  1. Hi - I'm going on a Northern Lights cruise in just a few weeks' time (yippee!). I'm ready to pack loads of warm clothing for venturing off the ship in the snowy north of Norway, but can anyone who has done this cruise at this time of year (March) tell me what the temperature is like on board in the public areas? I'm presuming it's kept pretty warm or we'd all be wearing woolly jumpers on formal nights instead of dresses, but I'm not sure and I don't want to take loads of the wrong weight clothing.

Also, when you've been off the ship in the snow and you come back on board, eg after an excursion or just a walk on shore (or even out on deck) are there areas where you can take off wet boots and coats so that the ship's rooms and corridors are kept clear?

    Many thanks for any advice

  2. Can anyone tell me how the Cunard shuttle bus works please...I will want to go into NY whilst in port and would prefer the easiest option available thank you.

We have just returned from a TA B2B Southampton to NY. We did the bus to Macy's option for our NY day so we could explore the area on foot as we pleased. The trip is offered as a tour that you can book once on board (it wasn't advertised on voyage personalised before we left) and it costs $49 each person. It might seem quite expensive for what is essentially a shuttle bus, but we wanted to ensure that we would get back to the ship in plenty of time. We set off from the port at around 7.30am and it picked us up at Macy's for the return trip at 2.30pm. Jo.

  3. Hi - I just wanted to say thank you very much for your interesting and very informative blog. I think you will be leaving the ship in Southampton just as we will be boarding for our TA round trip in just under two weeks' time. We are really excited now and are better informed about what to expect from reading about your experiences and looking at your photos.

    Thanks again - Jo :D

  4. Well I'm really confused now! I'm booked on a transatlantic and return crossing in May (just a few weeks' time yipee) and on the itinerary for the NY to Southampton crossing, one of the nights is listed as a Royal Cunard Ball. I wasn't sure what the dress code for this was, so I emailed Cunard and this was their reply:

    Thank you for your email.

Please see the description for the Royal Cunard Ball, this also falls under the theme 'Black & White or Cunard Ball'

    Theme Description:

A Cunard tradition and the first Royal Event of the voyage. Includes the classic “Officers Gavotte” dance.

    Attire Suggestions:

Formal Wear - Gentlemen - Tuxedo, Ladies - Evening Gown. Appropriate black and white gowns if you wish and accessories but not compulsory to be black & white.

I hope this information has now helped answer your enquiry.

So I have planned for two black and white nights (one on the way there and one on the way back) and have bought a second black and white gown. Looking at the list on this thread, it says that the theme will be red and/or gold!

Now I know it won't matter if I wear black and white, but I quite like the idea of red/gold - so I wish I'd waited :(

  5. Thanks for your responses. I decided to email Cunard directly and ask for their guidance on what to wear for a Royal Cunard Ball and this was their reply:

I'm looking forward to seeing the Officers Gavotte dance - has anyone seen this?

  6. On our transatlantic crossing on QM2 from New York to Southampton (17th to 24th May 2018), one of the formal nights is shown as a: 'Royal Cunard Ball'.

I'm clear on Roaring Twenties, Black and White and standard formal nights, but I'm not sure what's different on a Royal Cunard Ball from a normal formal night. Is it just a bit more OTT?

The Ball takes place on the day after the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, so maybe it's related to that?

Any help or guidance gratefully received - thanks a lot

    Jo
