  1. The BVI is world renowned for sailing. Typically there is always wind and the waters are relatively calm because of all the islands, and the swimming/snorkeling is great. Do a small group charter off the ship, you won't regret it.

    My wife and I with another couple did it twice for 10 days, bare boating with a Cal39 in 1987 and again in 1994 with a Whitby 42 and there isn't a better sailing ground in the Caribbean than the BVI. No other people to contend with, anchoring in the lee of any island, going overboard for a swim or snorkel, etc. All that before the cruise ship crowd discovered the islands since there were no docks in Roadtown. But it takes an experienced sailor to handle the boats and our women who have to cook at least three meals day. (grin). Also next bay over at Jost van Dyke was/is Foxy's, wildly popular with sailors. what happened, is foxy still alive, my business card is still stapled at the ceiling there.

  2. We are booked on the Gem out of NYC 29th of March. My wife is taking care of her dying sister but urges me to take the cruise. Will there be any problems if only I show up upon boarding?

    We also prepaid gratuities, but with only me on board should there be an adjustment?

  3. >>>You can also consider trying the German approach to sharing a bed: double bed, but each person has his/her own single comforter (duvet). No top sheet<<<

    Being German, this is how I share our king size bed at home, that way my better half is not bothered by my nightly antics...

    We too a 9 day from NYC on the Gem two years ago, we had an inside and got the beds separated, but a Balcony has a different configuration....sooo, I am not the slightest disturbed about that, though of the 17 cruises we have taken there seemed to always be a question about bedding and I wondered if I missed it somehow, so no problem, thanks cverybody...

  4. My wife sleeps very quietly, hardly turns and I am a restless sleeper only covered from under my arms to my knees ending up with the covers bunched up.

    We are on the Gem end of March in a balcony and have all our docking documents printed but were never given the choice anywhere to state that we wanted separate beds because in a queen with one cover sleeping will be a disaster. Asking the cabin attendant seems late and it even looks as if there is no room to separate the beds...Any insight?

  5. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a relaxing beach day. Be sure to go to the Soggy Dollar Bar.

    This will be our first time in the BVI via cruise ship, though my wife and I along with another couple bare boated twice there with sailboats for ten days each.

    On Jost Van Dyke Foxy's was the popular bar but now it seems to be the Soggy Dollar, so named because while we were anchored fairly close to shore, we tucked some dollar bills into our bathing suits and swam ashore, the dollars got pretty soggy with that. Nowadays we get those golden dollars, much better.

  6. We are on the Ruby Princess leaving this week and will be in Honolulu on the 29th from morning until 11PM. We are taking a North Shore tour that ends early afternoon at the ship. I don't know how far the dock is from downtown or what to do in the evening. Any suggestions?

  7. We just got off the Ruby last Thursday after a b2b Hawaii and Mexico. On the second leg we reached Platinum level, and I was very impressed with how immediate the status change was.

    The happy hour in Skywalker's was a nice venue. The $5 drink menu had good choices. The appetizers were fine, but nothing outstanding. I do like RCCL's hot foods they add to the offerings. The one night I was definitely not impressed with the Ruby's was when they put out a HUGE loaf of steak tartar. The raw meat sitting there for several hours looked pretty yucky.

    =============================================

    We are platinum and will be on the ruby on the 24th, but have never heard about this happy hour thing, where is it publicized? Is it a daily event?

  8. We booked our Hawaii Ruby cruise leaving in 16 days with an inside cabin open to an upgrade.

    But we booked with an online travel agency and our gratuities were pre paid.

    Would we or our travel agent get an upsell email and would we lose our free gratuities?
