  1. We leave on March 30 doing the same itinerary. Have been on several other Princess ships but not the Royal. It has fewer pools than others, were the pools extremely crowded on sea days?

Can’t wait to get back on a Princess ship, it has been too long. Sounds like you had a good time.

I wouldn't say they were "extremely" crowded but there were always people in them. Didn't prevent me from getting in and cooking off

  2. We leave for our 10-Southern Caribbean on the Royal next week. Do you remember any of the movies showing on MUTS? We love the Sanctuary, did you use it? And if so, was it difficult to get a spot?

    Thanks

Blade Runner, Only the Brave, The Darkest Hour, Ragnar Rock, Spider-Man, The Shape of Water, among others... they were all available on the tv the day after they were a MUTS.

  3. I'm always hesitant to get involved in a tipping thread, and as others have said, it is totally up to you, but know that the crew that receive the DSC (daily service charge, I refuse to call it a gratuity or tip, since it's not), receive a base salary of about $5 US/day, and the remainder of their "salary" comes from the DSC. The use of a "auto charged" DSC allows the cruise line to advertise a low base fare, while covering the wages of much of the crew with the DSC, and it also creates a "carrot and stick" team building atmosphere within the crew. If you reduce or remove your DSC, not only does your cabin steward and wait staff suffer, but the reduction in DSC is apportioned across the entire pool of crew who receive the DSC as wage. The cruise line hopes that this will generate peer pressure within the crew to force poor performers to adjust their service level. There is a minimum wage for seafarers, and the cruise line does not have to step in and make good any shortage of wage for the DSC pool crew until the wages drop below the minimum of $645/month.

It is an unfortunate condition of the cruise industry that they do things this way, but most have learned to consider the DSC a fixed part of the cost of a cruise. Having said that, and I know that the UK has a totally different tip culture than the US, if you leave the DSC in place, no further gratuity is expected.

Love this explanation of the way gratuities are used! We always pre-pay our gratuity and leave extra for our MDR wait staff and cabin steward (if deserved).

  4. I am looking to book a cruise to Alaska in 2019. For anyone who has been on an Alaskan cruise, is it worth paying the extra money to have a balcony as opposed to having an ocean view. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Thank you :):):)clear.png?emoji-smile-1742

Yes yes and yes! My husband and I spent so much time on our balcony on our cruise to Alaska and enjoyed it so much early in the mornings and leaving ports. We had binoculars and big lenses for the camera- so much to see... we'll never cruise without a balcony again

  5. The people who will shove their large group into an overcrowded elevator, so that everyone is pressed up against each other, are the same people who will absolutely refuse to step off the elevator at the next floor to let the people in the back get off.

Twice this week on Escape, I've had to shove past someone who refused to let me off an elevator (both times women, for what it's worth). One of them was saying "just get off, just get off", while blocking the doorway. Maybe they think they're smaller than they are? Maybe they think I'm smaller than I am? I have no idea. Both times I've had to physically push past and through them. Frankly, my days of being in a mosh pit are well behind me, but if you're going to block an exit, I'm going to move you.

(Also, it's flu season, and if you think it's a good idea to force people into direct physical contact with an elevator full of strangers, you're a damned moron.)

If you're a person who won't move to let the people in the back of the elevator get off, will you please explain your reasoning so me?

I would never stand for this... I'm the person who will educate all the rude people [emoji23][emoji23]

  6. We are visiting late May on Inside passage round trip.

I understood we need layers as it can be freezing one minute, and hot the next if the sun comes out no wind.

I have layers including tshirt at the base then jumper, jacket etc, but what about the lower half?

Will I be too cold in jeans?

We from Australia, hot climate so I dont have too many warm pants and with luggage restrictions dont want to take TOO much.

Will I be too hot with thermal under garment under my jeans,.,,,I am not a "cold frog" and dont want to be sweating my way thru my trip. Should I invest in some woolen pants?

    Thanks!

We did inside passage and while it was cold, I never felt the need for anything else under my jeans, with the exception of Movies Under The Stars one night, and I just wore leggings under my jeans.

  7. Seriously though, Rose had PLENTY of room for Jack on that door. All she had to do was slide over, but nooooo

Hahaha! Didn't you see the Mythbusters episode where they tested that theory and it FAILED! Jack could not have shared the door with Rose. I was shocked but they tested it a zillion different ways. [emoji23][emoji23]

  8. DH and I have been taking cruises since 1994 and have watched the dress codes lessen as society craved less formal options. I understand that people who have to fly to cruise ports have to pay for luggage or extra luggage and more formal clothes take up a lot of luggage space. However, after 44 cruises and 31 on Carnival, the dress code for elegant nights is pretty straightforward, but passengers still wear baseball caps and jeans with holes in them, women wearing short shorts, let alone t-shirts with offensive sayings on them. They are still allowed in the MDR on elegant nights. Is that what people really wear to restaurants that cater to elegant dining? Why even have a dress code if it is continually ignored? I just don't get it.

I agree! If people aren't interested in adhering to the dress code, then they need to eat at the buffet. Dressing nicely at dinner is respectful of the elegant setting and superb food and service. I'm noticing this more and more at nice restaurants around town, also. People wearing pajamas to Walmart and on airplanes is migrating into every inappropriate area of life. Yuck!

  9. I'm going to take my chances. First Alaskan cruise. :D

Of course- ours was too, which is why we did the excursion.... but it was thrilling to have the Orcas give us such an entertaining show! Now, if they offered a bear excursion, I'd pay double for that hahaha.... didn't get to see any bears on our trip :(

  10. Hello!

I recently tried to book with Jayleen and she is full for when I'll be there. She recommended her uncle to me and his company is called Alaska Humpback Adventures. I was wondering if anyone had experience with him and if you would book through him. He is the same price as Jayleen. He also states he was one of the first captains with Harv and Marv.

    Any recommendations would be great!

Honestly, I would never waste money to go whale watching in Alaska again... our excursion wasn't very exciting, but on two separate occasions there were large pods of Orcas jumping and playing right next to the ship on sea days. INCREDIBLE.
