We've loved our cruises to Alaska on HAL. They are definitely the leader in knowing what they're doing in that part of the world. We are booked for the Inside Passage in June, and this will be our third time on Volendam, 6th time to Alaska. We LOVE the smaller size. There are other dining options besides the MDR and Lido Buffet, but most are additional cost. There is a complimentary Dive In burger/hot dog option on the Lido deck. One good thing about HAL is that most of the items on the MDR menu are also offered in the buffet. We prefer the dining room, though, because it's more elegant. If traditional sailing is what you desire, this is it. And hopefully they've retained the tradition of serving their wonderful pea soup while in Glacier Bay: a real treat. On our other Alaska cruises, there have been lectures about local wildlife, etc. during the cruise. I hope this is helpful information. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you decide to take this trip.

So glad you had a great time. We're booked on the Volendam June 21-28. I'm starting to get excited. We were scheduled for a Mexican Riviera cruise in December, but had to cancel because DH got COVID the week before. Heartbreaking. Because of that, I've not really gotten as enthusiastic about this cruise as that one, afraid of being disappointed again. Hoping and praying for healthy sailing in June.
I would love to see any info you have from daily activities schedules, menus, formals nights, orange night, etc. We were on Volendam several years ago, and we loved this ship, one of our favorites. TIA for anything you can share.

Thanks so much, all of you. My mouth is watering already just thinking about it!

Can anyone tell me if HAL still serves pea soup on deck while cruising Glacier Bay? This has always been a highlight for us, but it's been a few years, and we hope they still do. Thanks.

It is a yummy concoction of baked day-old bread, milk, butter, eggs, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla, and raisins, which you top with a vanilla custard. Recipe is available online.

No more classical music?!
in Holland America Line
Posted
Yes, on our cruise to Alaska last week on Volendam, there wasn't a single note of classical music. So disappointing!! We've always enjoyed that before dinner. We also booked for Eurodam next year, and the cruise consultant assured us there would be Lincoln Center on it, but apparently that was incorrect. Also, there was afternoon tea only 3 times last week, and Royal Dutch Tea was gone completely. I told my husband that probably by the next time we cruise, afternoon tea will be a thing of the past. Sad! 😥
