  1. I can't sleep without my fan noise. The best I've found is on Amazon (Dizaul mini USB rechargeable). Great, compact fan that's perfect for cruising as it takes up very little space but really packs a punch. Can use the rechargeable battery or plug it in with the cord they give you. $14.99 on Amazon. I love it so much I bought a second one for the office.

Just ordered it. Can't beat the price and the minicharger and flashlight too! Thanks a lot for the tip. Cruising for the first time in 3 weeks.

  2. I am going to be taking my beloved boys ages 11 and 14 on a cruise in 2020. I am wondering if a passport card is good for cruising. I have always used my birth certificate and DL, but I am worried that I will misplace my birth certificate. It has always worried me. I looked into getting passports for all of us, but it seems a bit pricey for me. The passport cards are $40 each for the boys and $55 each for me and my husband. I was curious to see if anyone else has just the card and not a full passport. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

    Greysea,

My wife and I just got the cards. Was a pretty easy process and quick! Yes, it is a bit cheaper too. Plus, its a little smaller than the book (basically the size of your license), so easy to carry around. Of course, as others stated, it has a more limited use. But should be good for cruising.. Good luck.

  3. Do your homework before booking any standalone beach excursion - unless it's on a private island or somewhere restricted access (seldom the case), you can often make your own way there via taxi for a fraction of what the cruise lines charge you, especially when you start factoring in multiple people. That $75-$100+ per person ship excursion is sometimes little more than a ride, a chair, and a "free" drink. It really depends on how frugal you want to be if spending $200 for that when you can accomplish the same yourself for perhaps $50.

I recognize the on you're looking at it a combination excursion, but just for future reference, or for other ports. ;)

Definitely a cost saver..thanks for the tip Mark.

  4. We have done it three times and love it. It has become a tradition for us in Cozumel. The Fury Catamaran will pick you up on the pier just across from the boat, you will see it easily when it arrives from almost anywhere in the port area. I suggest going over and loading up soon after it arrives if you want a good seat and especially in the shade.

They will take you about 10 minutes down the shore to a snorkeling area where you will be able to snorkel for about 45 minutes. Some people have claimed they shorted them on this time, but I was in the water a full 45 minutes (I timed it last month when I was there).

Then the free rum punch and sodas will start and they will take you another 20 minutes to a private beach which has a small shop for souvenirs, burgers and fries, lots of chairs, hammocks and day beds and many inflatable toys in the water to play on. They also have kayaks available.

About an hour on the beach and it is back to the pier, free drinks here also and the crew usually start some line dancing on deck when headed back.

They will take pictures and try to sell them to you, but mine were great and we bought them for $10. A tip is expected at the end.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

  5. We fly the day before. Once our flight was canceled due to storms in FL and had to rent a car and drive from Columbus Oh to Miami. You just never know what can happen. I would also recommend Comfort Inn on Stirling Rd if you fly into Ft Lauderdale. It's cheap, clean, free airport shuttle and in a shopping plaza. Plenty of walkable places to get wine or anything you may forget.

Thanks for the recommendation Jaxsmama! Will look it up if we decide to go the day before,

  6. Always a day early. It's worth the extra expense and rest.

I'm guessing from ATL you would need to be at airport 6:30/6:45. Depending on how far of a drive you have your probably going to be up be 5:00 at the latest.

Fly , get luggage, get transportation, get checked in and board. Noon-12:30

You've already put in a full day!

    Beerman (nice name),

Was just talking to my better half about this last night and mentioned this very point you make sir. Then after a long day and night, it appears the Key West port debarkation is at 7:30 AM the following morning!! Oh well, I don't think you go on the cruise to catch up on sleep ;).

  7. Nick, I wanted to add one more thing.

I know some people who would fly in the day of the cruise and didn't have an issue until...........and all it took was one time and now they say never again.

Keith, that's what I am afraid of..ugh. I will definitely consider it. Good thoughts and seems most are in agreement with this.

  8. New cruiser here and have read a few posts about this, yet was curious if most fly in the day before? I am coming from Atlanta to Miami (or Ft Lauderdale) and there are several choices of flights to arrive by 8:45(in March). Is that not plenty of time to get to the port?

I understand there is a chance for flight delays due to weather etc. and it is a personal decision but just curious what you all usually do and your general thoughts on it. BTW Ft. Lauderdale seems a bit cheaper... but farther.

    Thoughts?,

  9. New Cruiser here and have a read a few posts regarding the FTTF. I just purchased for our cruise on Victory in March. I see that you have priority boarding behind Diamond and Platinum folks and it gives me a 12-1 time even before I picked a time? I am assuming I need to arrive at the time on the ticket and secondly, are there other benefits? Impulse purchase this morning...

    Thanks,
