  1. Just got off the Veendam last week and you DO NOT need a ship's tour. You can easily walk on and off by yourself and it is very easy to do. We did the "Taste of Havana" tour the day we got there and I would not recommend this tour at all. Won't go into the specifics. The next day we just walked off the ship and walked around by ourselves.

The day you arrive the ship even has a special time where if you do it yourself, you can get off. You DO NOT need to do a ship's tour.

Maybe that's how it was at one time but as for now, you do not need a tour.

We are planning on the Culinary Traditions of Cuba HAL tour, is it the same one?

  2. We never received a letter because we wanted to use the perk on our 25th cruise so we called the Milestone desk and it worked that way. Our 25th was only a couple of months after our 24th.

You said that you know you can use the 25% discount on any cruise but that is incorrect. There is no discount but you will have a non-refundable OBC on your S&S card. This is based on the base fare of your own cruise and not on the total cabin price. You have to use this benefit within 24 months of the 25th cruise. The OBC will not show up on your docs until about two days before sailing.

We did not receive our Miestone card at check in but had to go to Guest Services to have the correct card issued, so you may or may not receive it at check in.

    Congratulations on achieving your Milestone.

Hi I just checked the FAQs and it looks like it is now 18 months not 24

    What is the Milestone program?

Milestone Recognition Program denotes a guest’s 25th, 50th 75th and 100th revenue cruise with Carnival. Guests will receive a special Milestone Sail & Sign card on their corresponding Milestone cruise. We want to distinguish guests on their Milestone sailing with a unique card so that we can make his/her Milestone experience extra special and memorable. After this milestone cruise, they will revert to the card that corresponds to their VIFP level. Guests will receive the full set of benefits according to their VIFP level.

In addition to a special Sail & Sign Card, the guest will be granted the opportunity to redeem a future onboard credit equivalent to 25%, 50% or 75%, corresponding to the milestone reached. A letter will be sent to the guest advising them of this earned benefit that they could redeem for any sailing in the next 18 months. This letter will include a redemption code and redemption instructions.

  4. So, it appears that they're handled differently.

If you use a card to pay the balance (less than the card amount), the difference remains on the card. Makes sense. Carnival isn't going to take more than the balance due, no matter what you use to pay it off.

It states that right on the e-card page on Carnival's website.

But if you apply the card to your S&S and don't use it all, it does NOT go back on the card. You get a refund check.

Got a response from Carnival. Part of what was said was this...

"We apologize for the miscommunication but they should have advised you that the balance left would not go back on the gift card and that you would receive it via mail."

So, lesson learned. Use the large cards to pay balance on cruise; use smaller denominations to apply to S&S account. Not that getting the refund check was a big deal. I just expected it to go back on the card. At least now I don't have to keep up with that piece of paper, right? ;)

I was curious to know what happened if you pay on your balance with your gift cards & you cancel your cruise. I called Carnival and was told the refund is going to be put on a gift card. This makes sense except I might not want a $1000 or so dollars on a Carnival gift card vs a charge card that I can use for other items. Just another thing to consider when using the cards.
