  1. On a sadder note, 4 passengers from a Princess cruise ship died at George Inlet near Ketchikan yesterday on an organized cruise excursion, two are still missing. It seems the 2 planes involved are the same models as the planes listed for the Misty Fjords excursion from the Sojourn on June 4th. Not good news but, there might be a few complications for that excursion when we get there.

  2. Hi SLSD, Yes, we are seeing the same proliferation of emails, which include our booking #. We are dealing with SB direct, ie no TA, so there always has been a significant stream of email. The Jacket order with sizing originally came thru in mid January and was responded to, and yesterday we received a second request for sizes, and also advice as to what other gear is available for purchase with free delivery to the ship, and reminders of all the excursions “still” available. Given that the Koroshio Cruise is now full, maybe it is the case that a significant number of new folks need to be advised and info is reposted to the whole list of travelers because it is the easiest and surest procedure. Or otherwise the marketing people at SB are just keen to remind everyone that there are lots of things to buy! Apparently there will be extra jackets available on board and it seems that there are lots of excursion possibilities open, so surely SB has everything under control  and it will be a wonderful cruise. The weather thru the Bering Strait has been a tad rough lately though.

  3. Hilarious! It would be abundantly clear to most folks mildly familiar with a decent international wine list that what we see of the SB complimentary list is quite mediocre and definitely at the cheap end of the wine shop spectrum. Don’t need no wine-searcher to reveal the truth there. The problem for those that appreciate “nice” wine is to find some value in the SB Premium offerings, where the “Recommended Premiums” are significantly overpriced. SB will sell the Veuve Clicquot Le Grande Dame for $294, whilst is can be had at the local wine shop for $160. The basic Veuve Yellow is $64 as against $44 in the local; The St Henri Shiraz is $134/$64; Louis Latour Gevrey Chambertin is $99/$53; and so on. You might think offshore wine with no taxes even with simple storage would be cheaper, but no. And then SB add salt to the offerings by offering a lottery of wines in the Silver and Gold Collections. IF the Silver/Gold wines are nominated from the listed Premiums, the average price for the Collections is about $75 for the reds against about $110 for the whole Premium range, so maybe a little value there. At the same time the average for the premium range at “the local” is closer to $60. Overall the Collections might still be a trifle overpriced relative to the “local wine shop” but maybe worth the plunge to bookend an otherwise great cruise? So the question to the “oenophiles”, who might have “availed” themselves of either of the collections, are they selected from the list of Premiums as nominated? Are there more or less Premiums included at time of actual sailing? There is also a rumor, that the Premiums and the respective collections are actually “discounted” heavily once the cruise has begun. Any truth in this?
  4. A couple of interesting wines on the complimentary list, but substantial improvement on the premium list. What is the experience with the Connoisseurs selection? Presumably 3 or 6 wines out of the premium list? An average price in the $70s. Value for money here?  Does anyone have any insight here?

  5. You are a fortunate person having an ancestor from Campbeltown. There are many malt fanciers who would wish to have a friend or relative with an inside track to Springbank or Longrow. (“my preferred malt is xxxxx, but my best friend has a great collection of Springbank”) As a function of the small artisanal distillery, the wonderful dram is not abundantly available. So an ancestor might be a good place to start. It might be a “longbow” to find a springbank friend on Seabourn, but we can dream.
