  1. We are cruising on the Epic starting April 7, 2018 and will be looking forward to others on this log in

I just booked this cruise this morning. We needed transportation to Barcelona for the last Med cruise of the Carnival Horizon and the Transatlantic back to NYC. 4/29 to 5/23). It wasn't that much more than what airfare would have cost us and this way we won't be jetlagged when we arrive in Barcelona. We'll have one week in Barcelona to sightsee before we board the Horizon on April 29. We've already crossed off some of our bucket list items in Barcelona about 4-5 years ago so I'm hoping we can also do some day trips from Barcelona into surrounding towns.

  2. My preference would always be to grab a shuttle immediately upon arriving at LAX (They are really cheap--$17 per person) to a nice hotel in San Pedro--perhaps the Crowne Plaza...and spending the night there...

Where do you get this shuttle from LAX to San Pedro and what is it called?

  3. I have been racking my brain for many years to remember the name of the ship we sailed on for our first cruise. It was around 1991 or 1992. We sailed out of Long Beach. This was a special charter sailing for our church at the time. We went to Puerta Vallarta, Matazlan, and Cabo San Lucas.

Our daughters were 19 and 20 and we were all in a tiny cabin with a tinier bathroom. They had major problems with the air conditioning on this cruise and we were hot and sweaty the entire time. However, I remember how good the food was.

Our church frowned on gambling so the casino was closed the entire time. I'm guessing we had to pay more for our fares to make up for the loss of that revenue.

  4. Our group is four adults and we will be there in May, 2016 from the Carnival Breeze.

Some of us love to snorkel (have our own gear).

    Hammocks would be a must!

Prefer lounger availability in a shaded area.

No entry fee/low entry fee would be nice.

None of us drink much so an all-inclusive would be a waste of money.

    Water toys not needed.

Peaceful and quiet would be a big plus.

    A pool would be nice.

  5. Why would your flex not tell you steps ? If you have a smart phone it all should sync if you installed the app for it.I use myfitnesspal every day for years and they both sync together right on my phone and if I tap my fitbit it blinks and can sort of guess how many steps I have based on how many lights light up

Good to know that the fitbit will sync to mfp on my smart phone (I just installed on my phone the other day). However, I wasn't planning on leaving my phone on in Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, and St. Maartens because of the high roaming charges.

I'm hoping T-Mobile will let me use my phone with no additional charges in Puerto Rico and in St. Thomas. Does anybody know for sure?

    Thanks for all the help!

  6. Keeping active is the key ... walking everywhere, the stairs, swimming ...

I wasn't on any particular diet, and I made pretty good choices most of the time, but did indulge in moderation, and somehow managed to lose 5lbs on a 4 day cruise. Having a porthole cabin all the way forward helped considerably.

I have similar issues with my 17 yo son, although "porky" probably wouldn't be a word I would use ...lol. But he uses the pedometer on his phone, and an app to log his calories and track his progress. He has been incredibly successful. Does your son have a Fitbit or some other tool that puts him in control and help him reach his goals? I logged over 20,000 steps in one day just walking around, exploring the ship!

I am considering taking my fitbit with me next week on our cruise but my question is, what did you do to sync it? My fitbit flex doesn't tell me how many steps I walk. I have to sync it to my computer and then I can see what my progress was. I also sync mine with myfitnesspal.com but I'm not sure how I'd do it away from my home computer. When I come into my computer room, there is a little thingie in my computer that the fitbit syncs with.

I considered bringing my laptop computer for this reason but I found out I couldn't sync it if it wasn't on and I'm a little leary of leaving my laptop in my cabin when we're out and about.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  7. We met a couple on Princess last year who had sold their home and signed a one year contract with Princess. Their cost for one year in an inside cabin was $29,000 for the both of them. I do not know how gratuities were handled or if they got daily room cleaning. From our conversation with them we gathered that long term arrangements like that are handled through a contractual agreement.

I would get so bored with the food if I spent one year on a ship. We took 10 cruises in 2011 on Carnival and I'd almost rather go to the Lido for dinner much of the time than to eat the "same ole, same ole" in the MDR. We'll be on a 15 day Carnival cruise to hawaii later this month and I'm not looking forward to the meals in the MDR. I know--I'm spoiled.

Yes, we could go on different ships and experience different cuisines but it's hard to beat Carnival's prices and we also enjoy the benefits of being platinum.

  8. To be honest, we almost didn't walk the walls in Dubrovnik because it was getting warm and we felt like we had seen a lot. What a HUGE mistake that would have been!

Walking the walls was one of our all time favorite things we did during our 12-night cruise. The views are AMAZING!

I almost booked a walking tour through Viator, but decided I didn't want to be bound to a set time, so we did it on our own.

We bought tickets (you can use your credit card - there is a separate line for cash). I believe they were 70 Kuna each (around $12.50). We left the stroller at the bottom and our little guy walked with us. He did awesome!

If you stop frequently to take pictures like we did, you can probably walk them all in around 2 - 2.5 hours. There are various exit points along the wall where you can enter into the neighborhoods below, if you've had enough.

We walked for about 90 minutes, past the marina, before ending. Our little boy was getting a bit worn out, so we decided that was enough...

The views are breathtaking - don't go to Dubrovnik and skip this!!

Make sure you take plenty of bottled water! There are a couple of spots along the top of the wall to buy water or have an ice cream break, but they'll be at a premium. We stopped at one of the small grocery stores below for water and snacks before walking up...

To me, I didn't think it was worth paying for an excursion in Dubrovnik. It's so easy to do on your own! It's a small place so you can't really get lost, and part of the fun is just wandering...

After the walls, we boarded the bus back to the ship. The line was huge, but moved very quickly since there were several coaches coming and going constantly. Our little guy was fast asleep, and we headed back to the ship to get freshened up for dinner in the MDR!

    It was a wonderful day!

We were in Dubronik in the Fall of 2011 and they wouldn't let us pay for our wall tickets by credit card. So my husband had to hustle over to the nearest atm and get local money and then of course we had to spend what was left so we weren't left with money we couldn't use for the rest of the trip. Having said that though, the walk on the wall was wonderful except--we somehow started walking it the wrong direction which caused us several inconvenient moments, lol.

  9. When are the Elegant Nights on the Conquest? I am trying to figure out what night to book the Point. It's going to be a surprise for my DH as we are celebrating our 30th anniversary (4 months early!) on this cruise. Thanks.

And did I say we only have 6 more weeks! Woohoo!:D

Nancy, I'm almost positive that Monday night will be the first formal night. I just did a search of this thread for formal nights and most people thought Thursday night would be the second one (a few thought Friday night). Hope this helps.

  10. january- cool enough to enjoy and warm enough to enjoy

february- superbowl weekend is a great time to cruise.

March- cruise in like a lion. Cruise out like a lamb.

April- my anniversary month so also very good.- also weather is awesome. (dont forget spring break)

may- kids not out of school but the prices are usually very high.

June- do you like kids? If so- this is the month for you.

July- usually no hurricanes (yet) but prices are high, very hot on lido deck and lots of kids.

    August- buy insurance

september- plan on using your insurance because there is a good chance you will be somehow affected by a hurricane.

October- beginning is sketchy but the end of the month is awesome. Weather just starting to cool in florida and the water is usually like glass.

November- this is my favorite month to cruise. The weather is just right, the prices are manageable, if you like kids you can cruise during the thanksgiving break. If not, go the week before.

December- could be hot or cold. This month is a tricky one for weather. But the ships are usually decorated for the holidays so that is an added bonus.

That being said- i will cruise any month i can get myself on a ship.

best answer! There's something for everybody in each of the 12 months
