  1. Just boarded Ruby Princess

    Attending Muster Drill

Captain announced it as per the Peincess Patter

We got into Theatre and seated and instead of starting drill on time Princess delayed it by 20 minutes and just told us all to sit and relax

To chat to whoever is beside us

    Normal crappy Princess service

Officers never mingle with passengers as we might tell them how inconsiderate they are

This is a joke, right?

Also, what the heck is "normal crappy Princess service"? I've never experienced that.

I've also never understood why some think that the officers should mingle with the passengers. Is it a need to feel special? I honestly do not understand.

  2. Can you actually show me where in any fine print it actually says that there is no sharing? If I am allowed a certain amount of drinks in a given period of time and Princess does not specifically state that can not be done, anyone doing what I have just innocently asked is not "cheating the system". It was an honest question because the website was not clear to me on this and if I can be shown otherwise, so be it. Otherwise, I take offense to any suggestion that I am trying to cheat.

You are not limited to a certain number of drinks within a certain period of time. It is unlimited.

This is what it says on the pre-order form on the Princess website:

    All-Inclusive Beverage Package:

Take advantage of our All-Inclusive Beverage Package which includes

any individual beverage item, such as soda, water, cocktails, spirits, wines,

beers, coffee and tea, up to $10 (retail value). Price includes service charge

    Item # 0525 – $56.35 per person/per day*^

So I think that it is very clear that there is no sharing.

  3. We are not the types to hang out in the cocktail lounge trying to use up our minimum.

There should be a discount for longer cruises ;), as some people won't be able to drink constantly for more than a week.

    What interesting assumptions

I find the AIBP to be a good value because it includes not only wine, beer and cocktails but also specialty coffee & teas, fresh squeezed orange juice, bottled water, and soda. That hardly means that I'll be hanging out in the cocktail lounge all day or drinking alcohol constantly. Wow.

Steelers36, I do think that you have a good idea and I'm glad that you shared it with Princess. It certainly could be a better option for some.

  4. On one of our cruises that ended in San Juan, we did not disembark until after 1pm. I don't really remember the details but maybe it had to do with immigration clearing the ship.

We could have cared less because our flight wasn't until the following day, but I remember that there were a lot of very angry people who missed their flights.

  5.

I never cook bacon at home, but on a cruise, we both pretend statins are on overdrive and go for a serving or two of bacon with breakfast.

    Darcy

But I thought that everything one eats on a cruise is fat free/cholesterol free/sugar free/calorie free!

JK :D I never eat desserts or anything sweet/sugary unless I am on a cruise. That's when I allow myself to indulge a little just because I am on vacation!

  6. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this ship. You can see from my signature how many times I have sailed her, most recently in October of last year. Yes, she is a bit older but still has all of the things that I love about Princess. The crew, service and food have always been fantastic!

If you go on your cruise expecting or looking for things that are wrong, you will probably find them. If you go with an open mind and an anticipation of having a wonderful time, then I believe that you will. :)

  7. You can choose Anytime Dining and go to the MDR whenever you like for dinner.

Also, in addition to the above suggestions, on formal night you can eat in one of the specialty restaurants where the suggested dress is always smart casual.

By the way, the buffet is really nice in the evenings for dinner. They set the tables with glassware & utensils, the lights are turned down and they have waiter service for beverages.

  8. I'm not sure where you read that but it is completely untrue. The drink package is for 1 individual and it cannot be shared. However, unlike some cruise lines, if one person in a cabin purchases it, Princess does not require everyone else in the same cabin to purchase it as well.

    From the Princess website:

All-Inclusive Beverage Package Take advantage of our All-Inclusive Beverage Package which includes any individual beverage item, such as soda, water, cocktails, spirits, wines, beers, coffee and tea, up to $10 (retail value). Bottles of wine are NOT included in the package; however, when purchased in bars, dining rooms or specialty restaurants, will be available at 40% discount from the menu price. Applicable to all bottles below $100 retail. Note: This package is available for consumption at all bars, public areas and dining venues (not room service and excludes mini bar items).

Package is not currently offered on Dawn, Sea and Sun Princess or Diamond, Emerald or Golden Princess voyages departing from and returning to Australia and New Zealand.Item #0525$56.35

    per person/

    per day

  9. Our last Carnival cruise a couple of years back (as in, they made us an offer we couldn't refuse ... under $400 for 7 nights) actually validated our previous contentions ... it's just not for us.

Don't get me wrong ... they've got to be doing something right, with so many ships in the water, not to mention ownership of Holland America, Princess, Costa, Cunard, Windstar, Seabourn (72 ships at last count) ... as much as I'd like to, I just can't knock success.

Those cruise lines are owned by Carnival Corporation, not Carnival. They are all operated independently. I can only tell you from my own experience but I feel that there is a vast difference between Carnival Cruise Lines and Princess Cruise Lines.

  10. no. I think the "point" of this thread is that too many people whine about the dress code. No wonder other countries think americans are crass. We can't even agree to adhere to the dress code that is specifically stated by princess.

I personally think that those who want to drag things down to their level should either just grow up or cruise a different line.

    like!!!

  11. I am truly not nit picking.

What is the definition of formal then? In my 'world' a cocktail dress is NOT formal. A long dress is. On your definition I wore formal every formal night of my recent med cruise - I consider I did not.

So I would look at your cocktail dress and think you haven't dressed formal.

Isnt that interesting and maybe the crux of the thread - what someone considers formal, others do not. Add in racial and cultural differences and it is no wonder everyone gets in such a lather and how does a cruiseline deal with it.

I also agree that the word 'casual' is misleading and should go. Too open to interpretation. Shirts with collar and long slacks and closed shoes for men, long slacks and top/ dress for women and shoes or sandals (no denim or rubber shoes allowed?)

Well all that matters is that Princess says that a cocktail dress is formal. They are the host and therefore they dictate what is appropriate. Also, as I mentioned, this was on Carnival and their standards seemed to be a lot lower than Princess'. I felt very overdressed in a cocktail dress, believe me. There was a young couple at the table next to me on formal night and the woman was wearing a swimsuit w/cover up. The man wore a baseball cap on backwards, wife beater and jeans hanging off of his butt so that everyone could see his boxer shorts. But I guess that was ok since he had lots of bling/jewelry on as well.

So again, my point is that anyone can at least make an effort even with luggage fees & restrictions. The people that I take issue with are the ones who refuse to make any effort whatsoever. There just isn't any excuse IMHO. I consider it to be lazy, selfish and disrespectful.

  12. A cute dress isn't a formal dress though.

Ok let's nitpick. I wore fancy cocktail dresses on the 2 formal nights, not full length gowns. Is that formal enough? By the way, this was on Carnival, where pretty much anything goes even on formal nights (they were still called formal nights back then, now they are called elegant nights).

I didn't realize that I would have to be so specific. I think you missed my point entirely. The luggage restrictions and fees are just a lame excuse. I've proven that it can be done. :D

  13. Can anyone tell me that has had these dishes or seen these dishes if they come with sides or is it just the meat? You know like veg or pasta or potatoes?

    secondi

    Bistecca Toscana*

10 ounce strip steak with rosemary, garlic and a touch of our own extra-virgin olive oil

    Or

    Lombata di Vitello al Forno*

roasted veal rack with mushroom ragout, barolo glaze

Yes, there are sides available. Here is the menu:

    http://www.princess.com/downloads/pdf/Onboard_Experience/CrownGrill-2013-Sample.pdf

The sides are on the bottom of the last page and you can order as many as you like. The portions are large though, more like "sharing" portions.

  14. The average age of the passengers will depend on the length of the cruise as well as the time of year, not the cruise line. I've been on Carnival cruises where the "sidewalks" rolled up at 8pm. However, I don't understand what age would have to do with "a lively crowd and lots of fun". I took my 75 year old mother on a cruise last year and she was still going strong in the late evening when I was ready to drop :o

There has always been plenty of fun and dancing on the Princess cruises that I have been on. OP, I think that you would enjoy Princess as well. It is quieter than Carnival but that has more to do with less announcements and different types of activities than you might find on Carnival. It's more of a "laid-back" kind of fun rather than an "in-your-face" kind of fun. Hope that makes sense :D
