Wow! We just got upgraded from a GTY OV picture window to a balcony on NCL Jewel sailing 6/24/24 to Alaska! I really was not expecting it. Balcony rooms have been sold out for awhile now, and weren’t even available when we originally booked. I bid $260/pp, but to outright upgrade would have been about $3500. I’m happy!

    Amayzin!

  2. Now for a much more confusing question 😂. If I use 10k points to upgrade within the meta then choose to pay cash to upgrade to a higher meta, would I pay the difference from what I already paid, or the difference from the value of the room when I upgraded using points? Hopefully this was clear enough 👌

🍾🥳 Just got the upgrade confirmation for our 12 day cruise on the Epic (starting in Trieste) on Friday. I had booked an inside cabin super cheap in April with 200€ off from a promo. Now we are in an aft balcony on deck 13 for 150€ more per person. Never been in an aft balcony before, I hope we‘ll love it.

When you bid was it for a balcony in general or specifically an aft balcony?

Ouch.  Maybe try an upgrade bid to family balcony.  On a site I look at there are currently 99 B4 rooms.

Yeah that’s kind of what I’m banking on now. The chance of getting stuck in a tiny inside cabin with a 4 year old and an infant is pretty nerve racking, but I guess it’s all part of the fun😂

IThis suggestion doesn’t save you $$ but may give you a better cabin.  Do the paid upgrade to a OA cabin, then use your points to upgrade to a balcony.  Check yo make sure both cabins are available.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ve considered this. The probably is there’s only family ocean views available which are more expensive than a guaranteed balcony. Which would be crazy for us because we will be put into a family stateroom no matter what since there is 4 of us.

  6. I have 30k points. Have a guaranteed inside room. I tried to do a single meta upgrade to an oceanview but there are no guaranteed oceanviews available. We are a family of 4 and cannot settle for an inside cabin, I’m tempted to pay outright to upgrade but it’s very expensive. Any suggestions? As I mentioned the cruise is in 45 days and don’t have much time to get points from a second card.

Yes.  And unlike some airline programs, they do not charge you to move your points.  We have several cards and when I’m ready to use points I move points to my main account.  Although I believe you can have an agent pull them from separate accounts, but it’s too easy to move them yourself online.

Wow thanks for the quick response. My cruise is in 45 days so it’s probably to late to get another card and apply the points towards and upgrade at this point. Maybe for next time. Thank you!

  8. Hello. I am booked in an inside cabin and have 30k points. There are no oceanview rooms available to upgrade to. Would I be able to use my points and pay a difference to upgrade to a balcony? My guess is they would tell me to pay for the upgrade and use my 30k for a statement credit.

    Yes that's correct.

You should always book the highest category like "A".   That way you have a larger pool of rooms .  In your case that is the problem.  You booked the lowest and there are no lowest to cross to

Change your booking to an IA or IB and try again

Thank you. The problem is the price of the cruise has gone up significantly since I booked. My plan is to bid on higher rooms and use my points for a statement credit if I win.

  10. Today I called to redeem 30k points to upgrade from a family inside room to a family ocean view. I booked a guaranteed inside cabin and was assigned to a family inside since I have 4 people in my cabin. When I called I was told I can’t upgrade to a family ocean view because I had booked a guaranteed inside. No guaranteed ocean views are available. Does this sound correct?

You need to do a mock booking and see how many OV are left.

If it's not allot, do it sooner.  If many, then you could wait.

On an Alaska cruise last year, the balcony cabins ended going lower than my inside I booked before using a double upgrade well in advance.

I was lucky I was able to cancel and rebook it again at a much lower price and used points for a double upgrade.

Now you probably can bid to get a balcony once you get the OV.

Great thanks for the help! It’s a reposition go cruise on the prima, doesn’t seem to be selling well at all and is dirt cheap!
