  1. Just checked my booking and didn't see anywhere to pick a time. Our cruise leaves Feb 9th. We are Platinum. So I'm wondering if that's the reason I don't see it on my booking???

PS Never mind I did find it. Had to back to my online checkin. It was there....

    Great!!!

  2. Does a Platinum or Diamond even have to pick a time since it doesn't matter??

We are platinum also and we're able to pick a window.

Guests who are part of our Priority Program (Diamond, Platinum and suites), have purchased transfers with Carnival or 'Faster to the Fun' must still select a window online, but are invited to come at their leisure, up to one (1) hour prior to sailing - please select your anticipated check-in time so that we can prepare for your arrival onboard. Please keep in mind that transfers and Faster to the Fun may not be available for all sailings. Departure times can be found on your boarding pass.

  3. The Princess version has passenger name, ship, and sail date engraved on the medallion exterior. At a guess this allows it to be used in place of the card. It also makes it a suitable replacement for those who retain their cards as.

In an earlier post I made the same point that is why the medallions will be personalized because the government requires it.

  4. How is using a cell phone different than getting your boarding pass on your phone and getting on a plane? JH has even mentioned, and I have seen it on here as well, that your boarding pass can be found in an email that you can electronically show to the people at the port and it acts the same as the paper one. I haven't done it that way myself, but it is an option from what I understand.

As far as making online purchases on the cell phone, I would think that it could be done through the Hub App which does require your folio number to log into, therefore, identifying the passenger.

It does not matter that you can show port personnel on embarkation the fact still remains the government requires a cruise ship to have passengers names, ship, and sailing dates on a sail and sign card to identify them once on board.

Cell phone technology on its own would defeat some of the most important things Carnival is attempting to achieve. None of these require any action from the passenger as cell phone technology would require.

    - attendance at safety drills simplified

    - knowing passengers preferences once on board in the dining room, at bars etc

    - could be used to easily control access of any time dining

    - FTTF easier to control especially during embarkation since it would alert the stewards whether or not a particular passenger should be there.

The list is only limited by what Carnival can dream up.

All of that can be defeated simply by shutting off a cell phone.

Carnival has invested 100 million dollars into this technology and that's what it's going to be though it will use cell phone technology but they will be used as a terminal device.

  5. You mean... like a CARD!

Seriously how is this better than what already exists? This is a solution looking for a problem.

Unlike a card you never have to remove it from your pocket or swipe it to buy a drink, open your cabin door, etc.

One of the major problems with using a cell phone is that the government requires your name, ship, and cruise date to be inscribed to identify each passenger.

That's why the medallions will be "personalized". This technology is the way Carnival is heading and I can't see them ever going to smart phone technology but they will use it to complement this effort.

  6. I'd rather this just be part of the hub app. I don't wear my sign and sail pass for several reasons, the Medallion is that but on steroids.

Like Sitzmark, I can check in to my hotel with my phone & never talk to anyone (although if it's before the cruise I guess I HAVE to as I need to organize the shuttle)

My understanding is that you don't have to wear the medallion it just has to be with you and can be in your pocket if you wish.

    Take care,

    Vinnie

  7. The first ship to have this implemented will be on Princess later this year late in the fall. To implement each ship will need 7,000 sensors installed so it will be sometime before a Carnival ship will have it.

This looks like a project that will take years to fully implement.

  8. We rented a car and then bought a app from Gypsy Guide for iPhone (there is one for Droid). The app was terrific it provided turn by turn driving directions and narration along the way.

Along the route the narration pointed out key spots that we might want to pull over. At one point it told us to pull over and park then cross the road and walk up he beach as there might be sea turtle on the beach in the sun. Sure enough there it was just laying there. Another time the app pointed out a fruit stand that sold fresh fruit already cut and placed in plastic baggies.

It was like having a tour guide in the car and we were even able to listen to it through the car speakers using a Bluetooth connection.

  9. I inquired once while on ship and the guarantee is pretty easy for them to give since they pretty much required the excursion to match exactly.

To me it's just a way for Carnival to have passengers book excursions with them thinking the price will be matched.

  10. Just enjoy the experience!!!

Cruising is much different than other vacations. This being your first ship there is nothing to compare too and I am betting it will be a very enjoyable experience...

  11. We just got back from the partial on the Coral and had a port side balcony. We also went down on Deck 11 through the forward door onto the viewing area as we approached into the first chamber. Amazing. We then bounced around and then did the Gatun Lake - Canal Tour. The Lake portion was unimpressive (another boat ride) but the upclose Canal portion was one of a kind.

Those same deck doors are available on deck 10 and 9 on the Coral.

The advantage is you are looking directly over the front railing and not through the blue tinted glass that are on the other pubic decks.

  12. He will also need photo ID to fly, he will need photo ID in ports and yes, they will refuse him boarding (while allowing the rest of the family on).

    Not true.....

    From the TSA website:

    Identification

Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)

    U.S. passport

    U.S. passport card

DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)

    Permanent resident card

    Border crossing card

    DHS-designated enhanced driver's license

Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)

    Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID

    HSPD-12 PIV card

    Foreign government-issued passport

Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

    Transportation worker identification credential

Immigration and Naturalization Service Employment Authorization Card (I-766)

    U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

ID requirements at the checkpoint will change beginning Jan. 22, 2018. Learn about REAL ID, read the FAQ or factsheet.

A weapon permit is not an acceptable form of identification. A temporary driver's license is not an acceptable form of identification.

    Children

TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.

  13. If you are going to rent a car I would highly recommend taking a look at a product from Gypsy Guide. These are guide apps designed for either iPhone or Android and use the GPS feature of the phone to provide directions and commentary.

We used them for several ports and it was like having your own personal tour guide in the car. At one point the app told us to pull over at the end of the guard rails and park then cross the road to a beach. Then walk to the right up the beach as there might be a sea turtle sunning itself. Sure enough there was a turtle laying on the beach.

It pointed out fruit stands where fruit could be purchased already packaged in plastic baggies ready to eat. Where to find food trucks that sold freshly prepared shrimp. If there was longer periods of driving time the app explained the history of the island.

We were able to connect our iPhone using Bluetooth to the cars radio which was great for listening.

  15. We have had large parties on the same cruise and Carnival will seat the group at tables next to each other but a party of fourteen will not be at one table.

As others have stated just make sure all the reservations are linked to each other.

  16. my gift cards always arrive USPS in my mailbox. I have never had to sign for them

We have had four different deliveries of Carnival Gift cards all via UPS in the past couple of weeks from AARP and Verizon all of them had to be signed for as the previous OP stated.

Not sure I would want over $500.00 just laying in my mailbox or trying to prove they never got delivered if that were to happen.

    Take care,

    Vinnie
