The surcharges are in place because the vehicles in many cases will have to return to NY City empty. I don't know what Uber and Lyft are charging at present but a NY City taxi will have a $17.50 surcharge over the metered fare, plus you will have to pay round trip tolls (figure up to about $20), and a tip of 15 to 20% of the fare is customary.

I'd suggest getting quotes from the two large car services used by many cruisers, Dial 7 www.dial7.com and Carmel Limo www.carmellimo.com. They'll give you a fixed fare quote so you don't have to worry about a metered taxi fare that could run up quickly if  you get stuck in traffic. You'll have to add tolls and tip to those quotes but that's no different than what you have to do for a taxi. They should quote about $50-$60 base fare, to which you'll have to add the tolls and tip. Just make sure you honestly state the number of passengers and amount of luggage  they may require you to take something larger than a basic sedan.

Thanks for all the helpful info!

  2. Group of 3 adults + carry on bags & 2-3 check in roller bags looking for the best and most cost effective post-cruise transportation option from Manhattan Cruise Terminal to Newark Airport.  NCL Gem arrives at 10am and flight is in the late afternoon. Given mobility restrictions and luggage, we're not interested in using public transportation.

Current options: taxi, uber, lyft, or reserved private car.

I've read that there's a $20 surcharge for uber and lyft for any rides crossing state lines. I think Taxis also have a $15 surcharge for this. Dial7 fares online do not include fee costs in estimates.

    Any thoughts or past experiences?

  3. Our group of 8 will be sailing on the Epic in September boarding in Rome. I've done a search but haven't found this answer. If the ship is set to leave Rome at 7pm, what time do we need to be on the ship? Do we need to be there for the muster drill that I believe I read is at 4:30pm? Just trying to plan our transportation from Rome to the port and need to know what time we should book this. Thank you!

Hi there! I sailed on the Epic out of Rome last September. We stayed at Hotel San Giorgio & took a shuttle over to port around 12. Muster drill was around 4/4:30. I believe all embarkation services ended around 3:30. IF your sailing is like the one I went on, Rome is not the starting point for that cruise. More than likely, a majority of the boat will have embarked in Barcelona (roughly 3,000 in Barcelon & 1,000 in Rome). The ship departs at 7pm but the was the time for the Barcelona passengers who had already been a part of the ship. I believe they will host a second muster drill if you are unable to make it the 4:30.

  4. Hi! I have a 10:55 flight booked the day we return in Jan, 21st. If you also leave same day as returning to port, can you report/describe taxi status leaving port and conditions at airport. We will do self assist debark to make it speedier, barring any actual delay in returning. Thank you so much! Enjoy your cruise!!

Looks like you got a couple updates already, but I will post my experience with disembarkation at the Pan Am Port yesterday (Sunday, Dec 3).

The NCL Dawn offered easy walk off (carry your own luggage off the boat) & it started promptly at 6:30AM. Disembarkation by color groups went smoothly until around 9:45AM..an announcement was made that there were "slight delays" in the terminal & current disembarkation was put on hold for at least 15-20 minutes. Our estimated debark time based on our luggage color RED was 10:15. We were off the boat & bags in hand by around 10:45AM. Line for customs was extensive & a delay seemed to be caused by incomplete customs declarations forms..many guests were reaching the customs officials without a completed form (blame the language barrier for some part as the form is only in English).

Line at the taxi stand was <5 minute wait & they were often putting multiple small groups of 2 or 3 people together into one shared taxi van. Fare for 3 people with 4 rolling bags =$25.

Wait times at the airport vary by airline. We flew with Southwest and were in line for about 30 minutes to check our bags. Would've been faster to skip check in bags..but Southwest offers free checked bags.

TSA precheck was as fast as other airports I've experienced.

I'm not sure which ship you are sailing with, but if you're on the Dawn...I believe you will be able to make your flight if you get off the boat right as the disembarkation process begins.

We will be doing the same thing on Sunday. I will post an update! :) Thanks

  6. Hi Fellow NCL cruisers,

I've combed the threads repeatedly and haven't found an answer yet..

For Europe based cruises (ex. NCL epic sailing from Rome or Barcelona), are on board charges processed by NCL international or domestic? I have not cruised with NCL for any Europe based itineraries (past cruise charges have always processed out of Miami for me) & just wanted to make sure that the CC I put on file for on board charges will not incur a foreign transaction fee. I've contacted NCL several times..only to be answered with "all on board charges are processed in US dollars" --not quite what I asked..

    Thanks

  7. Have you considered the high speed trains? They are significantly faster and cheaper. They are quite modern and comfortable. There is an excellent website about the train system here.

Thanks Jeast! The website you mentioned is an excellent resource for figuring out the Italian trains. The high speed train is definitely a close second on my list for transfer options (but with more consideration, it may win out in the end).

  8. Thank you all for your replies! I am so grateful for all the resources being a part of CC has given me in planning my future trips.

I did not mention in my original post that I am looking at a ONE WAY transfer from Rome to Venice. Tiber Limo notes that the transfer can be completed in 6-7 hours (with 3-5 hours added in for stops in other cities along the way). We have a couple of days between two cruises (one that ends in Rome & the next starts in Venice) & I've been eyeing different option for us to get to Venice on the day before our next cruise starts. The train is certainly the fastest and cheaper option when compared to the private car...however, I would like to explore more of Italy (in between our cruises) and felt that a private driver would provide us the option to briefly visit a couple more cities on the way (Bologna, Florence, Orvieto, etc).

  9. Hi Fellow Cruisers,

Does anyone have experience with using Tiber Limo for private long distance transfers? I am thinking of using their service for a transfer from Rome to Venice, but the most recent reviews that discuss this service are a coupe of years old already.

If not Tiber Limo, does anyone have experience with any other companies for transfers from Rome to Venice?

    Thanks!
