The shuttle from the cruise ship took us to Lyttleton city in about 5 mins.  (maps below), where we took a shuttle to christchurch (I believe it was under 2$ and 35 mins ride) to bus station in Christchurch)

Is it possible to drop off bags at the port earlier than the appointment time at San Francisco Port ?

The idea is to drop off bags at 10.30 am or so, walk around Pier 39 and checkin around 2pm. 

Trying not to pull bags all over the place...

Too early I can understand having to wait, but if you are late, I dont see how they can turn you away. Unless someone is late and turned away and misses their cruise I wouldn't worry. Worrying about wording is beyond what I can do right now. Got enough going on. 

May be they make them wait , just to teach a lesson ?  😁
