Okay okay I relent due to the nice positive posters here. I will pack one pair of nice looking long pants. I was brought up on the Rick Steve's way of packing light and figured a summer trip in Europe would be okay for shorts. I have been to Europe a few times including London, Paris, many cities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. All land based no cruises. Nobody cared what was worn as long as it was clean and neutral. A few churches do indeed have dress codes but mainly for the ladies to make sure parts of them are covered at the appropriate times. Thanks for the advice. Now on to my Viking "plonk wines" as was so eloquently described by a poster above LOL.

Participants, here on Cruise Critic, are armed with extensive information including which cruise lines, both river and ocean, allow its cruisers to wear shorts to dinner. This also includes to which venues on the ships those policies apply. Therefore, there is absolutely no reason for said participants, that want to wear shorts to dinner, to choose a cruise line that doesn't allow such.
Fwiw, I always considered it primarily a marketing decision. TGYFridays, Outback Steakhouse, and Appleby's allow people to wear shorts and their baseball hats to dinner. Other local upscale fine dining establishments do not. The dress codes are an expression of the company's view of their venues. Some cruise lines allow shorts and baseball hats, others don't. I saw people wear grunge on Viking, which sort of matches their plonk wines. Marketing and perception.
I can see you are a Viking fan. Outstanding LOL.

Going on our first ever cruise, A Viking cruise (Grand European 6/30/17) and I am brining no long pants on the trip. See no reason not to wear shorts. Do people take notes or what LOL???
