  1. It doesn't mater where in the thread you post. When you make a comment about your financial situation you open yourself up to having that comment scrutinized.

Your original post touched on a hot button subject - tipping. Most of the people on Cruise Critic are very pro tipping - the more the better. I will admit I tip, I will admit I sometimes tip more than is suggested, but I will not discuss the amounts, nor will I say if tipping the recommended amount affects my budget or not. Unfortunately you have put yourself in the cross hairs of a lot of current Cruise Critic members.

If you want my advice, tip what you think is fair and keep that to yourself. Otherwise, contact your local fire department and find out where to buy flame proof clothing. Also, keep a fire extinguisher near the computer.

I did not say tipping the recommended amounts would affects my budget, I was asking about paying auto grats and tipping generously on top. I never said paying auto grays was out of my budget and I never mentioned amounts.

  2. There is some really good information here, and good answers. I tend to lurk more then ask, but learn a lot from reading.

There are a handful of topics that do bring out some "lively" discussions, you picked on of the most lively unknowingly. Don't let that stop you from asking more questions if you have them.

Definitely think I will look more than ask in future. I just hope someone asks what I want to know [emoji23]

  3. Ginny,

I completely understand your question, and know that you have the crew's best interest at heart. I'm afraid most of this discussion is now directed at those who say they don't tip, don't believe in tipping, etc.

Ok, think I'm getting sucked into this to much [emoji23]. My genuine concern was pre paying and then feeling guilty about not being able to individually tip larger amounts but I've been re-assured that this won't be the case. This is our first proper cruise, myself and my husband did a mini cruise and was overwhelmed by the the service. This is why we wanted to make sure we were going to do the right thing.

  4. I realize you are new to this forum, but you post above just set you up for a lot of abuse, or in Internet language - flaming. Personally I think finances are none of anyone's business except yourself, which is why I will not discuss such matters myself.

The post you have commented on was not my original question it was a response. I was under the impression that forums were a platform to ask questions not a platform to apparently ask for abuse. Anyway you're right I am new to here and I won't be asking any questions again. There are a some on here that are genuine and have given good advice in a pleasant manner. The rest of you clearly enjoy arguing and criticising each other.

  5. so its not a financial option but after listening to people on this board you are going to do it anyway? there is an inconsistency in your posts. Tipping above and beyond after leaving the auto tips on is probably best but not if its not financially an option. Leaving the auto tips only is perfectly acceptable

As I said, will leave it on both rooms and tip. We will not to be able to tip as GENEROUSLY as we would like but will tip what we can afford!

  6. After listening to the useful advice I will probably be leaving it on both rooms. So my next question is would you tip each day, I'm thinking you will have a lot of interaction with your room attendant so would you tip him/her extra each day, at the end?

  7. I'm thinking she would like to tip the individuals personally that she interacts with on a daily basis during her holiday but as she's already said doesn't want the people who also works hard to not receive any tip. And that comment is exactly what made me think twice about asking a question, shame really that these forums are here for this but people are made to feel they can't ask questions in fear of negative people commenting

  8. Because I initially planned to remove and tip individuals, I know people do this but as I said didn't want the behind the scenes staff to not receive any tip. In an ideal world I would leave the gratuities on both rooms and tip individuals generously however that's not a financial option for us.

  9. Hi, we have a cruise booked next year for myself, my husband and 4 children. We would like to tip individuals but obviously don't want the staff that are more behind the scenes to miss out. My question is do you think it would be acceptable to remove the gratuities on one room and use this to tip individuals and leave the gratuities on the other room?
