  1. :)

Was the cruise overly crowded during this time frame?

The ship was not overly crowded on that cruise. Not many kids because it is an 11 day cruise during the school year. Even though most kids had a 4 day weekend, I believe parents didn’t want to take them out of school for so many days.

  2. RCL's ships sailing routinely out of NY don't run into tidal issues, AFAIK - the channel is deep enough, and, the changes in tides do not follow the 24 hour clock on a year-round basis.

The changes, as I mentioned earlier, as been done for a while, not recently or "now" as OP wrote. Here's our Breakaway schedule from March 2014, all abroad & sailing time was 4 PM. Morning arrival/disembarkation was 8 AM.

Note that ship sailed into PC at 12 noon and leave at 9 PM, all abroad being 8:30 PM ... we actually arrive a little earlier than planned, not by much. I am sure those that sailed lately can confirm, ship cruise at a leisure speed ... usually not averaging more than 17 or 18 knots. If and when there is an onboard medical emergency but short of medevac, they will run "all ahead, full speed, closer to 21 or 22 knots & get in earlier" - burning more fuel = $$$$.

Fast forward to 2017, both the Gem and BA that we're on, had a 3PM sailing time out of NY, basically on time with a planned arrival of 1 PM at PC, 1 was early and 1 was later than 1 PM - and, due to pier runners late, didn't leave PC till 10 PM+

My point, being, that, it is NOT a "recent" change that happened almost now, been done that way for a way, for most NCL sailing ... and, NY harbor is a busy one, with vessels crossing the Hudson all day long as well as the Staten Island ferries, etc. - not just cruise ships.

I can always count on you to have the answers. We sailed to the Caribbean last November on the Gem. It was the first time the Gem left after the breakdown on the Halloween sailing, you were most informative regarding the status of repairs in Barbados. We departed NY at 6 pm, I remember thinking there must be a problem because we were not departing at 4. Another example of the need to read edocs.

  3. I have submitted an upgrade bid for April 8 sailing on the Breakaway. Has anyone else on that sailing had bids accepted as yet. I see that it is no longer on the list of upcoming cruises so I am assuming that it is sold out which probably means there will be no upgrades.

  4. We were also upgraded on 2 past bookings but were given that information a couple of weeks in advance. I guess NCL is waiting to see how many bookings they get in the next few days. Just wondering if anyone actually had to wait until the day before sailing, I hope not since my luggage tags have no room number at present. Thanks for your answer

    :p

  5. I know a lot of you have sailed on the Breakaway, we are leaving on the 8th of April and I am looking for some information. We just attained Platinum status. I see that one of the benefits is dinner for 2 at Cagneys or leBistro and dinner for 2 at LaCucina or Moderno. Would someone be able to tell me where we would go to reserve the dinners. The gentleman at NCL who booked the trip told me that we have to make the reservations when we board the ship. Is there a particular place to go for Platinum members? I would appreciate any guidance you experts may have. TIA for your help.

  6. All the NY cruises seem HIGH to me....especially compared to the same length cruises leaving out of MIA. I guess folks like sailing 2 days in the cold...out of 7....

My husband does not like (hates) flying, ugh! I certainly do not like sailing in the cold out of NY but if I want to go, that's what I have to do. For that reason, I prefer a longer cruise.

  7. We got a great deal on the Gem last April on a 10 day cruise out of NY. It appears that they are not offering longer cruises after March this year. I assume they are catering to the spring breakers who usually want shorter trips. I guess we are going to have to pay more this year for April cruises.

    Thanks for your insight.
