No, it's not.  The guy's wife has cancer!  That is hardly the same as a "poor choice" or someone who decided to change their plans for no reason.  How much would it hurt NCL's millions in profits to refund a few grand? Or at least switch his cruise?

What disease she has is totally irrelevant.  The poor choice was his personal choice to assume the risk of loss by not getting insurance.  If you think the appeal to pity is sufficient for him to get his money back then by all means write a check.

  2. Having just carry on luggage has nothing to do with when your cabin us ready.  CAN you get to your room before the announcement, yes you CAN.  The doors are not locked between the common areas and the cabin hallways.  SHOULD you go there before the announcements are made, thus getting in the way of the people working hard to get he cabins ready for everyone?  I'll let each person rationalize why it is OK for them to do so and not everyone else.

I wouldn't know since I only drink the ship's water, since it's healthier and better prepared. Bottled water is one of the biggest scams in the world. I also bring my Yeti to refill and keep ice water with me nearly all the time.

As my S/O says, pretty soon someone will sell and market bagged air convincing the more giullible among us that it is far healthier than "regular air" and you have to have it in order to survive.  Just ask this guy, he will explain it to you.

OP, take to social media. Hit them at Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, etc; try to get your story viral. Companies to not like negative social media attention and may listen more.

Thuggery and strong arming a company to get something that you do not deserve.  Yeah that's the way of the generation of "All about me", "screw personal responsibility", "someone else needs to make my poor choices go away".  I hope you are not raising any kids that way.

I used to deal with this a lot working in retail- it doesn't matter if the customer is wrong. If you deny them certain things, they will never shop there again, and they will try to tell their friends and family never to shop there again. Over their lifetime, that is going to be a significant amount in comparison to the small amount sacrificed to give them their way.

In the OP's situation, they will never take another NCL cruise again. How many thousands of dollars will that cost NCL instead of a refund? AND NCL may be able to resell the cabin to someone else.

OP, take to social media. Hit them at Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, etc; try to get your story viral. Companies to not like negative social media attention and may listen more.

Probably very few.  On the oterh nad they keep passengers who know that a pity fee will not be added to their future cruises.

I just want to put it out there to all of the posts saying that in order to run a business you have to act like heartless, add the noun. NCL could have, should have allowed us credit for at least part of the cost. They offered nothing after repeated attempts. I will bet that our room is booked on that cruise. Anyone want to take me up on it? There is enough Cruise Critic people to let us all know whether this is the case.  For those of you saying we should have bought the insurance, I say Delta, full refund, Barcelo Hotels full refund, Marriott Hotels full refund and Royal Caribbean we had pay like $200 and that cruise was a week later than NCL. Maybe NCL should join the rest of the hospitality industry and do away with their archaic customer service. It's everyones choice who to do business with and I know where my loyalties will lie in the future.

And there we go.  When you have no valid point to support you side of a debate stoop to pity, emotion, and ad hominem attacks.  NCL COULD HAVE let everyone on teh cruise sial for free, they COULD HAVE dropped teh port fees and taxes for everyone, they  COULD HAVE given every free unlimited specialty dining.  They also COULD HAVE goen by teh contarct that both parties agreed to and that the passenger agreed to by choosing not to get insurance.

the most important thing here is how do you want to dress?  Do what you want to do, cause you will see it all.  we just came back from 15 day carribean, every day was shorts or swim suits, even to shows and dinner, not once did i wear pants.  the ncl slogan fits here perfectly to your question, freestyle do what you want to do, if you want to dress down do it, dress up do it

LOL the comments that could be made.

I have received repeated emails regarding Norwegian Cruise Line's  special for a 7 day cruise from New Orleans for $299.  When I click on the ad, I'm taken to Norwegian's site offering numerous cruises and specials.  But lo and behold, NO $299 specials!

So I called Norwegian to ask when the cruise sails and how to book it.  The rep told me repeatedly that he could not find a cruise at that price.   And I replied that neither could I find it but  that I would like to book it at the advertised price.  The rep finally said that it was probably a "marketing error".   There is no doubt that it was an error but more comonly defined as bait and switch which is actually illegal.

Let's see how long it takes to correct their error or offer me the cruise at the advertised $299.

Or maybe it was an error by the reader in understanding the offer.  Maybe not, but until you post the exact content of the email we will never know.

Don’t you think the world could use a little more compassion. One again profits and the almighty dollar trumps empathy, dignity and common sense.

And personal responsibility trumps all of that.  Sad as it is, the OP made a choice out of his own free will to not buy insurance and accept the risk of something happening that would cause a cancellation.   Now something has happened and he wants NCL to assume the risk from his personal choice he freely made.

It's not a case of blaming NCL or their policies. All cruise lines have the same policies, as do airllines. It's not about policies, or having insurance or not. It's about compassion, and we all know NCL has none.

Playing the pity and guilt card huh?  Please outline for all of us the items on your guilt trip list that qualify for excusing the personal responsibility to buy insurance.

That is the deal. we cancelled as soon as found out...months away from the actual cruise. we didn't ask for a refund just a credit towards a future cruise. NCL took our money, more than likely will resell our balcony mid ship room and take the gain of both. No we did not take insurance.

It does not matter how fast you reported it once you are past final payment and the 100% cancellation penalty.  Also future credit IS cancelling yoru cruise and (maybe) booking another one.  Expensive lesson learned.

Assume OP cancels the cabin with 100% penalty and NCL re-sells the cabin at a higher price, is that fair?  If you are inside final payment and have no insurance, then cancel the day before departure or no-show ... don’t give NCL the opportunity to make more money off your crisis.

    Poor assumption.

I’m saying that IN THIS CASE, the right thing to do is grant a refund. I buy insurance too. All other carriers refunded their reservations.

This case is no different than hundreds, if not thousands of others where someone books a cruise and personally made the choice to not get insurance, then later has to cancel and suffer a loss.  No difference at all.  The insurance dos not say "if you have to cancel and you can play the pity card strong enough we will just go ahead and give you your money back even though you chose not to get insurance".
