  1. Juneau tours offers a shuttle back to the docks for $20 cash payable to the driver. Leaves from “Bear Stop” every half hour. Round trip is $45. You can pay ahead and get a voucher on-line from their web site but the site mentions getting in line. Probably with hundreds of other cruisers.

  2. We plan on taking the taxi to the glacier ($35pp+$2 park entrance fee pp/with nat.park pass +$10pp surcharge). This seems high but it beats waiting for a shuttle.

I would like to know if the shuttle offers one-way fares and the cost.

    Thanks in advance

  3. Our OP may find it helpful to check the aurora forecast section of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute (www.auroraforecast.gi.alaska.edu). Look at the right side of the index page and open the tab for "viewing the aurora in Northern Summer." That will tell you what your chances are depending on location and the index level for aurora activity.

That being said, several years ago a young woman posted a trip review of an Alaska cruise which she and her sister did. They were on the last sailing of the season on a line I have never been on (I can't remember if it was Carnival or NCL). Her review had some photos of an aurora taken from the ship, and quite frankly I was surprised at the quality of the photos.

Tried the website but doesn't seem to exist.

  4. We have AAA as the agent but use them sparingly. Just to answer questions. They do give a couple of freebies like VIP check in. We’re going in August with Princess. They’re good at listing times for just about everything but they do say “afternoon free” or “morning free”. We’ve only got one excursion booked in Denali thru Princess. It’s an 11 hour tour of the park. We’ll walk/hike the remainder.

  5. How is Princess cruises on arriving in port on time and planting your feet on the pier? Specifically Skagway and Ketchican. We're thinking of going with excursions other than offered by the cruise line. Ship is suppose to dock at 7am and tour starts at 8:30am Can we make it, but with some time to spare.

    Thanks

  6. read the back of the card. A 15% gratutity is automatically added to the price of a drink. When they give you the slip of paper to sign there’s a place to add a tip which, I believe, you would naturally write in an amount. I don’t drink and my wife only had two so it was no big deal. Sops beware.

  7. There are web sites you can go to that calculate the exchange rates. You can figure what works best for you. Bring back as many sovernirs as you want. You are allowed one liter of booze and 100 cigars per person duty free. After that you are suppose to pay a small duty like $3 a bottle. However, when I went thru customs in Tampa I showed the agent my passport and he said welcome back to the US. Not one question as to what I brought back. Go to tripadvisor.com to find private tours. Opt for a convertible to see Havana then walk around Old Havana by yourselves the next day. It will get old quick as there are very few shops. Door front sovernirs and small bakeries were about it. If you want to eat at a local restaurant again

check trip advisor for a good one. But remember that alot of herbs and spices sre not avsilable. Hope this helps.

It’s just amazing to be there.

  8. Once you dock be prepared to spend alot of time sitting around waiting to get off the ship. We docked Friday 10/06 at 1:15pm, an hour late. Those that had Carnival booked tours started debarking around 3. We had a private tour and got off around 4:15. Our driver left at 4 pm thinking we were no shows. We did hook up with a taxi driver with a guide. '53 Chevy PINK conv. Excellent. 2hrs for 100 cuc's. However, the gas and diesel fumes were pretty bad within the confines of the buildings and narrow streets. Overcast but low humidity. Saturday morning we walked around Old Havana by ourselves. Very interesting but very few shops. The humidity was almost too much to take. Havana is absolutely great.
