2. We were here on 28th January also and have to agree with Miss Picante and Sammiedawg.

The Fort was of some interest but that was about it. The sidewalks were in a bad state and dangerous in parts for a walking tour. There were broken manhole covers, lumps of concrete, a random satellite dish which hadn't been picked up, power cables hanging loose. We passed many derelict and destroyed properties. All very sad to see. Viking probably needed a port to moor the ship for the day but St Croix was no substitute for Tortola and really shouldn't have been a destination

The ship was moored next to the Carnival Fascination which is being used as a hotel for the aid workers. Unfortunately this ship is also being refurbished. Old upper deck windows were being replaced and the frames cleaned with angle grinders. Work you would expect in a dockyard not a cruise ship jetty. We witnessed this from our cabin and the noise on the deck hardly made for a relaxing time.

  3. Is there anyone going on the West Indies Explorer Cruise between now and January who has had information from Viking regarding changes to itineraries and excursions who can update me on what to expect when I talk to Viking Just before I pay my balance payment in 2 weeks. We are traveling from the UK for the 26th Jan sailing and won't arrive at San Juan until 2300hrs on the first day after a very long trip via mainland USA.

    Thanks

  4. My husband and I are booked on the West Indies Explorer cruise Dec. 6 -16, 2017. Due to the recent hurricane, the itinerary has been changed for this cruise adding two at sea days. A cruise with the same itinerary sailed on Oct.13. We could appreciate hearing about your experiences and comments if you sailed on this cruise.

We are undecided if we should cancel our reservation.

Thanks for the information we look forward to any information you can post as your cruise continues

  5. my wife and due to be on the West Indies explorer cruise late Jan 2018 and we are 3 weeks away from paying the balance that we owe Viking. looking at the internet I am struggling to see how the published excursions can possibly be available given the destruction caused by this years hurricane season. Viking are obviously trying to juggle the needs of the Caribbean communities, their customers and the need to still make a profit. If anyone going on this cruise between now and January has any information from Viking we would love to hear what they are currently saying. We have spoken to Viking directly but they were unable to update us.

  6. Hi we are going on the Caribbean Experience trip in May the price quoted by Viking includes all gratuities so surely no extra tipping required on board for us

  7. Hi we have just booked our first cruise Viking Caribbean Explorer Jan 2018

The sales person has convinced me that as a new cruiser a mid ships cabin on deck 4 would be good in case of motion sickness. I noticed that the cabin number he has allocate is above the Tenders. I asked if the tenders hung out of the ship and would they be visible he said no they were inboard.

I have noticed however from photos they are only partially inboard.

Should I be concerned about limited views

    Thanks
