As stated several time before, a vaccine requirement FOR NOW is about the only way these cruise ships will ever start sailing again, FOR NOW.  However, as the virus situation improves, and it has a long way to go in many countries, and the majority of folks have elected to be vaccinated, which then brings down the risk to a manageable level, then I will speculate that the vaccinated requirement, and mask requirement, will be history, just a bad memory.  But for now, if you're not vaccinated, it sounds like you won't be sailing, FOR NOW.  It almost sounds like the non vaccinated are whining, "It's not fair. If we can't go, we don't want anyone to go."   My opinion.

Don't hold your breath.  Models indicate we will be dealing with Covid for at least 20 years.  To weaken it we need high levels of vaccination.   The viruses that survive over time are the ones that do not kill their host.   We just need to adapt, and over time we will have a new normal closer to the old normal.  We were 30-60 day a year cruisers, but will not ever sail on a ship that does not have a strict vaccination policy that include all children.

My husband is an avid photographer and it becomes his primary focus when we travel. We dock in Tauranga (Rotorua), NZ on Sat, Feb 22, 2020.  I am trying to decide if the White Island Helicopter Flight and Volcano Walking Tour are worthy of thier expense & truly offer a once in a lifetime experience.

I am also seeking recommendations for best photographic opportunities in our other ports (esp. wild life, nature, geographic, or local would be appreciated). We will be in Aukland 3 days precruise...

Our ports in NZ include Aukland, Picton, Wellington, Akaroa (Christchurch), Port Chalmers, & Oban (Half-moon Bay).

Followed by Melbourne, Phillip Island (Victoria), Eden & Sydney.  ---Thanks in advance

After the tragedy yesterday, White Island is permanently closed.   Sad day

  3. It is good to keep in mind this is an old ship, that is up for sale. They are not going to spend big bucks on the ship. We did the Voyage of the Vikings in 2016 on her. The hot/cold water issues were significant on that cruise as well. The plumbing systems need to be totally replaced, and they are not going to do that on a ship they are trying to sell. I was hoping to hear good reviews on the infrastructure, but that does not seem to be the case.

The ship is not going to attract the best crew members, but we should not accept less than great service. They are a new crew, and it will take a little time for them to get together, We are doing the 21 days out of Tampa 7/7/18. Still despite issues, I have never had a bad cruise, and the next one on the old ship will not be my first.

  4. I have carried with me for the past 17 years of cruising a small (about 10oz) French Press. I like fresh brewed coffee, and there is always plenty of hot water available which is the key to brewing good coffee. I started with the french press due to cruise lines using what looked like brewers, but were actually dispensers for liquid instant coffee. For many years I was usually the only one on board with a french press, but have been seeing more and more of them in the Lido. Some only use them in the cabins obtaining the hot water by ordering hot tea with their room service breakfast. I especially like the french press when we are in coffee growing countries where I can bring back from shore local coffee. It adds to the experience.

  5. I have sailed out of Vancouver 2-3 times after flying to and from Seattle on Southwest. Each time, I used National car rental for about $60 per day. There is no high priced one way charges. I have not used other agencies, but sure they offer the same. I always spend the night before the cruise in Vancouver, and the best part is being able to turn the car in at Canada Place. They have free carts to load your luggage, elevator up, and drop off the luggage. Coming back, shuttle to rental counter, drive back. Never had issues crossing the border, maybe 30 minutes. It is a pretty drive.

  6. We only cruise on GTY cabins, and over the past 4 years or so, we get our cabins in that 7-10 day window. Under 6 days has not happen to us, but is possible. In almost all cases, on B2B, we get our cabin assignments for the 2nd cruise the same time as the first cruise. About 33% of the time we have to change cabins, which is not a big deal.

We are fortunate in that we like ships that we can feel move for sleeping, and GTY cabins are almost always forward and frequently in upper decks. Perfect for us, but certainly not for everybody.

  7. Is there a bar that has tvs with sports on them? ESPN especially? Or can you get ESPN on the tv in your cabin?

There's a college basketball game on during our cruise that I'd prefer not to miss - if at all possible. We'll be sailing in the Caribbean and on other ships I've been able to watch some games on ESPN before.

I agreed to go on this cruise thinking I could tolerate missing some of my teams games. Now that roundball season is getting closer, I'm struggling with having to miss them. Then if the ship does gets the broadcast, I'll have to find a way to sneak away from Hubby so I can watch the game.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.....other than I should just suck it up and miss the game.

Off the 35 day Rotterdam last month, they no longer show ESPN channel. Do not know why, but I am done with HAL if this does not change.

  8. I have brought back coffee from the Caribbean and Central America at least 15 times, and have never had an issue. Normal for me is to bring back 5-10 half kilo bags. I know nothing about Canada, but bringing back coffee in the USA is a non issue. FYI, I strongly prefer Costa Rica to almost all others. There is also a Panama coffee plantation that is on the Costa Rica boarder that has great coffee. I also take a french press with me so I can drink the coffee on the ship.

  9. Well last time I emailed about 6 weeks ago they processed it because they had had fax problems. However they said they wouldn't do so in future. That is all I know.

I did it yesterday, all via email, and had credit confirmed for both cruises in less than 2 hrs, start to finish.

  10. The cleaning solution they use on the gear has a strong smell that makes me sick when I breathe it in, so I bring my own. DH is not so sensitive and likes to travel light, so he rents.

FYI...to travel lite, just take your own snorkel, and rent the mask and fins. I would never put a rented snorkel in my mouth. A great experience in the caymans is to walk around to the other side of the cove where the tender boats come in and swim with the school of large tarpons that hang out next to the restaurants.

  11. Done the Seattle to Vancouver round trip 3 times. I rent a car at Seattle airport and turn it in at Canada place where they have luggage carts for free. Do the reverse after disembarking. Cost is about $65 each way. Beautiful drive, and the last two times spent the night in Vancouver. There are no one way fees between the two places. Just my experience. Forgot the price I stated does not include gas.

  12. Is Milk included as a free beverage? We have a 1 year old and will need easy access to milk through out the day.

On all cruise lines I have been on it is free, but not openly available except at breakfast, Just ask someone in the buffet area to get it for you. You can also get the small cartons and put them in refrigerators so you can get them when you need them.
