  1. barbeyg, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this account of your vacation! You have a fantastic way with expression without sensationalizing and I truly love it. I'm so glad I went back to the 2016 Alaska trip reports and found yours.

We leave the end of August 2018 (this year) on NCL's Jewel with a very close, if not exact itinerary as yours. Fortunately, we will have 5 days on land pre-cruise and 2 days afterwards in Vancouver. Our plans for excursions, although not set in stone yet, are nearly identical to yours, so your account has been more helpful to my planning than you can imagine. I just wanted to share my thoughts of appreciation, even though your review was written quite some time back.

Thank you, and enjoy the next journey, whatever it may be!

  2. ksimpso3 I should have addressed my question to you...(Thanks BinaBo!) so I'm going to repost it this way, hoping this is correct.

I noticed in one of your suite photos that there were balloons in your room. Were those something you brought along....or something you got onboard? The reason I ask is because I called NCL to find out if they decorated with balloons onboard POA, and they assured me they do not decorate with balloons. I have a lethal allergy to latex and balloons are the most dangerous things I can go around. I understand anyone can bring their own balloons onboard but would have them in their private rooms.

Just checking ....thanks for any info you can give me.

Hi. Sort of hi-jacking the post, my apologies to original poster, but I wanted to let you know that since we last posted on this thread, my husband and I have sailed on the POA to Hawaii in the Deluxe Owner's suite #12006. It was our anniversary celebration and our room was decorated with balloons upon our arrival. We did not take them onto the ship with us. I do not know if they are latex, but since I have never known of any other type of balloon, I assume they were. Our trip was amazing and I will reviewing it over the next few weeks.

  3. One other thing - since you are on 12, it is a very short walk to the doors leading outside and there is the Key West Bar. From looking at Dailies for a couple days, the hours were 12-6:30. Next closest bar is down one floor just aft of the pools - Ocean Drive and had hours like 9a-7p. Next closest bar is Gold Rush Saloon just a bit aft of the pool deck port side with hours 12 to 11:30.

dexddd, thank you! Seems to be plenty of options all around. I'm not opposed to using that stocked mini fridge either. Even with the charge.

  4. I think I discover at least one new bit of information with every review I read. Thank you, mertziek, we will now consider the bike tour as well as the tubing adventure. I also had no idea there was a stocked bar fridge in this suite. We are staying in 12006 too.

We've never been to Hawaii, booked it through GolfAhoy and doing 4 golf excursions while in ports but will still have time for a few other tours.

I wonder if you could help by recommending your "not-to-miss" tours in Oahu, Hilo, Kona, and Kauai? I know now you like the sunrise bike tour and the tubing tour but since you've visited Hawaii several times, maybe you have a different opinion about tours when it comes to first-timers?

    Thanks a bunch!

  5. Can suite guests purchase a bottle of liquor for the cabin? Through room service? I know the liquor laws are quirky and I certainly haven't figured them out yet. Any info?

    Thanks!

I typed "POA liquor" in to search box here on Cruise Critic and a several threads came up. Not all the info seems accurate (or consistent!) I think those who sail with NCL regularly, but who have never been on the POA ship, attempt to answer questions based on their NCL experience. In reality, the POA has very different rules in place than all other NCL ships, especially regarding liquor.

I have never cruised NCL however, since we are cruising on the POA in August, celebrating our 30th anniversary, enjoy our evening cocktails, and are staying in a Deluxe Owner's Suite, I have concerned myself with finding answers to appease my drunken intentions while onboard.

Unfortunately, the answer appears to be "No" to your question. Due to the Hawaiian laws, (which I have not studied so I'm taking others' word for it) no "bar set-ups" are allowed anywhere on the ship except behind the public area bars. The only hard liquor to be had is in the form of a mixed drink which would be made by a bartender. I don't see why you couldn't order pre-made mixed drinks through your Butler and have them brought to the suite (at a hefty price which may or may not matter to some) but then, I could be wrong about that.

The complimentary 3 bottles of liquor for suite guests which is offered (I have not read anywhere yet that this is a "real" offer on POA except on forums, so I'm not even sure it exists) is in the form of wine or champagne when cruising NCL's POA in Hawaii.

All that said, I still wonder if there are single "airplane" bottles that can be purchased and brought into the room. Not sure. It's all a little fuzzy and quite honestly, I have read so many conflicting reviews, I'm not sure what to expect. We will likely resolve to drinking wine or bubbly while we're in the room and save the hard stuff for elsewhere.

Regardless of the rules, the drinks will find me! :tropical-drink::bottle-pop::cocktail::wine-glass::whiskey-glass:

Hi Sunflower and the Scientist. The original poster of the photos is ksimpso3. You may want to direct your reply to original poster to be certain that person sees your question and can answer it for you.

  7. I just read a day-by-day review from a couple who sailed the POA on the first cruise after dry-dock in March 2016. At one point during the trip, passengers toured the ship's staterooms including an Owner's Suite and the only Deluxe Owner's Suite as well. She took photos of the rooms and the amenities in them including the coffee maker. In both of those categories, the coffee maker is a DeLonghi Citiz Nespresso machine. I recognized it because I have a Nespresso at home and I then went to the DeLonghi site to confirm. I also downloaded a link to the usage guide for this machine.

    Here it is:

  8. I'm so pleased my review is still helping people over a year later! Thank you for reading. The rooms are small, to be sure, but perfectly functional. :)

You'll be pleased to know then, that your review is helping me tremendously... to plan our first Hawaiian cruise... nearly 3 years after your trip! We sail on the POA August 5th, 2017 on our 30th Anniversary Celebration. I'm so excited I can hardly contain it!

I have saved your full review into my notes and highlighted every pertinent detail that applies to us. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. And for being so incredibly uplifting as well. So refreshing to read reviews from people who are anti-curmudgeon! :halo:

  9. We had no plans for this day. I had read that there were touristy gift shops right near the pier, so we planned on getting our souvenirs here. We woke up to a beautiful sunny day so we decided to just hang out on the ship by the pool for an hour or two and then get off. We really enjoyed just laying around doing nothing (since there are no sea days on this itinerary).

The girls made it to Cagneys with us this morning

We grabbed some lunch at the buffet and decided to head into town. The tender was very quick and there was a tiny beach right at the end of the pier. We went towards the right as one of the waitresses at the pool sent us on a mission to find the bartender she "likes" at a restaurant there :). We did some shopping and stopped in the restaurant for a few drinks and some appetizers.

Oh my goodness, this review is so much fun to read! I am truly enjoying your photos and learning little things about how to take in and capture the "small stuff" when we go. For example, the photo of the wet footprints on the aft pool deck... such a neat expression-both literal and figurative-of your journey. Very playful! And sitting at the bar at The Fish Hopper... are those S'mores martinis? With toasted marshmallows for garnish? Genius! Were they delicious?

I do have one issue with this photo however... Ray Lewis is photo-bombing you! How dare he make an appearance during your Hawaiian excursion? Can't recall if our Giants made it to the Super Bowl that year but it's good to know they got some support from you all those miles from home!

  10. Found it - 6:30 to 9:30 and Sat to 8:30.

    Lunch noon to 2.

Excellent! Thank you for being so organized! We will be exiting the ship super early each morning for our golf excursions and we were hoping to be able to take advantage of Cagney's for breakfast since we booked a suite. I think 6:30 will work out most days. Appreciate the help.

  11. Welcome to CC.

Breakfast and lunch is at Cagneys for all suite passengers. Also get priority tender.

On POA you can only get breakfast and lunch off the main room service menu - they won't serve Cagney's breakfast or lunch in your room like they do on the other ships.

Do you (or anyone viewing this thread) happen to know what time Cagney's opens for breakfast daily to Suite Passengers? Cannot seem to find this out anywhere. Thought someone in this specific thread might be in the know. I even found a copy of the ships "newspaper" online but they don't have the hours listed there for Cagney's breakfast and lunch. I'm sure it's because this option only applies to suite guests.

  12.

Not sure if a link will get you to the right page.

However, I may have a solution. Let's see if i can explain this without it being super confusing (and I mean that sincerely as a fault to my upcoming explanation, not to sound condescending in any way.)

I noticed there is a bit of a "glitch" with the NCL site when you are searching for a date on their drop-down menu. I chose the destination of Hawaii and then clicked on the 7 day Hawaiian Islands Cruise on POA Itinerary and then continued on to the "booking" link and went through all the steps. When searching for the date we wanted to sail, (August 5th, 2017) I could see the previous sail date and the post sail date, but not our sail date (and I knew there must be a sailing on this date because they promote this Itinerary by saying it cruises 52 weeks a year.) However, I was noticing when I clicked through the dates in the drop down, I could see a small section of OUR sail date for a fraction of a second, but it would not "fall in line" for me to view on-screen. So I figured there was a programming glitch here. To find the date, I went back to the main menu, chose the destination AND the exact month I wanted to sail. Once I had the month set up in my search options, when I finally got to the sailing dates, it displayed ONLY August dates. On this screen, ALL AUGUST dates came up into view. Try it by entering your month, maybe you will have better luck. I sure hope this made some sense, so tough to explain these things "on paper". Happy cruising!
