Is that area exclusive to the Ruby, or is it also on the Crown?
This location used to be designated smokers spot so will be available on each cruise ship.

On Ruby Princess December 2016 I scanned a copy of some of the specials that were on offer. Just to give you an idea.
I save the PDFs on my website so clicking on this link will take you there. Lotus Spa Specials

My vote is for Grand from SF. I just finished that cruise.

Just completed the beautiful 15 day cruise to the Hawaiian Islands. The weather was a little rainy but it was still amazing. The cruise was March 23-April 7 roundtrip from SF onboard the Grand Princess.
I know some fellow passengers would like to review the patters before sailing so here they are:

We just cruised on Ruby in January 2018.
The area has new furniture. They are wicker inspired and the chairs are super comfortable. The curve of the back makes an excellent head support when you fall asleep. We enjoyed most days there. I just found a quick 8 second video I took that shows the area and the chairs. Check it out on youtube: https://youtu.be/NOv-cP-3uNo. Hope that link works!

My guess for your formal nights will be Sunday and Wednesday.
The cruise line tends to choose days for formal nights when you are at sea.
The food in the dining room is awesome. Formal night dining is supposed to be a little better - for example you will get a choice of lobster one formal night. But the dining room food is consistently good (IMHO)
The specialty restaurants serve great food. I try to book a specialty restaurant after I have looked at the dining room menu. If there is nothing really great then I go to a specialty restaurant. That said - the Crown Grill is awesome and priced right.
Also on Ruby you will have
and the. I have created a YouTube video just click on the links.I have been cruising for over 10 years on Princess Cruises and yes the food is just as good :)
On embarkation day they do not serve a lunch in the dining room - only buffet.
Hope that helps.
Enjoy

Correct on the bus.
The star used to mean you are a U.S. Citizen. Is your wife a non-US citizen?
I found this thread from 2009 that speaks to the symbols.

This video is from the Ruby Princess Jan 2018 - New Years Eve cruise.
Regardless of the furniture it is still a fantastic spot.
Good to hear about the Grand and Emerald.
