It may depend on the weather forecast for the day. I use an app (Dark Sky) which shows the weather for the next 7 days by hour. It is fairly accurate for the current day and the next day - forecast of rain tends to shift around if you look farther out. Afternoon should be fine.

 

You can arrange for a taxi to drop you off and pick you up in advance. The shuttle buses are $45 each so the same as the ship's tour for 4. Or you could get a rental car. Either taxi or rental car is probably cheaper for 4.

We are also group of 4 for Mendenhall Glacier. You mentioned arrange taxi to drop off/pick up in advance. Any contact info for taxi? How much roughly? Thank you very much.
