  1. I don't touch alcohol and am diabetic. I found my best solution was to take sachets of Crystal Lite, a thermal drinking container, ask the room steward for a bucket of ice in the morning & evening & mix them using the faucet water in our cabin. In the Lido & MDR restaurants I would just drink the excellent water that is on board. Occasionally, I would cheat and have a free lemonade, OJ or Passion fruit juice in the Lido restaurant.

  2. Travelled 2 weeks across the Atlantic in April on the Koningsdam & have booked to travel back next month. Initially, I was concerned about what to expect in the main theater but I enjoyed most of the shows. I thought the Koningsdam band & singers were very versatile and the guest artistes were varied and talented. One was not my cup of tea but overall they gave pleasurable performances.

The B.B. Kings group was talented and seemed to get a lot of people up dancing. The duel piano players were good and attracted a good crowd most nights, as did the Lincoln Center musicians during the day & early evening. We enjoyed the single classical pianist when we stopped in for pre-dinner entertainment.

The rest of the time we attended well informed lectures, played trivia games, watched the outside movie on the Lido deck and watched first rate recent movies on our cabin TV. My wife went to the cooking demonstrations when I attended the computer classes (both of which were always full). I tried my hand in the casino where $100 lasted me about 30 minutes - I never tried again. This coming trip I intend to learn how to play Bridge.

Not part of the original question, but we thought the food choices were outstanding. Loved the MDR and Lido buffet.

All in all we had a relaxing & entertaining time.

  3. Cruised Transatlantic on Koningsdam last Spring, enjoyed it so much we have book to return from Rome next month. From FLL to Rome, there were 38 kids on board - so few, they were a novelty. Even though the ship was close to full, it did not seem crowded at all - there always seemed to be plenty of space. As for bottled water, the water from the faucet is far better - crystal clear, good tasting & safe to drink. Food on board (especially MDR) was excellent. Thought HAL Koningsdam was a fine ship.
