FAIRBANKS, Alaska The investigation is still ongoing for the fire at Princess Riverside Lodge in Fairbanks that led to the evacuation of close to 600 people.

University Fire Department Fire Marshal, Kyle Green, said they have been working with the state fire marshal's office, as well as witnesses in the kitchen, to piece together what might have caused the fire.

Princess Cruises said in a statement, "At approximately 8:30 p.m. local time on June 13, a fire broke out in the kitchen of the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge. The local fire department responded and extinguished the fire. All hotel employees and guests were safely accounted for, and the facilities were deemed safe by local officials. Guests will resume their stays beginning June 17. Restoration for some kitchen facilities remains underway, so special menu offerings are available to accommodate most dining needs until typical operations in food and beverage venues resume."

University Fire Department Fire Marshal, Kyle Green, said they have been working with the state fire marshal's office, as well as witnesses in the kitchen, to piece together what might have caused the fire.

"Ultimately we're narrowing it down to some type of cooking related fire, we're not still quite sure exactly what it was that caught fire, it might be grease, it might be cooking material, so we're still in the process of analyzing all this evidence that we've collected and coming to a determination."

  3. We will be disembarking at Vancouver on July 6, but our flight home doesn't leave until 10:30 pm. Since we figured we could make some use of our spare time we purchased the "Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour with Airport Transfer" in Vancouver. It sounds pretty straightforward, I assume they collect the luggage at the ship and it waits for us at the airport while we hop on and off some bus that comes around a pre-determined route.

I'm hoping we can spend some time seeing a few places without being rushed, since I assume again that the busses come regularly. Does anyone have any experience with this particular excursion? Are my assumptions accurate?

  4. So we will be travelling to Fairbanks on Saturday night for the start of the land portion of our Cruisetour. Fairbanks, to Denali Lodge, McKinley Lodge, then to Whittier to meet the ship the following Saturday. Many excursions have been booked. I'm trying to get a feel for how much cash I should take along. I know I need some tipping money, and cash for snacks/drinks, trinkets, etc. I assume credit cards are accepted for meals at the lodges. I shouldn't need too much once onboard ship, aside from the excursions. Anybody have any guidelines? I always bring too much lol.

  5. My Ocean Ready app has been fluctuating between fully green and wanting travel docs (even though they still show that they are in there). I've quit worrying about it. Earlier today it was saying I needed travel docs, and just now I checked and I'm all green again.

I did have a bit of trouble ordering the accessories for our medallions though. Trying to get a bracelet for my wife and a sport band for myself, it was very difficult to get the app to offer the choices for both people. It would offer up the choices for one, and when you went to next profile it just showed the water bottle and notebook. Eventually I played with it enough that it worked, and I was able to complete the purchase. That was several days ago, and they haven't charged my credit card yet which seems odd, but maybe it doesn't post until it ships or something.

For what it's worth, I had the same issue when trying to use the online website. After calling the help number (those people are terrific) I was told that the online website would never work, it has issues, and you MUST use the app to order the medallions and order accessories. Also, they are well aware of the flakey app issues, with the travel docs disappearing. I believe they are working on an update to fix it (but it hasn't rolled out as of yet).

    • Thanks 1
  6. And just like that, I checked the app again and everything is back to normal. I am all green checkmarks Ocean Ready. The passport info is there, it's correct, I can edit it if I want, all is well.

Oh and it still says I may need a visa for entry, but I stand by my claim that they tell everyone that. In your case, you really do!

  7. Just now, redlac said:

As mentioned earlier, I was green light "Ocean Ready" up until yesterday, and the the visa IS required to go ashore in Russia.

No hurry, no worry... just a curiousity.   All will be fine.

I get what you are saying, but mine has the same thing on it. I was also green light "Ocean Ready" yesterday. It's frustrating when things just don't work the way they are supposed to. For all I know it will be back to Ocean Ready tomorrow. :classic_rolleyes:

  8. So, I'm also having issues with Ocean Ready. I had everything done, really no problem at all, and the next day the travel documents disappeared. So I entered them again, and it looked good, but a couple hours later it said I wasn't Ocean Ready anymore, and the travel docs needed to be added. When I went to add them AGAIN, I could see that they were still there. The info was correct and there was the picture of the passports. Ditto for the Ocean website, it said we needed travel docs, but when you looked the passport info was there, with picture. I could click on the edit button and click save, but when it came back it still said additional docs were needed. And the "DONE" button was grayed out.

I believe the thing about "you may need a visa" is a standard thing that is always there, it's just informational. My trip is Alaska/Canada. No visa required from USA.

Is this just a stupid glitch that I shouldn't worry about? Does it just fix itself on its own? This thing seems to be half-baked.
