  1. I just don't think they are going to get a lot bad press about this; it has been a month already and nothing; not even a single review on cruise critic.

I've been trying to post a review for over a week without success; cruise critic has told me there must be a "glitch." I just don't know if I want to keep trying.

  2. Of course, when Oceania had a PR nightmare a number of years back and it went viral on CC Del Rio jumped in with flowing mea culpas; that is sort of what I was wishing for this time.

I was sort of wishing that, too. We, also, cancelled our upcoming, and paid for, Silversea cruise, but have not yet looked at another. We're a bit fascinated at the language attached to the use of the credit. While it may be standard in these cases to require the user to give up all future legal rights, it just amazed (and amused) us at how far this one goes.

  3. Is this the case? I thought I had read that the fuel was unexpectedly depleted because of a medical emergency and the near to steam back to an area served by the US Coast Guard. Or was this a different expedition cruise?

As Marc points out, the stories we were told by Silversea were often pretty contradictory. Word from locals in Nome, however, was that there was not sufficient fuel in the harbor to fuel the ship, though there was plenty of fuel for our voyage. The last minute changed itinerary was probably a way to get fuel needed for the next trip.

  4. Marc,

We just did, today, cancel a booked and paid for cruise. We disagree that Silversea met its legal obligation. They began the cruise having received insufficient fuel in Nome, so either they didn't order enough (which is negligence) or they didn't receive enough (which is legally actionable on their part). There are other areas that might involve legal exposure, which is probably why they are very carefully responding with vetted form letters and no personal contact.

  5. Expedition Staff was fantastic. Hotel department fantastic.

We've traveled with four different expedition lines, multiple times. While there were some great people on this expedition team--Peter, Robin, and Susan spring directly to mind--overall the team was among the least qualified we've had. Agreed, however, that the hotel department was utterly marvelous.

  6. The reason they ran low on fuel was not that not enough fuel was loaded initially, but rather that they had to do all this sailing back and forth which used up the fuel.

Do you know this for a certainty? Silversea changed the itinerary about four days before departure to allow two stops in Pevek for fuel. Pevek was iced in, possible even when the change was made. We were told (I was on this nightmare of a cruise) there was plenty of fuel for our cruise, so we all suspected that Silversea spent four days of our cruise refueling for the next cruise--was that your cruise? But we don't know for sure.
