  1. Very interesting read. We normally cruise Royal Caribbean also. In October we were on Norwegian Spirit Honolulu to Tahiti. Totally agree with you about the ship. It looked brand new and we really liked it. Plus enjoyed the meals and entertainment.

Next month we’re on Navigator so we’ll have a comparison. Hope it’s better than your experience but Spirit will be hard to beat.

  2. The trolley is running and it is free. Route map is easily found online.

Walk to end of pier after getting off tender, go across the small parking area and there is an ABC store on the corner of the hotel.  There is a walkway in front of it to the street and that is where the trolley stops. You’ll see a “Trolley Stop” sign on the post. It goes along Ali’i Drive right along the shore to the Keauhou shopping area where it turns around and heads back.  It stops at 2 popular beaches, Magic Sands Beach and Kahalu’u Beach which is popular for snorkeling.

Directly across the street from the ABC store is another stop for it going the other direction.  It heads inland there and then along Route 11 or Queen Ka’ahumanu Hwy to the Kona Commons Shopping Center and stops by the Dairy Queen (again there is a sign and if you’re there the trolley is easily visible as it approaches) before crossing the street to stop by the Target before heading back towards the pier.

It does a continuous loop taking about 1 hour.  I have heard talk about the addition of a second trolley but don’t think that has happened.  On cruise ship days I have seen a long line for it by the ABC store. If that happens and you see it going the other less popular direction get on it and grab a seat as you can stay on it as long as you wish.

  3. We’re diamond plus and I think have attended the veterans gathering on each cruise. They vary a bit but are always fun.

The last  few weeks we we’ve been on a Norwegian B2B, first time on Norwegian in several years. Each cruise had daily veterans gatherings every sea day in a lounge and one invitation only afternoon reception with snacks and drinks. After introductions the photographer took pictures of each veteran or couple separately with the Captain. The next day the photo and a certificate was delivered to our stateroom — no charge!!  Norwegian now gives a 10% discount to veterans also.

  4. I’m thinking it is not possible to use OBC to purchase excursion before boarding, is that correct?   If not and I use credit card now for reservations if I get onboard and find out the excursion is not sold out is it possible to cancel and rebook then using OBC?

  5. Was sitting on a bench on a European Viking River Cruise talking with a friend when a woman walked up and my friend said oh, I want you to meet my friend Fiona.  I said the only Fiona I had ever known was a sorority sister my freshman year at a large midwestern university but she left after the first year.  Well, you know where this is going!  Yup, it was the same Fiona!!

  6. Sorry if this is a repeat but I don’t see a discussion about this during a quick look at the first couple pages. Pride was supposed to be in Kona today .  In looking at cruise mapper it is cruising north from Hilo and is not quite at the north end of the big island. Does anyone know the reason for the delay?

  7. We have taken just 1 Carnival cruise in the USA and that was because we wanted the itinerary.  We decided we probably wouldn't try it again.  However, last spring while in Europe we saw a Carnival cruise that was just too good to ignore -- both for itinerary and price -- so we jumped on it at the last minute.  We had been told a European Carnival cruise was much different than one in the USA, especially if it is over a week long, and we have to agree.  We really enjoyed it.  It was very port intensive though, so we were off the ship every day except one.

  8. We haven't cruised with Carnival before.  We bought a shore excursion and wish to cancel but I don't see a place to do that online.  I have the email confirming our purchase but it doesn't have information about canceling.

Do I have to call or can I somehow do it online?

    Thanks so much!
